What is the purpose of alt.atheism?
Alt.atheism was created in 1990 as a place to discuss atheism and
atheist topics, including:
* Whether it is reasonable to pretend to be religious in order to
avoid upsetting your family
* Prayer in schools
* Discrimination against atheists
* Sunday trading laws
* The Satanic Child Abuse myth
* Whether you should be an overt atheist or 'stay in the closet'
* How religious societies prey (sic) on new college students
* How to get rid of unwanted proselytizers
* Whether religion is a danger to society and/or the individual
* Why people become atheists
Of course, inevitably alt.atheism tends to attract evangelical
Christians looking for someone to convert. Most readers of the
newsgroup don't want to be preached to, although a few seem to derive
perverse pleasure from tearing apart particularly ill-considered or
uninformed postings.

I never attended anything like that in college, but I did have one
college friend who "found Jesus" one Sunday morning while placing his
hand on his TV screen while watching some "repent now or burn in hell"
preacher.
Eeeek! Was it Ernest Angley?!?!?! He was one scary freak in those
hideous powder-blue suits and bad toupee.
Hey, I stuck my hand up on the TV screen and nothing happened. Go figure
;)
What?! He didn't turn into a newt? :-)
No, damnit! I was having an off day <pout>

Actually, it's a place for atheists to display their ignorance. God only knows
they don't know what they're talking about.

Well, if you're talking ignorance, that explains why I see your name
all over the place. And if I take you at your word and "God only

believe every word we say.
Can you please think for 1 second before you post. Geez-Louise you're

What's *hilarious* about the Duck's opening waffle ('atheists don't know
what they're talking about'...) is that he and his ilk get their clueless
asses whipped on scriptural issues *every single time they engage in a
debate*: the one thing you can say about western atheists is that they've
sure as hell taken the time to get to know what it is that they reject!

In certain cases, I guess it could be the "other way around".
When someone *really* studies the scriptures, it could be that is the
primary driving force towards the path to the realisation that they

Oh, you must! Zim is an incompetent alien invader, trying to soften up
the Earth in preparation for invasion from his civilization. What he
doesn't realize is that he was sent to Earth to get him out of the way by
the leaders of his planet, who have no interest in Earth at all. He is
"assisted" by a defective robot named "Gir". (The quote is from Gir, in
one of his rare moments when he is actually working properly, reciting the
mission). The show is still on, Nick-at-Nite I believe, though no new
episodes are being made. The network execs decided, appropriately, that
the show was too "dark" for the target audience. My kids love it, of
course. We are into "dark" in my house. I expect that you would
like it, too.

on 17 Nov 2005 in alt.atheism, dear sweet Machque (machque@mail.com) made
the light shine upon us with this:
What is the purpose of alt.atheism?
Alt.atheism was created in 1990 as a place to discuss atheism and
atheist topics, including:
* Whether it is reasonable to pretend to be religious in order to
avoid upsetting your family
* Prayer in schools
* Discrimination against atheists
* Sunday trading laws
* The Satanic Child Abuse myth
* Whether you should be an overt atheist or 'stay in the closet'
* How religious societies prey (sic) on new college students
* How to get rid of unwanted proselytizers
* Whether religion is a danger to society and/or the individual
* Why people become atheists
And you're here to enforce it, right? Good luck.
Of course, inevitably alt.atheism tends to attract evangelical
Christians looking for someone to convert. Most readers of the
newsgroup don't want to be preached to, although a few seem to derive
perverse pleasure from tearing apart particularly ill-considered or
uninformed postings.
There's something wrong with practicing for the day you get bombarded with
JWs at the door?
