Does anyone have any information on these. Its a non-theistic, memetic
take on the universe. I got a few of them in emails last year, and now
somebody has collected all 23 (sounds like a set of commemorative
dinnerware) in a blog (thecantos.blogspot.com). They're apparently
more assembled than written, taken from a number of sources, but
interesting.

It takes an atheist to call something assembled "interesting". Theists do not
have the burden of proving that they are theists, neither do they cease being
theists if their statements are not understood. They do have the burden, like
everyone else, of backing up their statements with evidence, and if the
evidence is lacking, it means that the theist lacks the evidence, not that
those he is addressing lack evidence of or belief in theism. Thus atheism is
really only applicable to a theist, because only one who knows and believes the
claims of theism can tell what a-theism or non-theism is. The same could be
said of agnostics in relation to gnosis. Atheists are really disaffected
gnostics, but because they can't come up with a catchy phrase like agnosis,
( which is ridiculous ), they've thought up atheism, which sounds like a belief
but really isn't; this describes accurately what they resent about gnosis.
Briefly, they wish to be organized like a religion in order to fight religion,
but lack the vocabulary to do so. Therefore, the word "atheist" really only
describes a particular point of view of theists which indicates their ignorance
of the evidence of theism, not theists themselves.

Actually didn't mean to be flip in my last comment. I see your point,
but one could easily make a case for ALL of the "holy works" being more
assemblages than authored pieces. That certainly applies to the New
Testament and Talmud.
I was mostly curious if anyone had any idea of the source of the Cantos
materials--not the original source materials, but who had actally done
the assemblage and if they were attempting to function as a religious,
social, or philosophical orgainization.

That is exactly the case which the authors ( assemblers ) of the Cantos
materials are trying to make. They regard religious references as
sophisticated imaginations which need to be toned down. They make a cursory,
uncritical examination of the Holy Books, and then basically shoot the breeze.

Im not sure they're just shooting the breeze, Pensul. I've not
encountered the concept of the "soul" as just being a personally
generated Meme before (of course, my SO just did her Diss on memetic
theory, so I've been hip deep in that stuff for the last five years or
so). They seem to be making a point, but trying to make it up OUT of
memes. I dunno. Alyson is terrified she's stumbled across some new
memetic take that she's gonna have to incorporate into her Ph.D at the
last minute.
I get the distinct impression this is bait. That they're trying to
create a conversation that will do what they want it to do....of course
whatever that intent is is highly subject to question........
