Gubernatorial Candidate Slams Atheists
by Bart Meltzer
Ron Sims, running for governor under the Democratic party (Washington),
made a statement expressing a high degree of bigotry against Atheists.
Sims appeared opposite of Dino Rossi (Republican candidate) in a debate
hosted by KING5 and the Seattle Times. The debate aired on Northwest
Cable News NWCN Wednesday night.
During the debate, the candidates were asked questions by three
journalists. Some of the questions the journalists asked were submitted
via email by viewers. One viewer who submitted a question expressed
their own bigotry against non-believers by first stating they felt
anyone who does not believe in a higher authority is a dangerous person,
and this scares them. Then the person asked Sims if he would appoint
these people [Atheists] to a judgeship.
Sims responded "I think it's important for a person to feel they are not
the only answer and that if they don't have to account for what they say
and what they do, those people are very dangerous. People who think they
are the beginning and end of every question and answer are very
dangerous people. Anyone who does not hold a belief in a higher
authority is a very dangerous person."
This video is archived on the NWCN web site and can be accessed by

One will have to register with the website in order to
access website content. Registration is free. The video is a two part
video. Sims statements expressing his bigotry of Atheists are in part
two about halfway through. One will need Windows Media Player to view
it.

Sims supports marriage for gay and lesbian couples, is against charter
schools, but considers anyone not holding a belief in a higher authority
criminals. This is quite a disparity for someone who appears otherwise
diverse. Sims touts his religious beliefs like it's a shield against
immorality. That's typical of the religious right.
This is the type of bigotry one is used to finding in the southeast. It
is quite unsettling to see it manifesting itself in a supposedly diverse
political party in a supposedly liberal and diverse state. If this
represents the opposite end of the spectrum from the religious right,
then the entire spectrum has moved drastically to the right.
A vote for Sims seems to me like a vote for bigotry against Atheists. It
actually seemed that Dino Rossi was more tolerant of Atheists even
though he's against marriage for gay and lesbian couples and for charter
schools, typically a trait the religious right has. Dino Rossi was not
asked the same question though so his position could not be determined.
Of course, please follow up on this with any additional info available.

On the other hand he could be referring to a higher power in the sense of
ugh...the supreme court or something (not entirely sure how it works in the
US). It's slightly ambigous to me.

Yeah, listening to the (rather muddy) audio of the actual Q&A
made it sound like he wanted to have it both ways, by wanting
a "higher authority" but at the same time saying that could be
e.g. "the community" or something else not religious.
Oddly enough, in 2001, this same Ron Sims got in hot water for issue
a memo to state employees working under him not to use 'religion-specific'
holiday greetings:

Bigoted remarks like his make him unfit for the office he is standing

There would have been an outcry if he'd said something similar about
Black people, Jews, Catholics, Gays etc.

The sad(der) part is that he *is* black. I would assume he'd understand
the dangers of making sweeping assertions about groups of people.

It's no guarantee, especially if he is strongly religious. In San
Francisco a while back the chairman of equal opportunities and
anti-discrimination said that Gays should be stoned to death because
that's what the OT said. He was a member of another minority - black,
and sued because he said it was religious discrimination. He lost.
But it showed that being a member of one minority doesn't necessarily
make you any more tolerant of other minorities.

This is the sort of mentality that would embrace Osama bin Laden because of his
religious beliefs but throw out Pat Tillman because he didn't believe in a
magical sky-pixie.

/shrug Sims is actually an ordained minister. Methodist, if I recall.
Other than this one viewpoint, however, he was my choice for Dem candidate by far. I'm
disappointed that Christine Gregoire won the primary.
