Filmmaker Moore Quotes Goss on Lack of CIA Credentials
Reuters Wed Aug 11, 2004 06:40 PM ET
By David Morgan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Congressman Porter Goss, President Bush's
nominee for CIA director, could be his own worst enemy when it comes to
making the case that he deserves to lead the U.S. intelligence agency.
"I couldn't get a job with CIA today. I am not qualified," the Florida
Republican told documentary-maker Michael Moore's production company during
the filming of the anti-Bush movie "Fahrenheit 9/11."
A day after Bush picked Goss for the top U.S. spy job, Moore on Wednesday
released an excerpt from a March 3 interview in which the 65-year-old former
House of Representatives intelligence chief recounts his lack of
qualifications for employment as a modern CIA staffer.
"I don't have the language skills. I, you know, my language skills were
romance languages and stuff. We're looking for Arabists today. I don't have
the cultural background probably," Goss is quoted in an interview
transcript.
"And I certainly don't have the technical skills, uh, as my children remind
me every day: 'Dad you got to get better on your computer.' Uh, so, the
things that you need to have, I don't have."
Goss, who served with the CIA clandestine services in Latin America and
Europe in the 1960s, was not immediately available for comment.
He appears in Moore's film, the most financially successful documentary in
history, during a segment devoted to the USA Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism
measure.
Moore told Reuters that Goss, who until Tuesday was chairman of the House of
Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, granted an
interview to two of his producers ** without first checking to see who they
worked for**. ;-))) (great, just great)
"You'd think the person who was the head of the intelligence committee would
ask a few more questions," said Moore.
"The reality is that Porter Goss was in charge of the oversight of the CIA
during a time when the CIA didn't do its job, which in part resulted in the
loss of lives of 3,000 people," he said via telephone from New York.
A White House spokesman declined to comment specifically on the Goss
interview but described the lawmaker as "the most qualified man for the
job."
Goss is expected to appear at confirmation hearings before the Senate
intelligence committee next month.

unqualified to be an operative. But the job he's getting is not an

You really have something wrong with your head. You post a quote and push a
conclusion. I reply pointing out a flaw in the relationship between the
quote and the conclusion. You reply by saying that I miss the point, and say
that I should have concluded something which, while reasonable enough, was
not the subject of the quote. When I reply that this is an unethical
debating tactic (which it is), you freak.

You slimeball moron.

The guy brings no skills to the office.

He was on the intelligence overview committee over a period of many
intelligence *****-ups - can you figure that out, *****-up?

He is a poltically oriented person, being appointed to a critical
professional position, over an agency needing reform, by a President who has
been using intelligence for political purposes.

I'm guessing you're right on this, but I don't know. Bush's track
record would indicate it. On paper, Goss is qualified. He was a field
agent for ten years (a *spy), then sat on the congressional committee
on intelligence. Perhaps he's not the best for the job, but I'm
guessing that Bush felt pressured into getting someone onto the job
before the election, someone who would pass the Democrats' scrutiny.
He might be a lot better than we would get if Bush had taken his time
on this.
As for saying that he's not qualified to be an agent based on his
statements, maybe it's more like an old cop saying that he wouldn't be
qualified to be a new recruit ("Nope, never went to college. Probably
couldn't pass the physical, even when I was young. These young fellas
are hot stuff") Maybe it's that rare commodity in a politician:
modesty. Could be why you didn't recognize it, if it is.
Perhaps if I had seen the interview I would have a clearer opinion on
him.

Bush staff outed a CIA agent over poltics, which is a criminal act

(Valerie

Plame).

Sorry, nothing really conclusive on that yet. Just an allegation.
One that was denied by the reporter who wrote the story.

*****.

Just recently, Bush uncovered a turned al qaeda agent the Pakistanis had
caught in order to get the politcal benefit of some anti-terror fanfare,
tipping the enemy as to what we know, and precluding further al qaeda
apprehensions and probably stopping the Pakis from trusting us with
sensitive information in the future.

No, it turns out that the NYT got that information from the Pakis.
You should keep up with the news if you are going to comment on it.

I don't think so, and if you knew what you were talking about you would have
posted a credible source instead of believing cover-up *****.

This is just stupid.
The man has not run anything - he has no executive experience.
The closest he comes to that is being on the House intelligence oversight

Oh come on......
It goes with the office, just like in the UK.
You ***** up or are part of a team that fucks up - you get promoted.
But the usual form is to wait a year or two beforehand.
But hey, you think you've got problems........
The new head of British Intelligence, John Scarlet, is the man who was
accused by the Hutton enquiry of allowing himself to be manipulated by
Government when he headed the Joint Intelligence Committee.
He's the man who ignored the complaints from his own experts that the
intelligence making the case for war was being overstated, and what the BBC
called being 'Sexed Up'.
Heads rolled at the BBC for making such a statement, even though the later
enquiry found the statement to be correct.
Could have, might have and possibly, became hard evidence.
However, no heads have rolled in Government. only promotions.
We were all conned.
Vote the bastards OUT.

manipulation as Dumbya hisself. This is pretty funny,,, read on

Republican told documentary-maker Michael Moore's production company

during

the filming of the anti-Bush movie "Fahrenheit 9/11."

A day after Bush picked Goss for the top U.S. spy job, Moore on Wednesday
released an excerpt from a March 3 interview in which the 65-year-old

former

House of Representatives intelligence chief recounts his lack of
qualifications for employment as a modern CIA staffer.

"I don't have the language skills. I, you know, my language skills were
romance languages and stuff. We're looking for Arabists today. I don't

have

the cultural background probably," Goss is quoted in an interview
transcript.

"And I certainly don't have the technical skills, uh, as my children

remind

me every day: 'Dad you got to get better on your computer.' Uh, so, the
things that you need to have, I don't have."

Goss, who served with the CIA clandestine services in Latin America and
Europe in the 1960s, was not immediately available for comment.

He appears in Moore's film, the most financially successful documentary in
history, during a segment devoted to the USA Patriot Act, an

anti-terrorism

measure.

Moore told Reuters that Goss, who until Tuesday was chairman of the House

of

Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, granted an
interview to two of his producers ** without first checking to see who

they

worked for**. ;-))) (great, just great)

"You'd think the person who was the head of the intelligence committee

would

ask a few more questions," said Moore.

"The reality is that Porter Goss was in charge of the oversight of the CIA
during a time when the CIA didn't do its job, which in part resulted in

the

loss of lives of 3,000 people," he said via telephone from New York.

A White House spokesman declined to comment specifically on the Goss
interview but described the lawmaker as "the most qualified man for the
job."

Goss is expected to appear at confirmation hearings before the Senate
intelligence committee next month.

At least Michael Moore makes no bones about his views, which is fair enough.
But what bothers me (as a Canadian and therefore an interested observer of
the U.S. political scene) is how many people are mistaking his entertainment
for fact. One example - Bush's quote on the golf course about terrorism and
then going back to his game. That's obviously intended to convey a message
of irresponsibility or worse. But the show of studied nonchalance during a
crisis is an old tactic of psychological warfare. Kennedy went sailing
during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Nixon disappeared from view during the
bombing of Hanoi. Other examples are Eisenhower at end of the Korean War,
Bush 1 during Gulf War 1. It's carefully crafted by advisors and says
nothing about the current President's personality.
If Moore wants to be more than an entertainer he needs to increase his
honesty level.

Dumbass,
Everybody knows Moore is way left, and a crititic of the right.
However, most of his film is fact based, and indeed makes its points via
FILMED RESPONSES that are plain for the viewer to see. There has been little
successful refutation of the points made in his film.

Interested readers can take a look at this link with its Bush bio and come
to their own conclusions about whether Moore's film is unfair in its
depiction of of Dumbya

There's been lots and I just gave one which you avoid responding too,
because you can't. That's what happens when you cross-post to a military
history newsgroup.
I'm not a Bush supporter particularly (I think Kerry would make a better
world leader) but I sure am not impressed with Michael Moore as a social
