Forthcoming referendums on controversial fertility treatment laws have
revealed the church's waning influence in Italy, says Barbara McMahon
Thursday May 19, 2005
"What do politicians and priests know about my ovaries? This is an
issue for scientists and for women," the Italian actress Monica
Bellucci says indignantly.
She is talking about Law 40, introduced last year, which restricts
assisted fertility treatment in Italy. Highly controversial, the law
will be the subject of referendums on June 12 and 13, when campaigners
hope to overturn some of its key points.

from the article:
"Campaigners hoping to change Law 40 are working hard to persuade people
to vote, but - as was the case in previous referendums on abortion and
divorce - the church has called for it to be boycotted."
It is interesting that the RCC calls for a boycott, not for their
members to vote against the proposed changes. That's like saying "You
don't have a right to voice your opinion, even if you agree with us."
Very telling...
