WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE? THAT'S EASY .... |
Every Philosophy 101 course asked the same rhetorical questions such as
"What is the meaning of Life?" My answer has always been, "Who said that
life had to have a meaning?" This is certainly true as there is nothing
necessitating that an answer be forthcoming, ... however there is a meaning
of life and nature supplies the answer, " Reproduction of the Species." Sex
is the most powerful driving forces next to survival in all nature so
reproduction is the real meaning of life for all life forms, plants and
animals.
Another favorite philosophical question is "Which came first, the Chicken or
the Egg?" Again we only need to turn to Biology for the answer. The modern
chicken is deriver from (evolved from) the African Guinea Hen. Now species
can change or evolve rather quickly whereas sexual reproduction modes change
very slowly or not at all. The Guinea hen and chicken both reproduce using
eggs as opposed to live birth. So the answer is clearly the Egg came before
the Chicken.
Finally "If a tree fell in a forest and no one was there to hear it would
the falling make a sound?" First we must define "Sound". If we define
sound as a form of energy, which it is (remember the old Memorex Tape
commercials), then we conclude sound does not depend on the ear to be
present. If, on the other hand we limit the definition of sound to the
action of energy waves acting on the human ear then we answered our own
question when asking it (no one was there). Clearly the first answer is the
correct one.
I often thought that all Philosophy students AND teachers should be required
to take some biology and science classes.

Personally I think the meaning(s) of life is simply ones goals. What I want
to accomplish in life gives meaning.

If philosophy teachers were required to take, AND PASS, biology and
science classes, there would be no philosophy teachers.

The meaning of life is quite apparently to survive and multiply!
