SNORT! Funny!
Hey, maybe I can try that on my mom-in-law at the family barbeque this
weekend. *****, I could try it on the whole clan - almost every single one
of them wears one of those puppies.
<ponder>
Naw, probably not a good idea ;)

And now for something completely different...
I know you're into the devil's *nix instead of the One True Path of
Torvalds but you wouldn't happen to know where I'd find information on how
much traffic has passed through an ethernet connection?
As in, the area I'm moving to doesn't have DSL, cable, and may be still
amazed at indoor plumbing so I'm looking at Wildblue Satellite. Only
problem being they enforce a quota. I'm going to have to pay attention to
how much I'm using the connection so I don't hit the limit.
I'm sure it's in /proc somewhere but I didn't stumble over anything that
looked immediately useful. I'm temporarily using a "personal firewall" bit
of software as the firewall machine (and everything but my desktop) are in
a closet (I was cleaning carpets). And that little program reports in MB
how much has been sent and received.
And I'm being lazy today so I haven't tried slogging through the code. I
*hate reading other people's C. Makes my eyes cross.
Just wondering if you know something off the top of your head. This week
is "take all the boxes crowding the living room to the storage" week.
About the only room in this house that has *anything in it now is the
living room. Me and the dogs are surrounded. Just have this little corner
to cower in as the boxes close in on us...

And now for something completely different...

I know you're into the devil's *nix instead of the One True Path of
Torvalds but you wouldn't happen to know where I'd find information on how
much traffic has passed through an ethernet connection?

My Linux is a little rusty (get this, I'm hacking inside MacOSX/Darwin
these days!), but you could look at "netstat -i" for interface
statistics; I think it also has a way to display octets transferred as
well as packets. I'm pretty sure there's something in /proc, too, since
everything _else_ is there, but I can't recall offhand where it might
live. You might also want to look into ipfilter/netfilter to do more
active tracking and filtering. No reason to send noise over the interface
when traffic is being metered.
In fact the problem has almost certainly been solved by someone else, so
the only problem is finding that solution.

I don't know if I could live like that. I mean, that's, like,
uncivilized. Primitive even.
Of course my Mom still uses a 28.8 modem. You may recall how far out in
the woods she lives.

And I'm being lazy today so I haven't tried slogging through the code. I
*hate reading other people's C. Makes my eyes cross.

And angry eyes are a terrible thing to see. With.

Just wondering if you know something off the top of your head. This week
is "take all the boxes crowding the living room to the storage" week.
About the only room in this house that has *anything in it now is the
living room. Me and the dogs are surrounded. Just have this little corner

Man, better you than me. If I _never_ have to move again it'll be too
soon, and unfortunately it's guaranteed, since we rent. :-( I warned Yan,
though, after she insisted on us moving ourselves last time, that _next_
time I was going to hire movers.

Chicken!

Bwaaak bak bak!

And now for something completely different...

I know you're into the devil's *nix instead of the One True Path of
Torvalds but you wouldn't happen to know where I'd find information on
how much traffic has passed through an ethernet connection?

My Linux is a little rusty (get this, I'm hacking inside MacOSX/Darwin
these days!), but you could look at "netstat -i" for interface statistics;
I think it also has a way to display octets transferred as well as
packets. I'm pretty sure there's something in /proc, too, since
everything _else_ is there, but I can't recall offhand where it might
live. You might also want to look into ipfilter/netfilter to do more
active tracking and filtering. No reason to send noise over the interface
when traffic is being metered.

I have a kluge of a Perl script (but I repeat myself) that runs ifconfig,
captures and parses the output, and gives me what I need. But it just
*bugs me to do it that way.

In fact the problem has almost certainly been solved by someone else, so
the only problem is finding that solution.

Google is not always my friend.
(And if somebody doesn't stomp all over those idiot websites that buy up
ten billion domains and "match" every fucking search string possible, I'm
going to get a sledge hammer and beat the router to death.)

As in, the area I'm moving to doesn't have DSL, cable, and may be still
amazed at indoor plumbing so I'm looking at Wildblue Satellite. Only
problem being they enforce a quota. I'm going to have to pay attention
to how much I'm using the connection so I don't hit the limit.

I don't know if I could live like that. I mean, that's, like,
uncivilized. Primitive even.

Of course my Mom still uses a 28.8 modem. You may recall how far out in
the woods she lives.

Well, remember, we were told if we allowed all the telecomm companies to
merge together into AT&TSBCBellSouthVerzionMCIWorldComPacBell, they were
going to provide us all with super-uber-spectacular-orgasm-inducing
services.
As we fall to 16th in broadband among industrialized nations, we know it
works!
By the way, my mom has been essentially told by AT&TSBCBellSouthYou'reNext
that they are *discontinuing the ISDN which was all she could get in her
area. So AT&SBCBellSouthTheEmpireStrikesBack is "partnering" with WildBlue
to cover the rural areas instead of laying any cable or adding COs or
anything silly like that (I mean, put money into communications
equipment... a telecomm company... what a thought!)
Apparently, near as I can tell, the only advantage to going with
AT&TSBCBellSouthWeJustBoughtMexico to get WildBlue instead of going with
WildBlue to get WildBlue is you get a Yahoo! portal page.
Boy, that'll sure put those silly Asians and Europeans with their 100MB
connections in their place!
I figure at the rate Congress is "reforming" the telecomm industry, we'll
all be using crank phones.

And I'm being lazy today so I haven't tried slogging through the code. I
*hate reading other people's C. Makes my eyes cross.

And angry eyes are a terrible thing to see. With.

Okay, this is how perverse my mind is. I do fine with obtuse Perl. C is
gibberish to me lately.
Go figure.
Though, on the other hand, I'm growing more and more fond of Ruby. It's
the first OOP language I've actually liked.

Just wondering if you know something off the top of your head. This week
is "take all the boxes crowding the living room to the storage" week.
About the only room in this house that has *anything in it now is the
living room. Me and the dogs are surrounded. Just have this little
corner to cower in as the boxes close in on us...

Man, better you than me. If I _never_ have to move again it'll be too
soon, and unfortunately it's guaranteed, since we rent. :-( I warned Yan,
though, after she insisted on us moving ourselves last time, that _next_
time I was going to hire movers.

I could actually afford movers, I just don't want to spend the money.
Besides, it's giving me motivation to throw things out. None of this
moving boxes that haven't been opened since the last move.
But I'm also stuck in the situation that I need everything but the bare
minimum out of the house while I'm still here. I can't leave until I get
the last odds-n-ends sold (like the fridge, washer, dryer, etc.), get some
landscaping and cleaning done, and put the place up for sale.
Oh and the half-off-the-house rain gutter that was a gift from Rita has
still not been fixed.
(But try to find a roofer around here right now. I dare you.)
