He didn't disappear at around the same time that JPII started getting

Did he finally keel over?

I haven't seen him in a while either. He comes and goes. I thought the
same of Al Klein, who reappeared suddenly for a few months, and seems to
have gone away again.

I've read pretty much everything Crowley ever published, with the

FWIW, I think John Symonds "The Great Beast" is the definitive bio.

It's definitely worthwhile. Another good one is Gerald Suster's "The
Legacy of the Beast: The Life, Work, and Influence of Aleister
Crowley".
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0877286973/qid=1112735654/sr=1-22/ref=sr_1_22/103-7493699-5423824?v=glance&s=books
The worst, without question, is Colin Wilson's "Aleister Crowley: The
Nature of the Beast", which manages to mingle fact, urban legends
about Crowley (which Wilson takes at face value), and Wilson's own
unique, err, "interpretations" of what magick involves, into a book on
the level of overall scholarship, accuracy, and readability as, say,
the works of A.E. Waite.
Hmm, BTW, in looking through Amazon.com, I see that Weiser Publishing
(which is still in business) are reissuing a collection of the entire
first volume of The Equinox in paperback in July of this year, for US
$204.75 (the Blue Equinox does not seem to be included based on the
reviews for an earlier hardcover edition).

The worst, without question, is Colin Wilson's

"Argghhhh....".
He had a chapter on Crowley in his book "The Occult," which was IMO
basically a not very well edited version of Symonds book.

about Crowley (which Wilson takes at face value), and Wilson's own
unique, err, "interpretations" of what magick involves, into a book on

the works of A.E.

I've read pretty much everything Crowley ever published, with the
exception of a few of the poetical and literary works; I'd assume from
the title that the above is either a compilation or a biography.

Biography by Lawrence Sutin.

Which book was it where Crowley suggested as an experiment,
adopting a god that one did not intellectually believe in
and worshipping it to experience the emotional state of belief?

That would be Liber CLXXV (Liber Astarte Vel Berylli). It's a fairly
short "Class B" A.'.A.'. instructional. It can probably be found
online fairly easily; there are a couple of online archives of all
eleven original volumes of The Equinox, in which it appeared.

Atlantis, *the* UK Occult bookshop ("why do you want to buy that...?")
had a complete set of originals for sale a while back. As you might
imagine, they went for a small fortune.

New York City has actually lost two of its three most prominent Occult
bookshops since the late 1980s: Samuel Weiser's (the largest, who also
ran their own publishing firm), and Magickal Childe (which had a huge
selection of Crowleyana, being affiliated with the NYC OTO Lodge); I
have a vinyl recording of Jimmy Page's original soundtrack to Kenneth
Anger's "Lucifer Rising" issued by the OTO that I purchased there back
in the day). The latter shop also had a set of The Equinox selling for
US $1000 at the time (for issues 1 through 10 at least, I don't recall
if the "Blue Equinox" was included); I have no idea what it would be
worth now on the open market, but I'm sure it would be many times
that.

Are any of Anger's films available do you know? Loved Hollywood
Babylon ("Every Man and Woman Is A Star"!) BTW. I wonder if he'd be
interested in a reissue of his early stuff?!
