Not known in UK elections - what is the "stump" - is it the same as the

In Flipper's case, it's the objective case of the verb describing the the
state he's in, ie:
I stump
You stump
He/She stumps
We stump
They stump
Flipper is stumped.

It's what the candidates would stand on to give a speech. "Soap box" is
another expression.
As I understand it, the "hustings" is the little out-of-the-way towns? They
used to call them "whistle-stop tours" because the candidates would give
speeches at train stations as they traveled around in their rail cars.

Stump = tree stump, as in standing on a tree stump in the public park or
square in the 1800's. It was a very primative "multimedia" technology.

We have the latter term, too, but it has largely become obsolete (possibly from its
surfeit of syllables,) so I'm uncertain without bothering to look it up. "On the stump"
is 'out on the campaign trail, in public address mode'.
