BAY AREA author and activist DAVE FITZERALD and Attorney Eddie Tabash
have joined the list of blockbuster speakers appearing next month at
the 33rd National Convention of American Atheists. We're heading for
Seattle, WA. for a weekend of exciting talks, panels, workshops and
social activities, April 6-8.
* DAVE FIZZGERALD, "one of the busiest Atheist activists in the Bay
Area," is the tireless Action Coordinator for the San Francisco
Atheists, and founder of the Bay Area Darwin Day celebration
"Evolutionpalooza." He is also director of student outreach for the
Garrison-Martineau Project, a non-profit educational organization that
encourages dialogue between believers and nonbelievers. Mr. Fizgerald
is also author of the forthcoming book, "The 10,000 Christs and the
Evaporating Jesus," which examines the historicity of Christ.
* EDDIE TABASH is a Constitutional and Civil Rights attorney from
California. In election year 2000 he finished second out of a field of
four candidates in a primary race for the California State Assembly.
He was the only open Atheist to be a major contender for a state
legislature seat. He has served on the Platform Committee and State
Central Committee of the California Democratic Party, and a major
spokesperson for Atheist, Freethought and Humanist causes.
* Military Atheists are welcome Friday morning for a gathering of MAAF,
the Military Atheists & Freethinkers group. Check the program for
details!
* JULIA SWEENEY, comedian and star of television and movies. Ms.
Sweeney has been hailed for her acclaimed monologue God Said, ha! She
has profiled her Atheism in Letting Go of God.
* MASSIMO PIGLIUCCI, professor at State University of New York where he
teaches philosophy and evolutionary biology. Author of several books
on biology, Dr. Pigliucci will participate in a debate on the topic of
evolution.
* HENRY JONES, Psychiatrist. Dr. Jones will speak on "The Manufacture
of Mental Illness" focusing on the destructive consequences of
religious belief.
* ROBERT M. PRICE, a former pastor with a doctorate in theology, Mr.
Price is no longer a religious believer, and has written several
critical books examining religion. He is a philosophy instructor and
editor of the The Journal of Higher Criticism. At the convention, he
will speak on "Damnable Syllogism: The Logic of the Christian
Atonement."
* FRANK ZINDLER is Editor of American Atheist Press, and a former
professor in biological sciences. He is a world renowned expert in
Biblical history and period languages, and the author of several books
exploring religion, the alleged historicity of Jesus Christ and related
topics.
* EDWIN KAGIN, National Legal Director for American Atheists and
co-founder of Camp Quest, the national secular camp for Atheist,
Humanist and Freethought youngsters.
* There will be a Saturday afternoon panel discussion, "DOES IT REALLY
MATTER IF THE PUBLIC DOESN'T LIKE ATHEISTS," followed by an audience
Q&A.
Other Events: In addition to lectures and the debate, there will also
be the Friday Night Banquet Dinner (open to all convention
registrants); a Saturday night Life and Legacy Members Dinner; informal
social gatherings; and the Sunday Brunch Train Trip on the Spirit of
Washington complete with Brunch and a stop at the famous Columbus
Winery. The convention will also feature entertainment by
writer/musician Larry Gallagher (http://www.larrygallagher.com), and
the Smalkowski family.
