truce will not last much longer |
"FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP) - U.S. warplanes and helicopters firing heavy
machine-guns, rockets and cannons hammered fighters in the besieged city of
Fallujah, and the commander of Marines here warned Wednesday that a fragile,
often-shaken truce will not last much longer. "
I guess the Marines and by extension our military have a different idea of
what a truce is.

A serious attempt at a cease fire, which most non US news agency say never
existed, would have troops withdraw from the affected area. This would be
especially true if the administration actually believed any of the lip
service they are feeding us about it being "gangs" of rabble rousers, rather
than an effective organized resistance movement supported by the people.

Bush should read a little about his father's war and find out what the
people of Europe suffered supporting their resistance fighters under German

I'm stating as a fact that they along with their print media counterparts at

portray a negative distortion of our efforts.
If not then they should be reporting the casualities and not just the

They have, idjit.

They havve, moron.
They should be reporting US troops firing on unarmed, people dressed in UN

of
the world has been doing.
Let's pretend that this particular slander did not originate from the
terminus of your alimentary channel. Just which issue of Al Jazeera did you
get this bit from? And are you going to tell me next that the terrorists
and thugs in Iraq are above dressing in UN blue or using ambulances to carry
out their crimes? Is there no lie you won't disgrace with by repeating?
Oh and while we're talking about that revered world government, just how
have they ever benefitted anyone? Their corrupt oil for food program
directly led to this war. Their pathetic attempt to 'help' in the postwar
ended with the first car bomb to come along. Yeah, let's entrust our
national security to them. That'll go well.
The army taught me about an insurgency in the Philippines that was

Now this qaulifies as the *stupidest* remark I've heard to date. Iraqis are

Ah yes, still on your defeatist BS military assessments. Don't let the fact
that you were completely discredited with your dire, glooam and doom
assessments during the war when we were consolidatnig our positions outside
Baghdad. We didn't have enough "boots on the ground" then either. Do you

of Fallujah, and the commander of Marines here warned Wednesday that a
fragile, often-shaken truce will not last much longer. "
I guess the Marines and by extension our military have a different idea
of what a truce is.
It seems nobody is in control over there. Bremer and the military don't
even seem to have been introduced. That hand picked "governing council" is
being pretty much ignored all the way around. The Marines seem to be
utterly on their own, answering to nobody at all. I've read statements
that they made "demands" as regards how the attempted cease fire was
conducted (the result being they didn't have to cease fire in the cease
fire). They contradict Bremer on a regular basis. The "governing council"
keeps trying to negotiate and the Marines blow them off with comments
they're just going to kill Sadr and that's that.
It's *amazing stuff to watch.
You know, Sadr is at *the* mosque of the Shia movement (Iman Ali IIRC). We
blunder through like water buffalo in a china closet, we stand a good
chance of turning the *entire movement against us. Not just the Iraqi
Shiite but Shiites. We'll look back on the violence now as the "calm" days...

One of the single most insane, self-defeating things you
could ever do is use the military to "police" a population.
Policing tasks discretion, it takes training. It has to come
as second nature. It's just too difficult to hand a young man
a gun and send him into a dangerous situation, surrounded
by unfriendly people (many of them trying to kill him), and
tell him to use force with discretion.
Once you train that into someone, once it becomes their
automatic reaction, how do you ever place them in a
combat situation again?
But we're going the other way.
We're taking Marines, people who have been trained (to
the point that it's an automatic reaction) to fight, and we're
asking them to "police" Iraq.
The military has never been suited to the job, and that's not
a bad thing. What is bad is the politicians who can't get this
simple & obvious fact through their thick skulls.
