Let's look at how the sociologists define "cult," "sect," and "church."
First, Church:
"A "church" is simply a
body of religious believers that has social acceptance in society as a
valid organization, fairly standard religious practices and worship
that
is open to all, fairly large congregations and membership, and is part
of the local community and works within it for its betterment. "
Now Cult:
"There are some religious groups that are very small, have powerful
charismatic leaders, demand total seperation from society, and usually
have some kind of apocalyptic/"end of the world" message. These would
be classified *sociologically* (and I want to stress *sociologically*,
not theologically) as cults. This is not to suggest that these groups
are necessarily bad (indeed, many fully fledged churches can be very
bad), but to seperate that type of religious community from the
"church." "
Notice that the Mormon church is hardly "very small." Nor does it
demand total separation from society. Of course Christianity of 35 AD
would probably fit this definition rather well.
Finally, Sect:
"Between churches and cults are sects. Sects promote some seperation
from society, but it's more social (the world is impure). Sects tend
to
have fewer members than churches, gain new members more by conversion
than by babies being born into and raised in the faith as we see in
churches, and also tend to have doctrines and forms of worship that are
seen as less "mainstream" by society."
Which fits the Mormons? In fact the same post to which I referred goes
on to say:
"The LDS [Mormon] Church has traditionally been described by
sociologists
as a sect, as it has had the social characteristics of the paragraph
above.
However, today many sociologists feel that the LDS Church has moved
mostly into "church" status, as it has become considerably mainstreamed
and more people are seeing it as simply "another form of Christianity"
with some unique doctrines (again, we are speaking sociologically, not
theologically here). Rodney Stark, a major sociologist at the
Univerisity of Washington, has studied the LDS Church for years, and in
the 90's said that they had pretty much moved out of "sect" status and
into "church." Mr. Stark is not LDS himself, and in fact, I beleive he
professes no religious faith at all."
Of course these official definitions lack the derogative connotations
some people like to attach to the words. However those who want to use
"cult" in a derogatory sense usually prefer to work from a rather
flexible definition of the word and to find a way to apply it to anyone
they don't like. That makes the word rather meaningless except as a
derogative.
