Generally, we are. Where I live, however, things are dire. Yesterday I
had to run a gauntlet of god-botherers practically from my front door
into the centre of town. One conversation went like this:
"Hello"
"Is this about religion?"
"No"
"So, it's not about religion, or are you just splitting hairs?"
"We just want to talk to you about Jesus -"
"So you _are_ splitting hairs, it is about religion, and the answer's 'no
thanks'. *Goodbye*".
We used to have a decent bookshop and two university campuses that were
closed down a couple of years ago because the local "university", which
used to be a polytechnic, upped sticks and moved to more prestigious
accommodation.
This they call "regeneration". Every local business park is infested with
"redeemed church of this" and "That Ministry".

Mark, why don't you write a book about him? Seriously.
I wouldn't know where to begin. Seriously. I catch myself saying, "Like
Bob said..." a lot but it's all disjointed memories that arise by
circumstance.
It's also only been a little over two years. Still bothers me the way
things played out. It was just not *fair* that somebody that bright and
that funny had his life cut short at 46 (cripes, my current age at that).
I tell you, though, I've rarely run into such a dry, quick wit. Buncha
Jeebus freaks showed up at the door one day and said they wanted to
"share the bible" with him. He replied--very politely at that, "No
thanks, I'm not hungry" and shut the door.
(I cannot count the number of times I tried to get him to join the
newsgroup. He would have *so* fit in here. <G>)

I have an invisible friend that tells me jokes too. Usually evil
jokes.
I mostly resist retelling, esp on internationally published forums.
But then there's all these other people with an invisible friend or
three that doesn't tell them jokes. I just don't get that. They miss

Brilliant, Bilbo, brilliant!
If I could only claim credit.
My (now deceased) close friend Bob I talk about now and again came up
with that one. The man was one of the funniest people this planet has
known...
I pity the fundies. First you embarrass them with (Bob's) wit, then rub
it in with your honesty. Is there no depth to which you will not stoop?
It's that atheist immorality you hear so much about...

Oh dear... it's started. Thought the UK was pretty much immune to this sort
of twaddle.
God made the engines fail so that the atheist pilot and the atheist
co-pilot could show that they were more potent than God.

The amazing thing is that the fricking idiots who make such a claim
obviously don't realize that the two sentences above just don't play
well together. If it's a "textbook" scenario, the pilot has obviously
gone through it multiple times in a simulator as part of his training.
What possible reason is there to bring some deity into the picture to
explain his success when he had to execute it in the real world? The
passengers should spend the rest of their spared lives thanking the
captain, and the airline who trained him, before they thank some
imaginary sky fairy.
Oh dear... it's started. Thought the UK was pretty much immune to this sort
of twaddle.

I can see the god now... "Ok, all you boarding that 777, I'm going to
touch you now, so you'll have a crash landing. Then I'll make you live
through it so you can sing my praises."

That reminds me of something that happened here in Edmonton 20 years
ago. Back then, a tornado touched down at the north-east edge of the
city at a trailer park. A number of people were killed and it was
every bit as bad as you could imagine. As with all disasters, there
were a few survivors left with virtually nothing, yet they still
managed to thank gawd for sparing them from doom.
It struck me as rather ironic that people were thanking gawd for
saving them from an act of gawd. Imagine, if you will, getting shot in
the back by some thug and ending up a quadriplegic. Would it make
sense to give the same thug a hug & kiss and thank him for not
shooting you in the head?

said, "Thank you God, for protecting us from that rock you threw at us."

I'd rather have this "god" ignore me so I can land in a plane that
doesn't crash. :-)
