A troll is somebody with a pathetic need for attention. The christers who
come to alt.atheism are nearly all trolls. Another example of trolls
are the microsoft defenders who used to harass the os/2 newsgroups and now
harass the linux newsgroups.

Way Back When, a "troll" was somebody who deliberately argued a point of
view opposite to their own in order to get a rise out of people. For
example, an atheist who posted pretending to be a christian would be a
troll.
Nowadays, any old loon is called a troll.

The fictitious troll lives in Norway under bridges and bushes from
where he can waylay unsuspecting travellers. He jumps out and
tries to enslave people but is so stupid people just laugh at
him. He usually depicted as some kind of dwarf with a large
grotesque looking face.

I used a slightly misleading descripton. The troll is part of
Norweigan Legend and was originally a giant.
