Two studies appearing this week in the New England Journal of Medicine
confirm that a new vaccine is effective in preventing cervical cancer,
a disease that kills almost 300,000 women around the world each year.

I don't think anyone wants anyone's daughter to die.
What is at issue here is who will pay for it and will girls have to have
this vaccination.
Having the state pick up the bill is corporate welfare at its finest.
The big pharmaceutical companies are pressuring states to pay for this
because they'll make billions. It's no mystery who wrote Texas Governor
Rick Perry a check before he announced all girls in Texas must receive
this vaccination. Perry, BTW, is one of those GOP Christians you criticize.
Generally vaccinations are required when the disease is a nuisance to
public health. The HPV virus isn't casually spread like other diseases.
The state has no reason to mandate this vaccination. If the state
decides it needs to prevent cancer then perhaps it should outlaw
tobacco? How much power should the government have in this matter?
Personally I think all girls should have this vaccination. I just don't
think the taxpayer should fund it nor should the government mandate it.
My question is, is there a medical reason to give it to sixth graders?
I think the idea is to catch all girls before they become sexually
active. If a girl didn't become active until she was in college, would
it still work if she were to receive it before college?

Nice troll. But by now even your persona would know that abstinence
education does not stop kids from having sex, it just increases the
chance that they will get a STD and/or pregnant. But you may well be
right, that atheist parents are more concerned for the kid's welfare.

If girls do not get the vaccine young, then they are at the mercy of the sexual
history of their husbands to be even if they practice abstinence.
If this were a disease that primarily caused a lethal cancer in men, there would
be no question of a national mandatory vaccination programme.

True but those sensible parents that have their children vaccinated,
actually protect to some degree the children of those religious nuts.
By reducing the pool of those infected. If 90% of parents have their
daughters vaccinated, the incidence of cancer of the ovaries will
become a Christian woman's disease. Religious nut girls are usually
seduced by religious nut men. So the cancer will disappear in all but
RRR circles.

That answer is little to none. Improper touching was a recent problem mostly
cleared up and was centered on priests ordained in the '60's and '70's.

Nope - there were some US priests ordained in the 60's and 70's that formed the
majority of the problem. They are and have been weeded out and now the cream is
rising to the top.
Better luck next time, fish boy.

The correct analogy, David, is that you are preventing others from

Now where do you stand on that?

National Organization for Women President Kim Gandy condemned
religious and political extremists for opposing a vaccine that will
eliminate most cases of cervical cancer. "I lost my grandmother to
cervical cancer, and have two daughters who might be spared that fate
with this vaccine. Opposing an effective vaccine that would save
hundreds of thousands of women's lives with the vacuous assertion that
it would lead to promiscuity is inexcusable," Gandy said.

A new vaccine that protects women against cancer-causing strains of
the human papilloma virus (HPV) is at the center of yet another
controversy at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although it is
generally accepted that the vaccine is effective against the most
dangerous strains of HPV, which are responsible for about 70 percent
of all cases of cervical cancer, vaccine opponents claim that making
it a regular part of childrens' vaccine protocol would encourage young
women to be more sexually active. Women's health advocates are urging
that it become part of the regimen of pre-puberty vaccines, since HPV
is spread primarily through sexual contact. The FDA will be meeting in
early 2006 to make final determination on the vaccine's availability.

Next you'll decide that we should pass a law prohibiting children from
skiing. After all, it's risky and has no real measurable benefit for
the vast majority of children. You will claim that those who oppose
your ban "want our daughters to die".
You know what? I think most parents love their children, have their
best interests at heart, and are in a much better position than you to
decide what medical care they should receive.
That said, the argument that HPV vaccinations will encourage young
women to be more sexually active is about as bizarre and twisted as
the argument that because the vaccine is good it should be forced on
everyone. So I give both sides a "you're out of your mind" and "keep
your filthy hands away from my kids".

Right, it's "stupid" to give people a choice on the matter. It's not
like I'm advocating that people prevent this treatment--merely that it
should not be mandatory. If it's so great and carries few risks, why
wouldn't people take you up on the offer?
