We can help Michael Schiavo!!! |
It's too bad Michael Schiavo doesn't follow this newsgroup. I just read
that he is planning to have an autopsy done on Terri after she finishes
dying, to settle any questions about how badly her brain was damaged, and
to demonstrate that there was no possibility of her recovery or of having
any cognitive function.
If Michael were a regular here, he would know that logic and objective
evidence does not convince a "true believer". It only motivates them to
come up with creative ways to explain how their beliefs can be true
despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
If you did a survey of people who insist that TS should be kept alive as
long as possible at all costs, what percentage of them do you suppose
would be a) theists, and b) creationists, compared to people who believe
that Michael should be allowed to do with her as he sees fit?
I realize that many theists believe that she should have the right to die,
but I wonder if there are *any* atheists, humanists, or free thinkers that
think Michael's decision should be overruled by her parents, the
Governor, the Congress, or the President?

I have already heard an xian talk radio host say that his gesture is
***** because Florida Law requires an autopsy in this case.

That radio talk show host would be wrong then. With such a medical history
and the conclusive outcome of pulling all live support, death would be
immanent. Autopsies would not be a requirement in this case.

I think that the courts screwed up on this one and that they should have
transferred power of attorney to the Schiavos. My reasoning is simple, and
independant of the the factaul disputes surrounding this case. Michael has
a clear conflict of interest and the Schindlers clearly do not. He
considered her dead a long time ago, and has resumed his life. I don't
blame him for doing so, but I think that his decisions have rendered him
unacceptable as a legal decision maker for TS's fate.

Terri has been -- and is -- a cash cow for her parents.
Besides all the "Donations" she took in, they sold their
list of supporters to other right-wingers, so that they
can cash in, too.

I don't see where Michael Schiavo has a conflict of interest. His only
motivation could either be money or he genuinely is fulfilling the
wishes of his wife out of compassion. I doubt it's money, as he has
numerous times been offered large sums of cash--first by the
Schindlers, and later by other people--to just walk away from his wife.
He could have done so at any time and been more than $700,000 to $10
million richer for it. Given the huge sums being offered to change his
mind, his commitment to his wife's wishes seems pretty sincere to me.
The Schindlers, on the other hand, *do* have a conflict of interest, in
that they have received hundreds of thousands of dollars from
supporters all over the country--enough to enable them to offer
$700,000 to Michael Schiavo to gve them control, for example. Of
course, as soon as Terri Schiavo dies, the media will move on, their
supporters will find another dying person to rally around, and the
money will stop rolling in. But so long as Terri is "alive," they will
continue to rake in the bucks. They recently sold a mailing list of
their supporters to some pro-life organization looking for people to
hit up for money, which seemed a pretty sleazy and underhanded thing to
do to people who genuinely supported them. The more I read about her
family the more mercenary and creepy they seem. I find it rather
ghoulish that they would want to have a little flesh and blood doll to
play with at home and pretend it's their daughter as if she can somehow
interact with them. I'm thinking Norman Bates material here.

The same is true for her parents.
We can say we have no reason to believe that they're in it for the
money, but they sure collected a lot of it! Heck, latest words says
that they're even selling the list of their supporters to other
lunatic right-wing groups, so they can cash in too!
I friend of mine's mother was amongst those calling for the
husbands execution, until I mentioned that, under his care,
she went six years without so much as a bed sore.
That impressed her. But, how could it not, considering that she
lacks the use of one arm & both legs.

The results of the autopsy would only prove to them (no matter what it
was), that it was all a communist plot.
