SBS:
Munity in the Church of Scientology. Many of the members
of the Dutch department say they are being manipulated.
Therefore dozens of people are fleeing the church but most of them
often lost tens of thousands of euro's and their dreams.

Behind these walls in Amsterdam members of the Church of Scientology
are working on what they call personal improvement.
The Church was founded in the fifties by Ron Hubbard.
The main point of his philosophy is that every human being can
better handle personal problem through study.
Also to former member John Leemhuis the church looked like
the sollution.
John: What are the most common problems in Society? Study, find work,
how to get along with others etc. etc.
SBS: And you can learn that at Scientology?
John: Yes.
SBS: So this is what interested you?
John: Yes is was interesting to [mee en] so I went out on the Kalverstraat
(Main street in Amsterdam) to bring people in. That's what I did
for 7.5 years.
SBS: So no matter what kind of [wheather] you were standing out
there in the Kalverstraat?
John: Yes in rain and wind, whether is was Christmas time or not, or
whatever -- like when it is for instance 7 degrees below zero. I found
this knowledge so interesting... [fade out]

After no less than 15 years John stepped out out. His friends in
Scientology were forbidden to contact him. And he was left Behind with
20.000 Euro of debts, because Scientology is not that cheap.
But Celebrities of course do have enough money. Tom Cruise,
John Travolta, and also Lisa Marie Presley belong to the followers.
One of the most well known dutch followers is former LPF politician
Jim Janssen van Raaij. Recently in our country dozens of members
simultaniously walked out, that's unique as almost noone dares
to do so.
John: It is a cult because the Church turns people into robots.
The longer they are in there the more knowledge of Ron Hubbard
they abuse. Yes, to control people, so they practise mind control.
And that mind control is exactly the thing Ron Hubbard didn't
want.
SBS: What kind of method are these?
John: Gestapo methods.
SBS: We asked Scientology to comment on this but at the last moment
the interview got canceled.
By telephone the spokesman denied all charges.

Scientology Church offical reply:
"Everybody is free to leave our Church. It is not true that people
are not allowed to talk about our organisation. You may always
criticise us."
John: With the knowledge that i have now: Nobody should ever come
inside there, and one year ago I even wouldn't have thougth so.
But this can't be, this can not continue. The church has to
close down, and also all around the world. This just may not exist
anymore.
SBS: Yes, through all these famous followers Scientology still has a
lot of money, but soon probably a lot less parishioners.
