Hmmmm... Is it traditional or even precedented for the US to officially
mourn the passing of the Head of State of another country by doing this? If
not, then you have a point.
If we're doing it ONLY because he was a religious leader (no matter how
influential), that seems to be a clear violation of the Separation clause.
If we did it for Churchill, say, then it would be OK to do it for John Paul
II, since the Vatican is a country. If we didn't do it for any other
country's head of state, its another matter entirely.
Of course, this is the same President who signs US flags as souvenirs, so
why would you be surprised at how little he knows about tradition and
etiquette?

I'm not enamored with his decision to lower our flags. The Pope is
nominally a head of state, however, and I don't find this to be an egregious
act. It's a political pander, but it's not an insult to any but the most
sensitive or, as I suspect in this case, those most in search of being
insulted to justify one's own self-righteous mock-anger. As a practical
matter, this is an ideal time to pour yourself a nice tall glass of shut the
***** up! For the same reasons that it is politically wise for Bush to order
the flags lowered, it is a good idea to just let it him. It doesn't hurt
anybody. As a minority we atheists don't need to further marginalize
ourselves by constantly running around lookng for ever more outlandish ways
to ***** people off.

Disagree. Where else is one to vent but on usenet? I swear, that's
the genius of democracy -- let people blow off their steam. Otherwise,
no different than any other hierarchical society where those who rule
rob the ruled.
Speaking of which: how the ***** is the Catholic church so rich
anyway??? Yet they're closing down Catholic schools here in NYC for a
lack of funds!! Frankly, I'd rather that there is a God...hate for all
the thieves and idiots to get off scot-free, as it were.
For the same reasons that it is politically wise for Bush to order
the flags lowered, it is a good idea to just let it him. It doesn't
hurt
anybody.
This is true. We're just talking theory here, however. In theory,
it's absolutely disgusting to pander, and then for such a person. Why,
the Vatican killed more Jews than the Nazis ever did, altogether...too
bad these groups never just wipe each other out and get it over with:
what do I care if cockroach A eats cockraoch B?
As a minority we atheists don't need to further marginalize
ourselves by constantly running around lookng for ever more
outlandish ways

Frankly, folks'll be p.o.'d no matter what. So I take after Lenny
Bruce, who said of the FCC: "if they don't get it, ***** 'em."

could set the flag anywhere he likes...even at one-quarter up the mast
if he really wanted to...I guess.

If you think about it....the 2000 honourable heroes (those US
soldiers) died to save a bundle of people in the future. If you allow
a fanatic/lunatic to continue with their actions/schemes in secrecy,
without the US etc being allowed to intervene, then they're eventually
going to obtain enough firepower to blow the crap out of you. So what
do you reckon? Stop the weeds/bugs before they become unstoppable? Or
allow them to gain strength to a point where you could no longer stop
them from causing you a lot of pain in the future? This is called
slashing the grass, and destroying the roots. You could slash the
grass...but the grass will keep growing if you don't destroy the
roots.
So if you think about it....all those stupid protesters that say 'no
war!! peace!!!' and all that crap....they fail to realise that if you
don't stop the REAL lunatics, then one day - when their neighbours,
friends, family get killed during a massive attack initiated by the
lunatics...the stupid idiots are going to say 'why the hell didn't we
stop them?....when we could have actually done something?'. And
actually....while we may stop some of the lunatics today, it may be
too late already....because other lunatic leaders have nuclear and
biological capabilities already. This is sad, because it's a unstable
bomb situation. So I say ... good on him (bush) for at least trying to
stop whatever he can stop.

The UN, as well. Remember, we had their help (France, Germany, etc.)
after 9/11. Unfortunately for the world, the lunatic leader averted his
eyes because Afghanistan wasn't a good enough target; not a shiny enough
target. Iraq, however, was, and as a side benefit, they'll get to
remove a despot and get an allied country with oil. How could we lose?
Unfortunately for the world, due to the averting of eyes away from
criminal despots like Osama bin Laden and Kim Jong-Il, the lunatic
leader of the United States has done more for the enemy than any "Looney

If you think about it....the 2000 honourable heroes (those US

Really? Who attacked us on 9/11?
Iraq didn't attack US during 911. But after US got attacked, they
didn't just sit around doing nothing. They did the right thing and
butt-kicked whoever and whatever they thought could be (or was) a
threat, and they butt-kicked a target that they could handle, which
was also a target that deserved it.
If you allow
a fanatic/lunatic to continue with their actions/schemes in secrecy,

Who are the REAL lunatics in this case? Please be succinct, clear, and
honest. Those that fly planes into buildings or those that bomb
countries that _MIGHT_ be a threat later, while ignoring REAL threats?
The real lunatics are the fanatics that take over public transport
with innocent people aboard and smash them into buildings...and those
that don't mind to wipe out a massive bunch of innocent people with a
single blow. Well...as you know ...the leader of iraq at that time was
a real moron....one that forced people to vote for him, so that more
than 99 percent or something like that voted for him. Of course, he
and his trash-can vermin sons performed various atrocious acts on
folks as well. So there's no telling what kind of secret schemes they
may have been up to...regarding weapons manufacturing, and arsenal
build-up.
then one day - when their neighbours,
friends, family get killed during a massive attack initiated by the
lunatics...the stupid idiots are going to say 'why the hell didn't we
stop them?
We on the left are trying to stop the lunatics, Kenny. This is where
the "no war" people come from. They're trying to stop lunatic leaders
from giving the REAL lunatics the ultimate power.
The no-war people, as I mentioned, don't appear to realise that if we
don't stop these lunatic countries with lunatic leaders from building
ultra powerful weapons, then one day, these no-war idiots (and their
friends and family) could well be eating dirt from the unexpected
blast from a super-size bomb..or something similar.
....when we could have actually done something?'.
Yes. That's exactly what we're trying to do. Something to stop these
lunatic leaders.
And
actually....while we may stop some of the lunatics today, it may be
too late already....because other lunatic leaders have nuclear and
biological capabilities already.
Lunatic leaders like Bush?
Bush was always a good guy. For those people that reckon he's bad or a
lunatic, those people should go live under the rule of somebody like
saddam for a few years. Then these people would really see just how
clueless they really are.
This is sad, because it's a unstable
bomb situation. So I say ... good on him (bush) for at least trying to
stop whatever he can stop.
The UN, as well. Remember, we had their help (France, Germany, etc.)

eyes because Afghanistan wasn't a good enough target; not a shiny enough
target. Iraq, however, was, and as a side benefit, they'll get to
remove a despot and get an allied country with oil. How could we lose?
Well...see...the US is smart. They're free to choose and pick their
targets. Iraq was obviously a good one because it allowed the US to
kill a few birds with the one stone...or at least that was the plan.
That is...they aimed to achieve multiple objectives...which was quite
clever.
Unfortunately for the world, due to the averting of eyes away from
criminal despots like Osama bin Laden and Kim Jong-Il, the lunatic
leader of the United States has done more for the enemy than any "Looney
Liberal Lefty" could have ever done.
In the future, I know that folks are going to thank Bush for what he
did. I reckon he did a good job, considering all the tough
circumstances he's had to go through for his presidency. Rubbish
binny-lid laden and that korean star kidnapping moron (kim jong-il)
are going to get butt-kicked in due time.

Bush said that he doesn't care about bin Laden, and refuses to talk with

Yeah...unfortunately. It's a bit sad, but that may be the only way to
kick that loser's (jong-il's) butt, if he really has nuclear weapons.
If that clown wants war...then let's rumble...even if we all lose out

That's not what I heard bush say though. He said that he'll go after
those that were responsible for 911 and punish them. And USA is going
to deal with jong-il and his bunch of clowns next....right? Iraq was
actually a threat, but now it's no longer a threat...which is nice.
Some pretty sick priorities, donchathink?
I truly didn't recall bush saying that he didn't care about rubbish
binny anymore, and refuse to negotiate/talk with jong-il. I'll have to
check on the latest news about that.

are going to get butt-kicked in due time.
In due time? You mean, after the mushroom cloud? What happened to
good old preemptiveness?
Yeah...unfortunately. It's a bit sad, but that may be the only way to
kick that loser's (jong-il's) butt, if he really has nuclear weapons.
If that clown wants war...then let's rumble...even if we all lose out
in the end.
Bush said that he doesn't care about bin Laden, and refuses to talk
with
Jong-Il. Both are serious threats to our national and homeland
security. Yet Iraq, which WASN'T a threat to our security WAS
attacked.
It seems that DanielSan is confused about who is refusing to negotiate
with whom. It's Jong-Il who refuses to deal with the six-party talks
unless he has certain unilateral demands met. Daniel also seems to be
confused about the ability of US forces to deal with the hunt for bin
Laden *and* to take on other priorities at the same time.

Half-staff flags for pope questioned
00:00 am 4/06/05
Doug Erickson Wisconsin State Journal
A Madison secular organization is protesting Gov. Jim Doyle's order to fly
flags at half-staff at public buildings all week to remember Pope John Paul
II.
The gesture "appears like an endorsement of Roman Catholicism over other
religious viewpoints," said Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Freedom
From Religion Foundation.
Gaylor said her organization would have looked the other way if the order
had been for just Friday - the day of the pope's funeral - instead of all
week.
"This seems excessive," she said. "Not everyone in the country is Roman
Catholic, and (the pope's) not even American."
Doyle's executive order, issued Monday, followed President Bush's similar
order from Saturday. The governor's office had received calls from people
wondering if the president's order covered public buildings in Wisconsin,
said Doyle spokeswoman Melanie Fonder. Doyle's order cleared up any
confusion, she said.
Both orders cover only government buildings, not private facilities or
businesses, Fonder said.
Doyle grew up Catholic and attends Queen of Peace Catholic Church in
Madison. His executive order says the pope "was not only an inspirational
spiritual leader but also made a significant impact on social justice issues
and was a champion of peace."
Fonder said there is no connection between Doyle's personal beliefs and the
executive order. Numerous other governors of various faiths issued similar
orders, she said.
Federal statutes allow a president to lower flags not only upon the death of
principal figures of the U.S. government but also upon the death of "other
officials or foreign dignitaries." Given the prominence of the Vatican in
international affairs, the pope certainly falls in the latter category,
Fonder said.
Gaylor said she respects the private mourning of Catholics but protests
state-backed grieving.
The American Humanist Association in Washington, D.C., also opposes the
weeklong lowering of flags, said Tony Hileman, executive director.
"We have to ask whether this would be done for other cleric - the Dalai Lama
or Jewish or Muslim leaders."

I thought it was funny enough when folks attributed that accomplishment

The Soviets defeated communism. That is to say, the same greedy
oligarchy as we've got here drove their own system to the ground. If
it weren't for the "commies," as you call the opposition here, thieves
would have drove this place through the ground to hell a long time ago,

A British Obituary of Pope John Paul II
The Pope has blood on his hands
by Terry Eagleton
http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=105&ItemID=7578
John Paul II became Pope in 1978, just as the emancipatory 60s were
declining into the long political night of Ronald Reagan and Margaret
Thatcher. As the economic downturn of the early 70s began to bite, the
western world made a decisive shift to the right, and the transformation
of an obscure Polish bishop from Karol Wojtyla to John Paul II was part
of this wider transition. The Catholic church had lived through its own
brand of flower power in the 60s, known as the Second Vatican Council;
and the time was now ripe to rein in leftist monks, clap-happy nuns and
Latin American Catholic Marxists. All of this had been set in train by a
pope - John XIII - whom the Catholic conservatives regarded as at best
wacky and at worst a Soviet agent.
What was needed for this task was someone well-trained in the techniques
of the cold war. As a prelate from Poland, Wojtyla hailed from what was
probably the most reactionary national outpost of the Catholic church,
full of maudlin Mary-worship, nationalist fervour and ferocious
anti-communism. Years of dealing with the Polish communists had turned
him and his fellow Polish bishops into consummate political operators.
In fact, it turned the Polish church into a set-up that was, at times,
not easy to distinguish from the Stalinist bureaucracy. Both
institutions were closed, dogmatic, censorious and hierarchical, awash
with myth and personality cults. It was just that, like many alter egos,
they also happened to be deadly enemies, locked in lethal combat over
the soul of the Polish people.
Aware of how little they had won from dialogue with the Polish regime,
the bishops were ill-inclined to bend a Rowan-Williams-like ear to both
sides of the theological conflict that was raging within the universal
church. On a visit to the Vatican before he became Pope, the
authoritarian Wojtyla was horrified at the sight of bickering
theologians. This was not the way they did things in Warsaw. The
conservative wing of the Vatican, which had detested the Vatican Council
from the outset and done its utmost to derail it, thus looked to the
Poles for salvation. When the throne of Peter fell empty, the
conservatives managed to swallow their aversion to a non-Italian pontiff
and elected one for the first time since 1522.
Once ensconced in power, John Paul II set about rolling back the liberal
achievements of Vatican 2. Prominent liberal theologians were summoned
to his throne for a dressing down. One of his prime aims was to restore
to papal hands the power that had been decentralised to the local
churches. In the early church, laymen and women elected their own
bishops. Vatican 2 didn't go as far as that, but it insisted on the
doctrine of collegiality - that the Pope was not to be seen as capo di
tutti capi, but as first among equals.
John Paul, however, acknowledged equality with nobody. From his early
years as a priest, he was notable for his exorbitant belief in his own
spiritual and intellectual powers. Graham Greene once dreamed of a
newspaper headline reading "John Paul canonises Jesus Christ". Bishops
were summoned to Rome to be given their orders, not for fraternal
consultation. Loopy far-right mystics and Francoists were honoured, and
Latin American political liberationists bawled out. The Pope's authority
was so unassailable that the head of a Spanish seminary managed to
convince his students that he had the Pope's personal permission to
masturbate them.
The result of centring all power in Rome was an infantilisation of the
local churches. Clergy found themselves incapable of taking initiatives
without nervous glances over their shoulders at the Holy Office. It was
at just this point, when the local churches were least capable of
handling a crisis maturely, that the child sex abuse scandal broke. John
Paul's response was to reward an American cardinal who had assiduously
covered up the outrage with a plush posting in Rome.
The greatest crime of his papacy, however, was neither his part in this
cover up nor his neanderthal attitude to women. It was the grotesque
irony by which the Vatican condemned - as a "culture of death" -
condoms, which might have saved countless Catholics in the developing
world from an agonising Aids death. The Pope goes to his eternal reward
with those deaths on his hands. He was one of the greatest disasters for
the Christian church since Charles Darwin.

The left didn't like him, all the more reason to honor him.
Well, if you want to honor such a barbaric man, fine, that's your
choice, but what does it then make you ?

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-

More importantly, what does it make of the memory and sacrifice
of all the patriotic US citizens who fought, sacrificed and died for
that US Flag ?
Is the Vatican a "democracy"? Can anyone run for office there? Is there
freedom of religion, any religion, and freedom from religious discrimination?

That wasn't "the left". It was fact. He was not liked in the UL.
Popes rarely are - and this one caused major offence poking his nose
where it wasn't his business (the UE Constitution). The article merely
listed many of the reasons he is disliked.
Pretend it is "the left" so you can ignore it - but the reasons won't
go away.
