Vegetative State Can Give Kin False Hope |
Video showing the dark-haired woman appearing to interact with her
family has been televised nationally. But a court-appointed doctor has
said the noises and facial expressions are merely reflexes.
But in Schiavo's condition, described as a persistent vegetative
state, family members can be deceived by things like eye movements and
reflexes, experts say.
"It creates this ironic combination of wakefulness without awareness,"
said Dr. James Bernat, a neurology professor at Dartmouth Medical

Vegetative State Can Give Kin False Hope
By MALCOLM RITTER, AP Science Writer
NEW YORK - In the family video played over and over on TV, Terri
Schiavo seems to gaze fondly at her mother, with the hint of a smile.
On Sunday night, as Congress took up debate on her case, her father
told reporters that she responded to his teasing by making a face at
him. "It tells us she's still with us," he said.
School.
That's because in a persistent vegetative state, the brain centers
that control wakefulness are functioning, but those that permit
conscious awareness of oneself or the environment are damaged or
destroyed.
As a result, patients close their eyes to sleep and open them when
they wake up. If a doctor brushes the eyeball with a wisp of cotton,
they may blink. If something gets caught in the throat, they will
cough. There may be limited eye movements, though patients can't
follow a person walking from one side of the room to another, for
example.
That's in contrast to a coma, in which the eyes remain closed and a
person is neither aware nor awake, or brain death, in which there is
no sign at all that the brain is functioning.
Bernat, past chairman of the American Academy of Neurology (news - web
sites)'s Ethics, Law and Humanities Committee, declined to comment
specifically on the Schiavo case. He said outward signs of persistent
vegetative state can give family members false hope.
"There's a normal tendency of family members to interpret (random)
movements as evidence of awareness," said Bernat, who recalled seeing
that happen with his own patients.
He said that when family members claim that a loved one in a
persistent vegetative state is purposefully looking at them, he asks
to accompany them to the bedside and see for himself. Sometimes, in
fact, family members really have noticed genuine signs of
consciousness and investigation shows the diagnosis was incorrect, he
said. But in his experience, Bernat said, most of the time the family
has been wrong.
Nobody can enter a patient's mind and discover what that person is
experiencing, he noted. Doctors can only say that despite what family
members might believe, "to the best of our ability we cannot convince
ourselves there is any evidence of awareness," Bernat said. Doctors
try to help the family understand how it's possible to be awake but
not aware, he said.
Patients can recover after even a year or two in a persistent
vegetative state caused by head trauma, Bernat said, although they
generally continue to be disabled. However, he said a vegetative state
that was caused by lack of blood or oxygen delivery to the brain and
has gone on more than five years is considered permanent.
Schiavo, 41, has been at the center of a long and bitter court battle
between her parents and her husband, who wants to remove her feeding
tube so she can die.
Court-appointed doctors say Schiavo is in a persistent vegetative
state, after her heart stopped beating temporarily 15 years ago,
cutting off oxygen to her brain. She did not leave any written
instructions about care, but her husband, Michael Schiavo, contends
she told him that she would not want to be kept alive artificially.
Her parents dispute that, and deny their daughter is in a vegetative
state.
Video showing the dark-haired woman appearing to interact with her
family has been televised nationally. But a court-appointed doctor has
said the noises and facial expressions are merely reflexes.
In caring for a person in a this condition, doctors are guided by what
the patient would have wanted, Bernat said. Some have indicated they
want to be treated while others have said they want to be left to die,
he said.
Usually patients can breathe without a ventilator. As in the Schiavo
case, long-term care involves a feeding tube to deliver fluids and
food to the stomach. If family members ask to stop treatment, the tube
is removed or medical teams are instructed not to treat infections,
Bernat said.

School.
The Multi-Society Task Force on Persistent Vegetative State patients made
the above determination because it was their opinion that the patient was
unable to engage in learned behavior or did not have any psychological
awareness. The problem is that they they determined this arbitrarily
without any reference to their studies. Other medical experts noted that
such patients who show purposeful movements, verbal sounds etc. are showing
evidence of psychological awareness, but it was quickly discarded by the
Task Force.
Studies show that patients in induced comas do retain a certain level of
consciousness Even if the cerebral cortex is destroyed, evidence shows that
other areas of the brain are support cognition and awareness. There is no
way to rule out that consciousness cannot be attained later because it is
not present now.
Patient's with a condition called "locked-in syndrome" are very similar to
those who are considered to be in a Persistant Vegetative State. However,
"locked-in patients" can purposely move their eyes and show that they are
aware of their environment, while they are otherwise incapable movement.

We've done all this. Stamping your little feet and
screeching like a 3-year old mongoloid won't change the
facts of this case. Yes, she's in a persistant vegetative
state. Yes, she'd never recover, even if the feeding tube
stayed. All facts and definitions are correct, and even the
US Supreme Court agrees. Now, kindly shut your facehole.

No one defined or stated "vegetative" state.
Opinion on never recovering may be true BUT she was not in a vegetative
state.
Do you always dis Mongoloids?

No, she most certainly is NOT.
If she WAS, she would have NO reactions to anything at all - and she
DID.
The fact that she is now in her NINTH straight day of inhumane TORTURE
does not make her 'vegetative'.
The poor woman IS suffering.
That fool 'lawyer' doesn't know anything.
Neither does that thing that was formerly her 'husband'.
I believe her family.
She IS in pain.
And if she was not, then why are the hospice staff giving her MORPHINE
to control it?
Morphine will also dull respirations if used in large amounts.
According to news reports, she is receiving it around the clock, yet
she is STILL alive.
WHY? Because she IS in pain, ands the morphine is ALL being used in
efforts to help her stand the agony.
If you dpon't believe it, YOU should try starving as she is, and by
the 9th straight day, be sure and let us all know how little pain you
claim you feel.

Reflexes. Her reactions have been typical of most PVS patients. She
had an EKG which was flat. When they showed her a baloon several
years ago, she appeared to follow it momentarily, but didn't have
sustained visual pursuit, which is a hallmark of being outside the
vegetative state. She had a CAT scan that showed massive damage.

There are several studies and testimonies which PROVE she was not

These studies were not admitted in court ONLY because the suite was not
about vegetative state but about the wishes of the so called husband.

Christians have so little to celebrate in their vale of tears on
earth, they pathetically seize at ANYTHING resembling happiness.

Yes, she's in a persistant vegetative state.
No, she most certainly is NOT.
If she WAS, she would have NO reactions to anything at all - and she
DID.
Either a woman is being systematically starved to death--or our system
of checks and balances is being gutted to save a vegetable.
There are several studies and testimonies which PROVE she was not
vegetative.
What studies? What testimonies?
These studies were not admitted in court ONLY because the suite was not
about vegetative state but about the wishes of the so called husband.
Then where are they? Seems like they would be here on the Inet for us
all to experience.
Sean Hannity had a friend on Friday afternoon. I was late for work
and heard only the first 10 minutes or so of his conversation with
Sean. This was an older gentleman, a pathologist with 20,000
autopsies under his belt. He and Sean have been friends for many
years.
I didn't write down his name because I saw no need to do so. I
thought he would be just another Sean clone. I like Sean and listen
every day when I am in the car...which usually amounts to several
hours a week, because of my job/driving schedule...and the fact that I
live in a God-forsaken concrete jungle rather than in a nice community
where I can live 10-minutes from my job!
Anyway...back to the story...
This pathologist, Dr. Something, for the most part contradicted
everything Sean stood for.
He had worked with many patients like Terri and addressed virtually
every issue that had been questioned, the balloon episode, her
responses to hand holding, to touching, to speaking, the "following"
of her eyes.
Regarding every instant, he said it was common behavior for a person
in a PVS. He covered every argument, even her alleged "speaking" or
"talking," The sounds, the responses, were all very common, typical
responses in a PVS patient, nothing unusual. It is our interpretation
of what we WANT to believe that causes us to see what is, in reality,
NOT there.
My mind was not made up, only to the point that none of us were there,
none of us know exactly what has happened, none of us have studied the
videos, none of us are able to make any decision other than a decision
based upon incomplete information.
Considering that this man, Sean's friend, contradicted Sean's
position, considering that this medical doctor with 30+ years of
experience working with PVS people was able to medically explain
virtually every move/response that had was claimed to prove she was
more than PVS, I was thoroughly convinced that we are throwing good
money after bad. Michael may be a piece of s**t person (and probably
is,) but how much money and time is going to be spent on this, while
ignoring the thousands of homeless who die every day in cities across
the USA while these self-righteous idiots are trying to sneak into the
hospice to give Terri water?
Why don't they go downtown and feed a homeless person?
Why don't they go to the local Shrinner's hospital and help teach
some little kid whose parents have disowned because their nose is on
the side of their face instead of in the middle?
Why don't these do-gooders go down to the abortion clinic and offer to
pay the medical bills for some teenaged girl who is about to murder
her unborn child?
We are fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have a growing
deficit, we have a divorce rate of over 50%, we have just about the
highest illegitimacy rate in the world...and congress is spending all
their time worrying about a lady in Florida who hasn't spoken in
fifteen years and steroids in baseball.
Don't you think that perhaps, we have our priorities a bit skewed?

Well...atheists do have a lower divorce rate than evangelicals who
make "vows" before God when they enter into "holy" matrimony.
I wonder why they can talk about evil democrats when they can't even
keep their marriage vows?
BTW, I think democrats are evil also...but so are republicans.

Sorry, Don- but it IS sworn testimony. I also saw the look of sheer
terror on Terri's face when they asked her if she wanted to live or

NO ONE in a vegetative state would be able to.

I don't 'buy' what most peple hand me, Don. I'm too wary of people,
based on how I've been treated in life. I keep my eyes wide open, and
I look for FACT, not fiction.
I also know what I SAW on TV. They asked Terri what HER CHOICE was.
She tried very hard to say "I WANT TO LIVE".
And FYI, Don, I DETEST soap operas, and always have.

And un-discerning American citizens (Elaine and others)
are buying it like a badly produced soap-opera.
<snicker>
and later she said "I WANT MY BIBLE." Followed by "I WANT TO GO TO WAL*MART."
and then "TIME TO RENEW MY SAG CARD"
And FYI, Don, I DETEST soap operas, and always have.

You see what you want to see, even when it contradicts fact.

Maybe according to you.

Right!!!
Yes, RIGHT.
And HER RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED.
She IS Being slowly tortured and murdered, NOW ---- into the
fourteenth day of her torture.
I sure hope the sleazeoids responsible are proud of what they've done.
They're not dead yet, either..... they could have nightmares for years
over this, and they certainly deserve it.

Yep. You're absolutely right. Her rights are being violated and HAVE
BEEN VIOLATED for the past FIFTEEN YEARS!
She IS Being slowly tortured and murdered, NOW ---- into the
fourteenth day of her torture.
So, instead of working to fix this situation you find horrendous, you
are doing what...? Sitting behind the glow of your computer sulking?
Babbling to newsgroups will get you nowhere. Try talking to someone who
can affect change...
I sure hope the sleazeoids responsible are proud of what they've done.
You mean, like the Medical Profession, Florida state courts, Federal
Appellate Courts, The 11th Circuit Court, The United States Supreme
Court, Congress, Governor Jeb Bush, and President George W. Bush?
They're not dead yet, either..... they could have nightmares for years
over this, and they certainly deserve it.
Question: Where were you in 2002? Please detail everything you have
done for Terri Schiavo in 2002. Let me know in clear, concise steps.

See...your emotions are so much "on the surface" that you can not even
"think" clearly. You are guided by your emotions, with a heavy dose
of hormones. It is so obvious.
