Truth:
A Fabulous Concept *
Truth. We appreciate it, like it, claim to live by it.
No one likes being lied to, especially when we know that the deceivers
are benefiting from taking us for a ride.
The question becomes especially acute around election time, of course,
but that's not today's issue.
No, what I'm thinking about today is the burgeoning youth-oriented ad
campaigns against tobacco use.
Florida was the first state to use that approach to reach kids about
smoking, so if you live in Florida, like I used to, you're familiar
with the "Truth" campaign, which has been quite successful and is a
model for what's going on in other states.
The campaign produces ads focusing on confrontations between "SWAT"
teams (Students Working Against Tobacco) and tobacco industry
representatives. It even produces elaborate, fake trailers that are
shown in movie theaters, that are so skillfully made you don't know
up until the very last minute that the preview you're watching
isn't really for a suspense flick about a mysterious mass murderer:
it's about the human toll of smoking.
Other states have followed. The Massachusetts Department of Public
Health has a website devoted to encouraging kids to "Get Outraged"
about 470,000 tobacco-related deaths every year. "If you've had
enough of tobacco company lies" the site says, "click on do
something and fight back."
The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi runs a similar site called
"Question It." The site banner reads "Your body is a
battleground. Your mind is a weapon."
Truth. Get outraged. Question it.
I agree, and I agree totally.
Let's question. Let's tell the truth. Not just about tobacco, but
about a few other things as well.
Perhaps tobacco is the only legal product that, as the Mississippi site
claims, "when used as intended, results in death."
But it's not the only legal activity that, when used as intended,
results in death.
Ever heard of abortion?
Tobacco may be blamed for 470,000 deaths a year. Abortion kills more
than twice that. In this country alone.
Tobacco companies may manipulate and shade the truth (as do all
companies of any product that advertise. That's what the purpose of
advertising is - manipulation), but they've got nothing on the
Powers That Be that promote abortion as a "safe," and morally
indifferent act, of no more significance than getting a tooth pulled.
The abortion lies come in two categories. The first relates to what
abortion is.
A few decades ago, people who were interested in promoting legal
abortion came up with a clever idea. They decided that they needed to
shift the way Americans thought about abortion, and the best way to do
this was to convince us that abortion isn't about abortion, but about
something called "choice." (for more on this time in history, try
to find a copy of Aborting America by Bernard Nathanson.) So, thirty
years later, we're deep into choice, deep in rhetoric that
manipulates your thinking away from what actually happens in the womb
and towards some abstract idea that no right-minded person can oppose:
choice.
The truth: In abortion, a unique, helpless, voiceless No one, of
course, wants you to think about that. Have you ever noticed that while
television news are willing to show you every other kind of horror, you
never, ever see photos of aborted babies on television? Have you
noticed that on television, people don't talk about "preborn
babies" - they talk about the far less human-sounding "fetus?" I
find that the usage has even crept into television sitcoms and dramas -
it's so strange, so counterintuitive, so alien to the way people talk
in everyday life, it simply screams "political agenda" on the part of
writers and producers.
They don't want you to think about the truth.
Secondly, we're lied to about the consequences of abortion for women.
Study after study shows that women who have abortions have higher rates
of complications and difficulties in future pregnancies. No one can
figure out why incidences of infertility and ectopic pregnancy have
skyrocketed in the past thirty years, but perhaps that's because no one
wants to talk truth about either sexually-transmitted diseases or
abortion. The next frontier of deception just might be cancer: A
growing body of medical studies is finding links between abortion and
breast cancer.
There seem to be warning labels on everything else, no matter how
innocuous, no matter how questionable the actual danger they pose -
except abortion.
A lot of folks seem to be determined to get kids (and the rest of us,
too) riled up about deception for profit, so that we'll get mad as hell
about being lied to and simply refuse to take it anymore.
I agree.
Truth. Question it. Get outraged.
