Virginia Jails And Science of Telemedicine

.... a surgeon directs the liver transplant for a prisoner
entirely via computer and robotic technology. The
operation is a success but the doctor never physically
touches his patient... who is in Virginia prison system.
For two months, the southwest Virginia Jail Authority
has been equipped for telemedicine. The advance is
a great benefit for all systems but especially for jails
and prisons in rural areas.
The telemedicine system allows both physicians and
psychiatrists to check on patients hundreds of miles
away. It also, as noted by an Associated Press story,
allows a doctor to operate “a small camera mounted
on the television monitor and zoom in on a patient to
look for signs telling whether a prescribed medication
is working.”
Technology, including medical technology, is not only
improves the quality of life, it's also cheaper than more
primitive methods. After an initial outlay of funds,
about $10,000, the telemedicine system pays for itself.
Other, sophisticated medical systems are being used
in hospital and clinics in the commonwealth but using
such high-tech methods in prisons put Virginia on the
cutting edge of medicine and penology.
