Uganda drops terror charge against US evangelist

KAMPALA, March 25 (Reuters) - Uganda
has dropped terrorism charges against a
U.S. evangelist who police said was caught
with assault rifles hidden in his bedroom
just days before last month's election,
the man's lawyer said on Saturday.
Peter Waldron, a 59-year-old from Wyoming
who had claimed close links to President Yoweri Museveni's
family, is expected to be deported on Sunday,
lawyer MacDosman Kabega told Reuters.
"The director of public prosecutions (DPP) simply
stated to us that they had lost interest in the matter
and the charges were being withdrawn," Kabega said.
"We think my client might be thrown out
of the country tomorrow."
Waldron was arrested on February 20 and
charged with having four unlicensed AK-47 rifles
and 180 bullets.
Along with six fellow suspects, three men from
Uganda and three from neighbouring Democratic
Republic of Congo, he denied terrorism and
had been due back in court on Tuesday.
Waldron had lived in Uganda for four years and
worked as an information technology consultant
at the east African nation's Health Ministry.
He was also the founder of an evangelical group,
and police say he planned to start a political party
based on Christian principles when he was arrested
three days before Uganda held its first multi-party
election for 25 years.

Ever notice how Christians almost never denounce the crimes and abuses
committed by other Christians?
