Dear incredible moron,
Our current justification for remaining in Iraq is to stabilize
the place so that it won't degenerate into a civil war or become a
hospitable haven for terrorists. Stabilizing Iraq requires getting
rid of the sectarian violence. If you don't give a rat's ***** about
Iraqi lives, then you have absolutly no reason to support our
continued presence in Iraq.
So what do you think about the Democrats wanting a timed withdrawal?
Something many totally disagree with.
That would seem to be the best of a list of bad options. If we
withdraw from Iraq we would be in a much better situation to do
Afghanistan properly. We should have stayed focussed on alquaida and
not gotten diverted by this irrelevant war in Iraq.

Absolutely...we screwed Afghanistan in the 80's supporting its insurrection
against the Russky's and then let them to twitch in the Taliban wind. It's
deja vu all over again for the Afghans.
I have a few Afghani friends and they were all gung-ho Bush even two years
ago. You can't imagine the invectives they spit out with "Bush" at the end.
I don't know what they're saying exactly, but they assure me it's not nice.

I agree with your last statement, we should have stayed focussed on Bin
Laden. Then again, I nor anyone else for that matter, is in any position to
know all the reasons..if they were right or wrong. We only know what we
hear on the television and read in the papers. So all we can basically do
is "hope", that our government is making the right decisions. I totally
disagree with a timed withdrawal. I agree with us getting out, but I don't
agree with a set date. It gives the terrorist a momentum shift, and not in
our favor.

that's not Bush's fault.
The Iraq war, that I do agree..Bush messed things up.
I don't see Democrats coming up with any plans, not any plans that would
help. Their plan to have a withdrawal by a certain date gives the terrorist
organizations a hands down victory and does nothing more than send the
message that they can win by just wearing down the American's.

Which would have expanded to the entire country under Gore's
"leadership".
By comparison, Clinton was a
team player who knew how to establish working relationships with
moderates in Congress and leaders around the world.
We're talking about Gore, the self-righteous blowhard who thinks the
answer to pollution is to cut industrial growth to zero.
When did Al Gore say that?
In his presentation to Congress. He wants to freeze CO2 production,
which equates to freezing economic growth. Or moving it to other
countries where they're not insane.
Well, moving it to other countries would be the Republican CEO way of
handling it but...
There's MONEY to be made in going green. New industries are always
opportunities for growth and profit. Shifting growth in electricity
production to green resources will create jobs. There was an article about
this in the local paper three weeks ago; it's creating GOOD JOBS for people
locally. You got a problem with that? It's creating new small businesses.
You got a problem with that? We might choose to rebuild the nuclear power
industry. We'll have to find ways to handle peak power requirements but
there will be money in that, too (I'll bet Bear Swamp involved a lot of GOOD
JOBS). If we improve our balance of trade by a) reducing oil imports and b)
by exporting products based on the technologies we develop, we'll be better
off, economically, in the long run.
Somebody is going to develop SPV and a whole host of other tech. We can do
that ourselves or we can end up importing it. The sooner we get working on
it, the better off we'll be.
If we just continue to suck up oil and coal and move on to new technology
last, we'll end up either selling our country for pennies on the dollar or
the whole world will just choke on our *****. Or both.
Bush is a fucking embarrassment and the only people that have
benefited from his leadership are the elites.
The only people who would benefit from Gore's insanity are the dead.

The fact remains that the market is just a mechanism for establishing a
price. It is not an engine of change.
The benefit of being a human being, as opposed to an animal, is that we can
transfer learning from generation to generation, learn from the mistakes of
others and, if we so choose, use this knowledge to ensure personal and
species survival. Or even use it to ensure that we thrive and are happy
generattions down the road.
Economically, the US can pull ahead or we can be roadkill. Pulling ahead
requires some planning and forethough.

You forget that "the market" is a collection of people who have the
incentive to be efficient in order to make a profit and to be
competitive. Governments have neither incentive.
The benefit of being a human being, as opposed to an animal, is that

That's what the people who participate in the market do. Expecting the
government to do it is a recipe for bureaucratic disaster.

There's no convincing free-marketers like Fred. They all believe that
government is evil, short-sighted and incompetent and all business is
benevolent, visionary and infallible. They would close the likes of NIH,
NASA, CDC, etc. and let the market decide which strategic avenues to take.

There's a great idea, considering that private industry has only recently
achieved what "the gummint" achieved with the very first Mercury
test-flight, Shepard's suborbital mission, in 1963 or so.
43 years of advances in miniaturization, materials science, propellant
chemistry development, aeronatical advances (much of it funded directly or
indirectly b "the gummint") and Space Ship One has tied a 1963 record.
Well done, Space Ship One! A lean and mean organization can do *anything*!
If you wait long enough.
Of course, using an exact copy of that equipment, a few weeks or months
later, John Glenn blew right through that achievement and orbited the whole
globe. A trip around the world in just a couple hours.
Do you understand anything about physics? Space Ship One has achieved its
full potential; it has hit its limit as a concept, design and
implementation. It can not achieve and would not survive an orbital flight.
If our "space program" were to be nothing but a series of 2-second
"explorations" of the 100km edge of space, Space Ship One would be a
wonderful achievement.
And would we have...
Satellite phones? Nope.
Hubble? Nope.
GPS? Nope.
Weather satellites? Nope.
Spy satellites? Nope.
LandSats and remote sensing? Nope.
Orbital nuclear detonation monitors? Nope.

You're so fucking ignorant it's amazing that you know how to work a

cost a *fraction* of what a NASA project would have cost.

There's no convincing free-marketers like Fred. They all believe

the likes of NIH, NASA, CDC, etc. and let the market decide which
strategic avenues to take.
I wouldn't close them. I'd endow the NIH and the CDC as charitable
foundations and sell NASA to the highest bidder.
There's a great idea, considering that private industry has only
recently achieved what "the gummint" achieved with the very first
Mercury test-flight, Shepard's suborbital mission, in 1963 or so.
Umm, helloooo? NASA contracted everything out to private industry.
And who was in charge? NASA. Who provided the money? "The gummint." Who
got to feel the sense of national pride? Citizens of the US. And lots of
NASA engineers and researchers made direct intellectual contributions to the
project (orbital mechanics, aerodynamic studies, etc).
Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, STS and a long list of others - all NASA "gummint"
projects, all about as successful as one could reasonably expect.
43 years of advances in miniaturization, materials science, propellant
chemistry development, aeronatical advances (much of it funded
directly or indirectly b "the gummint") and Space Ship One has tied a
1963 record.
Well done, Space Ship One! A lean and mean organization can do
*anything*! If you wait long enough.
Of course, using an exact copy of that equipment, a few weeks or
months later, John Glenn blew right through that achievement and
orbited the whole globe. A trip around the world in just a couple
hours.
Do you understand anything about physics? Space Ship One has achieved
its full potential; it has hit its limit as a concept, design and
implementation. It can not achieve and would not survive an orbital
flight. If our "space program" were to be nothing but a series of
2-second "explorations" of the 100km edge of space, Space Ship One
would be a wonderful achievement.
And would we have...
Satellite phones? Nope.
Hubble? Nope.
GPS? Nope.
Weather satellites? Nope.
Spy satellites? Nope.
LandSats and remote sensing? Nope.
Orbital nuclear detonation monitors? Nope.
You're so fucking ignorant it's amazing that you know how to work a
computer. Rutan's SS1 is *reusable*, and it's only a prototype.
So what? The STS Orbiter is reusable, too. If you think the reusability
aspect of this is the major achievement, the STS was designed in the late
'70's/early '80's and was flying by the early/mid '80's. After 20 years,
Space Ship One's reusability is not a "first."
Are you banking on my being ignorant of these things? That's a bad plan.
Space Ship One has hit its limits. It can reach 100km @ 0 km/sec, roll
over, fall back down, exert drag and then glide when it hits thick enough
air and then, after servicing, do it again, sure. Project Mercury got to
100km and then went orbital within a few months. When did Space Ship One
achieve its first orbit? It's been, what? A year? Plenty of time for that
first orbit. Did I miss it? Is it coming up? Should I put something on my
calendar?
And it
cost a *fraction* of what a NASA project would have cost.
As for the "*fraction*" of the cost, am I supposed to be impressed? Given
that they had 43 years of technological advance and all NASA's store of
knowledge behind them to draw on, I would hope it would be cheaper to
recreate Alan Shepard's flight by now.
And a 1992 Toyota Tercel is a *fraction* of the cost of a Formula 1 car.
But that's not a valid comparison, because the Tercel can do *everything*
the F1car can do, except slower. Space Ship One can *not* do *everything*
the STS can do.
Space Ship One's achievement does not even compare well with that of the
Wright brothers. They had to work out critical control problems all on
their own, no engineering or aeronatical guidance from others; theirs was a
breakthrough concept. Space Ship One was able to get information about
hypersonic aerodynamic control from knowledge learned in the X-15 (1960's)
and other "gummint" projects. There was nothing Rutan didn't know about the
project in advance, except whether or not they had made a mistake. They
didn't. Good execution, Bert. But it wasn't a pioneering effort.
What a dumbass you are, DH. Get away from me.
I understand the difference between suborbital and orbital flight and the
difference in the degree of difficulty of the mission. This makes it easy
for me to see through your pitiful BS and I'm not surprised you're more than
"mildly annoyed." I expect you feel impotent. I hear that's a very bad
feeling to have.

You said you'd sell NASA to the highest bidder - to privatize it. I pointed
out that NASA has done far, far better than private industry and private
industry would not have reached the edge of space (which is all they have
done) without NASA to provide the knowledge to help them get there. No
strawmen there.
Your problem is... you're just wrong. Often and obstinately.
