FORT PIERCE - A 2-inch-tall toy monkey cost one deputy building official his
$88,000-a-year job Friday.
City Manager Dennis Beach fired Dan Gargas, a contracted deputy building
official, after he initiated a gag gift that involved giving outgoing
Building and Code Enforcement Director John Alcorn a toy monkey during his
going-away party at City Hall last week.
The "inappropriate gift" was meant to mock an incident in which Alcorn
admittedly called a black female code enforcement officer a monkey several
months ago. The officer later filed a complaint with the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission alleging racial discrimination.
The gift also came at a time when the EEOC is investigating four other
complaints from black code enforcement officers alleging their poor
performance evaluations were based on racial discrimination.
