Object: TROY: Movie About Homer's Iliad (2004)
Plot Summary for Troy (2004)
In 1193 B.C., Prince Paris (Bloom) of Troy stole the beautiful Greek woman, Helen
(Kruger), away from her husband, Menelaus, the king of Sparta, setting the two
nations at war with each other, as the Achaean Greeks began a bloody siege of
Troy, led by Agamemnon (Cox), that lasted for a decade. Bana plays Hector, the
greatest Trojan warrior; Byrne plays Briseis, a Trojan queen who is taken by and
married to Achilles and later appropriated by Agamemnon, causing strife amongst
the Greeks.

Summary of the plot of The lliad
The plot of Homer's ILIAD centers around the Trojan War which rages for ten years
between the Greeks (or Achaeans) and the Trojans. The war is caused by the
irresponsible actions of Paris, son of Priam, who is called upon to judge a
beauty contest between the goddesses Aphrodite, Hera and Athena. All three of the
goddesses offer bribes in order to tilt Paris' decision in their favor, but Paris
declares the winner to be Aphrodite, who has promised him the hand of the
beautiful Helen. Helen, as it turns out, is the wife of Menelaus, an Achaean
chieftain, and the Achaean expedition to recover her escalates into a
full-fledged war against the city of Troy.
However, there are conflicts within the Achaean ranks. A fight breaks out between
King Agamemnon and star warrior Achilles when Agamemnon endangers the Achaean
forces by disrespecting the priest of Apollo. The priest, Chryses, offers a
healthy ransom to Agamemnon in exchange for the return of his daughter, Chryseis,
who Agamemnon has taken as a prize. Agamemnon stubbornly refuses, and asks Apollo
to cut down the Achaeans with a plague.
Achilles is appalled by Agamemnon's selfish behavior and demands that the girl
returned to her father or he will not participate in Agamemnon and Menelaus' war.
Agamemnon agrees to return Chryseis, but takes Achilles' wife Briseis in her
place. Heartbroken, Achilles calls upon his mother, the sea nymph Thetis, and
begs her to intercede on his behalf, calling up an old debt owed her by Zeus and
asking him to impede the Achaeans' progress to punish Agamemnon.
Thetis approaches Zeus and fulfills her son's request. Zeus agrees, though he is
cautious of provoking the wrath of his wife Hera, who is sympathetic to the
Achaean cause.
As Achilles sulks at home, the war continues. Even without his talents, the
Achaeans are able to bear down so hard upon the Trojans that Trojan leader Hector
has to return home to request special prayers and sacrifices to the gods in order
to shift their luck. While he is in the city, he visits his family, and his
brother Paris, who is also sulking at home. Soon after this, the tide turns in
the Trojans favor, and the Achaeans are left with no recourse but to ask Achilles
to return to the battle. Achilles refuses, but grants his dear friend Patroclus
permission to lead in his stead, garbed in his own personal armor.
Patroclus fights gallantly and turns the tide of battle in the Achaeans' favor
once again, but through the intervention of Apollo, he is killed by Hector. After
an intense struggle, the Achaeans gain possession of Patroclus' body and flee
back to their camp. Achilles is distraught when he learns of his friend's demise
and decides to return to the battle in order to wreak vengeance upon Hector.
However, he has no gear to fight in as Hector has stripped his armor from
Patroclus' corpse. This problem is solved by the intervention of Thetis, who begs
the smith of the gods, Hephaestus to forge a new armor and a mighty shield for
Achilles.
Achilles returns to the battle, slaying a great number of Trojans in his pursuit
of Hector. Finally, the two arch-foes come face-to -face in a head on charge and
Hector's throat is impaled by Achilles' spear. With his dying breath, Hector begs
Achilles not to defile his corpse. Achilles nonetheless drags the body from the
back of his chariot, much to the dismay of Apollo. Zeus recommends that a ransom
be given to Achilles in exchange for the body, and reluctantly, Achilles
surrenders the body to Priam, Hector's father.
Hector's body is taken back to Troy and given a grand cremation worthy of a man
of his stature.

Review of the New Movie: Troy
The story behind ‘Troy’ has its base in Homer’s “The Iliad”. This long winded
poem tells the various Greek myths and legends that we know and love.
Although the background to this wonderful story is a little confusing and at
times appears to be a mythological ‘Shortland Street’ – it develops into a tale
of honour, destiny and of course – love.
Our story begins at the wedding of Peleus, King of Thessaly, with nearly all the
gods and goddesses in attendance. Eris, the goddess of strife, angry because she
hadn’t been invited threw a golden apple at the happy wedding-goers and said,
"The fairest shall have it!"
The goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena each thought herself the prettiest, so
they all ran to pick it up. When they saw that all three of them wanted it, they
became angry, and started an argument.
The wedding broke up and the gods and goddesses returned to Mount Olympus with
Hera, Aphrodite and Athena still fighting. Zeus decided that someone must be the
judge of the three, and so to end the quarrel; he looked down on Earth and saw
Paris, the son of King Priam, King of Troy.
Paris was very handsome (Orlando Bloom), and Zeus thought he would make a good
judge of which of the three was the prettiest. Each of the goddesses went to him
and tried to bribe him to give her the apple. Hera said she would give him power
and wealth. Athena said she would give him wisdom and victory in battle, and
Aphrodite said she would give him the most beautiful woman in the world - Helen.
Helen is shot by an arrow by the Greek goddess Aphrodite (actually by her son
Eros), to make her fall in love with Paris.
All happy ever after? Sadly no – because as Paris knew, Helen was already married
to Menelaus, King of Sparta. Paris fetched Helen from Sparta and brought her back
to Troy, incurring the wrath of the King.
Menelaus (feeling quite upset by this time) gathered Helens’ old suitors,
Menelaus’ brother Agamemnon (powerful King of the Mycenaean’s), who united the
tribes of Greece and employed the gorgeous warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) in an
attempt to retrieve Helen from the walled city of Troy….
With this dramatic storyline, the movie of ‘Troy’ surely going to be a
blockbuster hit, and even knowing the twists and turns I’m sure it will be full
of surprises! – and with Brad Pitt and Orlando together in one movie – I’m buying
my tickets in advance!

Themes in THE ILIAD
The Shield of Achilles (Book XVIII)
"And first Hephaestus makes a great and massive shield, blazoning well-wrought
emblems..." The contrasts between war and peace are sharp. The pictures on the
shield of Achilles are symbols representing the Greek Ethos and its antithesis.
It is about the city at war and the city at peace. The city at peace is
prosperous. Peace allows joy, love, sexuality, continuance of the species, law
and justice, festivals and harvest, all life in perfect balance. The antithesis
is the city at war, where hate, chaos, death and destruction conflict with the
Greek Ethos.
"And he forged the Ocean River's mighty power girdling round the outmost rim..."
The Ocean is the eternal symbol of change. In life, change is the only constant
factor. The symbolism on the shield of Achilles is the essence of Greek culture,
hence it becomes a theme for Homer.
Death Rites
The ancient Greeks of Homer's time were very concerned with proper death rites.
In book XIX, Achilles is concerned about the body of his beloved friend
Patroclus, slain in battle. Achilles says, "...worms will breed and seethe,
defile the man's corpse..." The Greeks believed that the spirit of the dead
person would be chased by dogs around the earth unless it was burned on the
funeral pire. In this section (XIX), Thetis, Achilles demi-god mother, preserves
the flesh of the slain Patroclus, until the proper death rites can be performed.
In book XXIV, Hector, Trojan enemy of Achilles, slayer of Patroclus, is slain by
Achilles. The god Apollo pities the dead Hector and protects his flesh from "all
corruption", even from ripping apart, as Achilles drags him about intending to
dishonor the corpse. Priam, Hector's father, pleads with Achilles for the body of
his son, in order that Hector may have the proper death rites performed.
The Role of Women
Homer's THE ILIAD is a great representation of the impact that women have on
society. Not only are the women in this book portrayed as beautiful, they also
have immense strength, power, craft and skill. THE ILIAD is a story narrating the
events of the Trojan war, but if we take a deeper look, much of this story
revolves around feminism. The war is a result of the retaliation of the Acheans
for the kidnapping of Helen. Helen is the wife of the Achean Chieftain Menelaus.
She was taken to Troy and to win back his wife, Menelaus must go to war with the
Trojans. If we take a look into the underlying issues, the war was fought for a
woman, and she plays a very important role in THE ILIAD.
----------------------------------
Character Summary of Homer's THE ILIAD
1. The Gods
Zeus - the king of the gods of Olympus. As a tool of destiny he is neutral in the
war, but shows empathy toward Hektor and Priam.
Poseidon - the ruler of the sea and a strong supporter of the Achaian cause.
Hermes - the messenger of the gods. Hermes favors the Achaians in the Trojan war.
Hera - the wife and sister of Zeus and the most fanatical supporter of the
Achaians.
Hades - the god of the dead.
Artemis - goddess of chastity, fighting, and wild animals. Artimis fights for the
Trojans.
Ares - lover of Aphrodite who fights on the side of the Trojans.
Apollo - god of prophecy, light, poetry, and music who fights on the side of the
Trojans.
Aphrodite - goddess of love who plays a large part in the war on the side of the
Trojans.
2. The Mortals
Achilles - is the primal character in THE ILIAD. Achilles is a fierce Greek
warrior who is driven by such emotions as pride, honor, revenge, and, too often,
rage. He is the epitome of the great warriors of his time.
Patrokolos - is a close friend of Achilles. A fine warrior in his own right,
Patrokolos fights along side Achilles against the Trojans. If Achilles represents
rage, Patrokolos represents control. The death of Patrokolos at the hands of
Hektor sparks in Achilles a tirade that will not end until Hektor is dead.
Agamemnon - is the king of the Greeks. Agamemnon rules, not always wisely, by
emotions. He is constantly taking advice from Nestor, while making few informed
decisions on his own. However, he is king and he is duly respected for that.
Odysseus - represents age and experience in THE ILIAD. Throughout the epic,
Odysseus remains calm. Odysseus is used to balance the erratic and emotional
actions of Achilles and Agamemnon.
Nestor - takes the roll of counselor in THE ILIAD. His advice to both Agamemnon
and Achilles serves much the same purpose as does that of Odysseus. Nestor is a
supreme motivator and wise counselor.
Hektor - is the arch nemesis of Achilles. Hektor is the commander of the Trojan
army. Hektor's prowess in battle is second only to that of Achilles. It is
Hektor's killing of Patrokolos that brings Achilles back into the war. Although
Hektor is the enemy of Achilles, he is not necessarily seen as a bad person.
Hektor has strong ties to his family and holds honor and other such values
highly. Hektor falls violently at the hands of Achilles.
Priam - is the father of Hektor and king of the Trojans. Priam evokes a feeling
of compassion that was previously lacking in Achilles. It is through Priam that
Achilles sees his enemies as people with families of their own.

Hissarlik
Hissarlik was the location of Troy, famous city of Greek legend, on the
northwestern corner of Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey. The legendary founder
of the city was Ilus, the son of Tros, from whom the name Troy was derived. The
son and successor of Ilus was Laomedon, who was slain by the hero Hercules, when
Hercules captured the city. The Trojan War occurred during the reign of
Laomedon's son Priam, which resulted in the capture and destruction of the city.
The Troy that appears in the Homeric poems was long regarded as a purely
legendary city. In 1870 the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann began
excavations but due to lack of permission from the government, was forced to
postpone his digging until 1873. That year, he unearthed the actual stone walls
and battlements of an ancient city on the mound called Hissarlik, about 4 miles
from the plain of the Scamander River, separating it from the Aegean Sea, and
equidistant from the Dardanelles. Schliemann's excavations were continued after
his death by his assistant, Wilhelm Dörpfeld (1853-1940), whose work in 1893 and
1894 threw new and important light on Schliemann's discoveries.
Between 1932 and 1938 new excavations were carried on at the site by the
University of Cincinnati, under the direction of the American archaeologist Carl
Blegen (1887-1971). On the mound of Hissarlik, the following successive
settlements have been determined: Troy I, an early settlement with a wall built
of small stones and clay, its date being perhaps about 3000 BC; Troy II, a
prehistoric fortress, with strong ramparts, a palace, and houses, dating from the
3rd millennium BC; Troy III, IV, and V, prehistoric villages successively built
on the debris of Troy II during the period from 2300 to 2000 BC; Troy VI, a
fortress, including a larger area than any of the preceding settlements, with
huge walls, towers, gates, and houses dating from 1900 to 1300 BC or later; Troy
VIIA, a reconstruction of Troy VI, built in the later part of this period after
the city had been destroyed by an earthquake; Troy VIIB and VIII, Greek villages,
of simple stone houses, dating from about 1100 BC to the 1st century BC, and Troy
IX, the acropolis of the Graeco-Roman city of Ilion, or New Ilion, with a temple
of Athena, public buildings, and a large theater, and existing from the 1st
century BC to about AD 500.
Schliemann discovered the first five settlements and identified Troy II with the
Homeric Troy. Dörpfeld's discoveries, confirmed by Blegen, proved that the
Homeric Troy must be identified with Troy VIIA, which was destroyed by fire about
the traditional date of the Trojan War. The tradition is believed to reflect a
real war between the Greeks of the late Mycenaean period and the inhabitants of
the Troad, or Troas, in Anatolia, part of present-day Turkey. Modern
archaeological excavations have shown that Troy was destroyed by fire in the
early 12th century BC, the traditional date of the war, and that the war may
actually have resulted from the desire either to plunder the wealthy city or to
put an end to Troy's commercial control of the Dardanelles.
Legendary accounts of the war traced its origin to a golden apple, inscribed 'for
the fairest' and thrown by Eris, goddess of discord, among the heavenly guests at
the wedding of Peleus, the ruler of Myrmidons, and Thetis, one of the Nereids.
The award of the apple to Aphrodite, goddess of love, by Paris, son of King Priam
of Troy, secured for Paris the favor of the goddess and the love of the beautiful
Helen of Troy, wife of Menelaus, the king of Sparta. Helen went with Paris to
Troy, and an expedition to avenge the injury to Menelaus was placed under the
command of Agamemnon, king of Mycenae. Agamemnon's force included many famous
Greek heroes, the most noted of whom were Achilles, Patroclus, the two Ajaxes,
Teucer, Nestor, Odysseus, and Diomedes.
After the Trojans refused to restore Helen to Menelaus, the Greek warriors
assembled at the Bay of Aulis and proceeded to Troy in 1000 ships. The siege
lasted ten years, the first nine of which were uneventful. In the tenth year,
Achilles withdrew from battle because of his anger with Agamemnon; Achilles'
action furnished Homer with the theme of the Iliad. To avenge the death of his
friend Patroclus, Achilles returned to battle and killed Hector, the principal
Trojan warrior. Subsequent events, described in later epic poems, included
Achilles victories over Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, and Memnon, king of
Ethiopia, and the death of Achilles at the hands of Paris.
The city of Troy was captured at last by treachery. A force of Greek warriors
gained entrance to the city by hiding in the interior of a large wooden horse.
Subsequently the Greeks sacked and burned the city. Only a few Trojans escaped,
the most famous being Aeneas, who led the other survivors to what is present-day
Italy; this story is told by Vergil in the Aeneid.
The return of the Greek warriors to Greece inspired epic poems, the most
celebrated being that of Odysseus, whose 10-year wanderings and arrival in Ithaca
are told in Homer's Odyssey. Archaeologists today are still excavating this site
to learn more about the new settlements on the site and any other important
information or findings they missed over the last 100 years or more. Even today,
our culture has invented games based on the past culture. There’s a game, Great
Work of Roke Mage the Half Elven One, based upon the legends of Hissarlik.

Plot Summary for Troy (2004)

<< as some one who lives less than an hours drive from Knossos>>

This story is a fantasy, based on what may have been a truth.
A bit like the story of Jesus.

The stupidest thing about the film is the HUGE fleets and the HUGH

armies.

This is supposed to be 1500 years before old 'gay boy Jebus' was

born.

Just another excuse for Zionist NAZI Hollywood to excuse a

holocaust.

Oh! so boooring!
No I will not be wasting my money on this crap.

Sounds like we end up spending alot of time at home away from the

conspiracy?

Very cryptic, but I never did enjoy crosswords.
What conspiracy in particular.
The Zionist NAZI's, that is not a conspiracy, they are far too

powerful to

need to conspire.
Good decent Jews all over the world, tear themselves apart over the

evil of

Zionism.
Just like good decent Mericans watch while Christian/Morons engage in
Abuse/Torture.

And Black and White Hollywood Pictures. Well they just do not help.
So, infantile film TROY, no. The works of Homer, yes.

Are you Jewish and German? I was reading about Polish Jews during WW2,
interesting.

Thanks for link to nationalist thread.

Stop seeing people (as your state teaches you) in terms of Nation,
Religion, Class or Ethnicity.
These just keep you a slave to your state.
Go on, be free, be a Human Being, not a toy of you State.

I love to study history. I like studying about the origins of the state and in
anthropology the origins of political organization beginning with families bands
tribes etc.
I also love to study US history, just plain fun.
I love studying the history of religion, economics and race.
And yes I suppose this affects me like everything else I do, but why should I
ignore them or imagine they don't exist? Are you really saying to be careful
instead of stop doing it?

Gabriel Yared spent five months composing, replacing it with one James
Horner spent a few weeks paying four orchestrators a veritable pittance

Anyway Bradd Pit does not even look Greek.
Have you seen the *boy they have for the Eurovision Song Contest?
I am sure he is far *prettier. Though I am not a Gay expert.
