Wanted life sentence for pot smuggleing |

Corby's 20 years start here
28 May 2005
"Not enough," said the Indonesian chief prosecutor even before Schapelle
Corby had been hauled back to Kerobokan Jail to face the first night of her
20-year sentence.
With Corby's family still railing at what had just happened, Ida Bagus
Wiswantanu calmly lodged an appeal against the leniency of the penalty
handed down to the Australian trainee beautician for smuggling 4.1
kilograms of cannabis into Bali.
"We should not tolerate people dealing with narcotics and we have to take
stern action . . . It's fair if it's a life sentence so we will definitely
appeal," Mr Wiswantanu said.
Moments earlier, Chief Judge Linton Sirait told Corby to rise from the
chair where for two hours she had sat, growing gradually more distressed,
as the judges announced which legal elements had been proven. Prosecutors
needed to establish two of them to guarantee Corby's conviction – they got
all four.
Like Corby, many of those in the court could not understand what the judges
said, but they sensed the woman in the pink pants and matching sandals
would not be coming home when her translator, Eka Sulistyowati, slipped a
comforting arm around her back.
That was enough to melt Corby's composure – the tears came and the cameras
at the 10 windows flashed.
For a moment she was crushed, and then the fight returned as she shifted
her gaze from the judges to her black-robed accusers sitting two metres to
her left. She fixed them with a glare of raw hatred, her lip curled, the
same glare they had endured months ago when they first asked the judges to
lock her up for life.
And, as then, Mr Wiswantanu looked away, refusing to meet her eye.
When Judge Sirait told her to stand and hear the verdict the composure was
back and it was the friends behind who were shaking, tissues replacing the
fans they had flapped all day.
If there had been any doubt, it was gone by then: her fate was sealed.
Everyone at Denpasar District Court knew it, and all that remained was for
Judge Sirait to say the word.
He obliged: "Bersalah". Guilty. And then the sentence: 20 years. "It is
stated that the defendant, Schapelle Leigh Corby, is proved legally and
convincingly guilty of committing a crime . . . importing group one
narcotics," the judge began. "(The court) hands down a sentence to the
defendant . . . of 20 years' imprisonment and a 100 million rupiah fine
(NZ$13,900)."
Pandemonium. Shouts of anger, tears, applause, whoops from the crowd
outside. Supporters of the anti-narcotics group Granat (Grenade) cheered
and clapped at the windows and Corby spun and stared.
And then the court saw where Corby gets her fight, as her mother, Rosleigh
Rose, let loose her fury at the bench.
"It's all wrong. You took the word of a lying customs officer," she yelled
as court officials and police rushed toward her. She was in no mood to be
silenced. "It's all lies. You judges will never sleep, never sleep.
Schapelle, you will come home," she yelled.
Schapelle's sister, Mercedes, was even angrier by the time she got out of
the court, where she read a statement, written in advance, suggesting the
family had suspected this verdict.
"I didn't know we even had a bloody trial," Mercedes shrieked, her voice
cracking. "They didn't take any of our witnesses into account."
One of Corby's lawyers, Erwin Siregar, was just as furious after he heard
the prosecutor planned to appeal. "That (20 years) is not enough? Go to
hell."
But asked later whether Corby deserved 20 years in jail, Judge Sirait said:
"Read the verdict again, it's fair."
Family friend Glen Jeffers had lost all confidence in the Indonesian courts
and called on the Indonesian president to act.
"When Indonesia was struck by a tsunami, Australia gave aid. Nine
Australians gave the ultimate, their life, when their helicopter crashed
helping Indonesians," he began. "Mr President, we have seen enough innocent
life wasted in the past years. Please, sir, let's not waste another
innocent life."
Acting consul-general Ross Tysoe said last night, after visiting Corby in
jail, that she was in a very positive mood. "That shows her strength of
character."

HA!!!!!!!!!!
For a legal system to work it needs a few things....
The assumption of innocence until proven guilty!
A solid trail of evidence!
The concept of reasonable doubt!
Judges who haven't made up their minds before the trial even begins...not
Judges who have are proud of having a record of NEVER having aquited ANYONE
in over 500 cases and want that record to continue!
The Corby case had NONE of these!! The burden of proof was not on the
prosecution, but on Schapelle to prove that she wasn't a smuggler! What is
laughingly called the Indonesian "Justice" system is about as just as
Stalinist Russia or Communist China!! That case would never have made it
into an Australian court because of the atrocious and incompetent actions of
customs and Indonesian police. Corby was sacrificed...pure and simple!!!
Strangely enough Abu Bakar Bashir....who cold bloodedly murdered over 200
people, including 88 Australians DID receive all this.....and all he got was
2 years in prison, was treated like a VIP for the entire time he was in
prison! I am biting my tongue to stop myself from advocating extreme
actions against this obscene violation of justice!

Well that's got me thinking. Where would your average Australian punter,
***** over the Corby verdict, get biological matter? You need
resources for something like that...it's not something you can pop down to
Coles to pick up! It reminds me of "Yojimbo"...if you were a terrorist who
wanted to destabilise Australia and Indonesia....wouldn't you want to take
advantage of the tension between us right now and play one side against the
other. You send some anthrax to the Indonesian embassy, knowing that it
will be automatically assumed to be from Australians and hope that it sparks
off a chain reaction! We are in "A Fistful of Dollars" territory here!

I can't imagine why you're afraid to answef the question.
The question is not relevant here in Oz.
Then you're suggesting that Oz news is either all lies or all truth?

No, here are the questions you couldn't or wouldn't answer:
Do you actually believe mainstream, corporate media's alleged news?
Or I should ask, what percentage of their spew do you believe?
Hello, Fred! I don't live in America! I don't get the same news service
as you!
Ah. You are unfamiliar with US news services then.
My news has to adhere to different laws and regulations than US
news
What laws and regulations does US news have to adhere to?
What laws and regulations does Australia news have to adhere to?
- your question does not apply here in Australia!
Ergo, you believe whatever they say?

Pretty much. I mean, I've heard of them, but I've never watched them on
the telly. I've seen a lot of flak directed at them for not covering
certain news stories, or for putting a certain spin on news stories.
What laws and regulations does US news have to adhere to?
No idea.
What laws and regulations does Australia news have to adhere to?
To qualify as a news service, the broadcaster has to adhere to
Australian broadcasting laws. That means opinions and personal views are
not allowed, unless clearly labeled as such. Furthermore, the ACCC
(Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) and the media Ombudsman
can fine broadcasters for breaking Australian laws.
Now I'm not a lawyer, so I'm only going off general knowledge here.
Ergo, you believe whatever they say?
Not at all. However, from what I understand of American news services,
our news is of a higher quality, and is more impartial.

Well if this was standard operating procedure it is
unlikely anyone would raise an eyebrow when it
happens.
There are ways of distorting the news that go beyond putting an obvious
spin on something which I think is fairly rare on most networks.
Covering a story at all is--or can be--a form of distortion. There is
the distortion of the fact that there has to be a headline or opening
story, even when there isn't really a story deserving of it. There is
the distortion of having to write a story that fits the belief systems
of the audience--usually this isn't that hard to do since the writer
usually shares that belief system.
What laws and regulations does US news have to adhere to?
No idea.
What laws and regulations does Australia news have to adhere to?
To qualify as a news service, the broadcaster has to adhere to

not allowed, unless clearly labeled as such.
What about print media?
Furthermore, the ACCC
(Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) and the media Ombudsman
can fine broadcasters for breaking Australian laws.
What kind of laws?
Now I'm not a lawyer, so I'm only going off general knowledge here.
Ergo, you believe whatever they say?

There are many good news sources, news papers and even
broadcast news. People can and do dial into the kind of news
they want. Now they are advertising news on demand--custom
made to your specifications to some degree, I suppose, available
on the net. So it is hard to generalize. Except perhaps that
broadcast news will by necessity always be the poor step child to
print news in terms of depth and detail.

Corby's 20 years start here
28 May 2005
"Not enough," said the Indonesian chief prosecutor even before Schapelle
Corby had been hauled back to Kerobokan Jail to face the first night of
her
20-year sentence.
But asked later whether Corby deserved 20 years in jail, Judge Sirait
said:
"Read the verdict again, it's fair."
I agree that the case was handled badly by the Indonesian customs and
police, but one thing that disturbs me about the defence claims - why
would anyone go to all the trouble of setting up a drug smuggling
transport system between 2 major airports, which would involve getting the
stuff past all the security at both ends, and require some airport staff
to be complicit in the whole affair, when you could just get someone to
drive it down in a car in about 7-8 hours, with very little risk?

Because it's the baggage handlers at both ends involved. The last people to
come in contact with it before it leaves and the first people to come into
contact with it when it arrives. It's been happening successfully for
years. That's one thing ignored by the court...on the same day at the same
airport, baggage handlers were involved in a huge drug smuggling
operation...but they claim there is no connection!

Ah no. However, some people consider those who mindlessly
flame to be stupid.
Bush took office because the Kingmakers chose

You are about 40 years behind the times. Presidential
contenders from both parties must now win primary
elections to become their parties presidential candidate,
unless your guy is already president as Bush 43 was.

So how did Clinton get to be president twice if "uncontrollable"
by your imagined "kingmakers"?
