Victor Stenger - God: The Failed Hypothesis |
I just finished listening to the Point of Inquiry Podcast of an interview
with Dr. Stenger, discussing his new book, _God: The Failed Hypothesis_.
Dr. Stenger is a slow talker, and it is hard to listen to. I had a hard
time following some of his arguments. For example, he argues that the net
energy content of the Universe is zero: for all the 'positive energy' we
see (planets, kinetic energy, etc), it is exactly balanced by 'negative
energy', such as gravity.
Has anyone read his book, and is he more clear in writing than in an
interview? Is his kung fu any good?

I read his book. It covered a lot of ground, but it was a little short
on detail. I wish he had gone into the physics a bit more. I'm not a
physicist but I would have appreciated a little more detail.
For me 'negative' energy is sort of a fuzzy notion. I think that it
derives from symmetry concepts.
Doing a quick search I found this:

I haven't dug into his book, but there is what appears to be his
summary of this basic points, at
http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/Godless/Summary.htm
Curiously, the numbering of the points is odd for some of the text..
I've had that happen in older versions of Word when pasting into
non-Word applications.
