What is the purpose of alt.atheism?
Alt.atheism was created in 1990 as a place to discuss atheism and
atheist topics, including:
* Whether it is reasonable to pretend to be religious in order to
avoid upsetting your family
* Prayer in schools
* Discrimination against atheists
* Sunday trading laws
* The Satanic Child Abuse myth
* Whether you should be an overt atheist or 'stay in the closet'
* How religious societies prey (sic) on new college students
* How to get rid of unwanted proselytizers
* Whether religion is a danger to society and/or the individual
* Why people become atheists
Of course, inevitably alt.atheism tends to attract evangelical
Christians looking for someone to convert. Most readers of the
newsgroup don't want to be preached to, although a few seem to derive
perverse pleasure from tearing apart particularly ill-considered or
uninformed postings.

Guilty as charged, except I'd hesitate to use the word 'perverse'. The
pleasure is derived from accomplishing something I think needs to be
done. If we all killfied them and ignored them, they'd go on thinking
their views were beyond question, when in fact, their views are beyond
reason.

I actually gave thia a little thought.
Say he has been around for 3 years, 10 posts a day, that would be 10000
posts, all it would take was an average of 10 responses and he would
have been corrected or told he was wrong 100,000 times

atheist topics, including:
* Whether it is reasonable to pretend to be religious in order to
avoid upsetting your family
depends.
* Prayer in schools
no. just atheism.
* Discrimination against atheists
omfg! RofL! yeah... hahaha... this is a good one, machque!
* Sunday trading laws
ok, this has to do with... economy... or sumptin like that, right?
* The Satanic Child Abuse myth
what in the hell is that?
* Whether you should be an overt atheist or 'stay in the closet'
gay is ok. so atheism is ok too.
* How religious societies prey (sic) on new college students
or atheists, too...
* How to get rid of unwanted proselytizers
wow, a new word. nice one, too.
yes, we 'need' to get 'rid of them'. nevermind the hunger,
wars, killings and other 'devils works'... this is far more
important, right?
* Whether religion is a danger to society and/or the individual
yes. every religion is a 'danger to society'. and, obviously, atheism
is THE CURE! of course... what else, right?
* Why people become atheists
id go for that... JE NE SAIS QUOI... 'sense of freedom'. like,
once they put some chains on you (religion) and now you are
free (atheism). i think thats what attracts people to atheism. and
sex orgies, swinging... etc etc...
Of course, inevitably alt.atheism tends to attract evangelical
Christians looking for someone to convert. Most readers of the

everything is ok in the 'church of atheism'.

The parents/prosecutors accused the day-care operators / school personnel of
molesting their children, using "repressed memories" as "evidence" The
issue got
some play in the media. Eventually the whole notion of "repressed
memories" was
disputed, but the accused had already been convicted and had their lives
ruined.

My first week at a (UK) university - quite a few summers ago! - saw young
'evangelicals' going round the dormitory blocks in groups of two or three
and trying to get freshers -- 18-year-old kids in a strange city, knowing
nobody, and away from home for the first time -- to come to 'a meeting' to
'get to know other people' in 'a friendly atmosphere' and 'talk about issues
that affect students'. When you got to this meeting, there was coffee and
pop music and cheese straws and lots of laughing and flirting and talk of
parties and trips and friendships -- and then you were suddenly told that if
you wanted to be part of it all then you had to agree that homosexuality was
wrong and that the 'bible' was the 'word of god', and that if you didn't,
you weren't welcome and so you'd just have to just walk out of the room
while everyone else watched.
I believe such things still happen. The group was called the 'Christian
Union'.

We had the WRP; and the 'Socialist Workers Party', too.
But, as far as I know, neither of those groups ever required a person to

My first week at a (UK) university - quite a few summers ago! - saw young
'evangelicals' going round the dormitory blocks in groups of two or three
and trying to get freshers -- 18-year-old kids in a strange city, knowing
nobody, and away from home for the first time -- to come to 'a meeting' to
'get to know other people' in 'a friendly atmosphere' and 'talk about
issues that affect students'. When you got to this meeting, there was
coffee and pop music and cheese straws and lots of laughing and flirting
and talk of parties and trips and friendships -- and then you were
suddenly told that if you wanted to be part of it all then you had to
agree that homosexuality was wrong and that the 'bible' was the 'word of
god', and that if you didn't, you weren't welcome and so you'd just have
to just walk out of the room while everyone else watched.
I believe such things still happen. The group was called the 'Christian
Union'.

Sounds like the krishnas at Stonehenge. They would look for the hungry,
lonely, drug addled flotsam around the festival. Then feed them and suck
them in. At the end of the month in '84 I saw the bus pull out with quite a
few people i had got to know at their tent that had just turned up there for
food, music or company. They had the best free food on the site! You had to
cope with a whole lot of indoctrination to get it though.. a huge bowl of
salad, veggie burgers and chai. But a krishna on each elbow smiling and
extoling the virtues of chanting.
Also, i think this was covered in the recent scientology episode of
South Park (Priceless!)

Alt.atheism was created in 1990 as a place to discuss atheism and
atheist topics, including:
* How religious societies prey (sic) on new college students
Haven't seen that discussed much around here. What's the story?

Sounds good so far..
and then you were suddenly told that if you wanted to be part of it all then
you had to agree that homosexuality was wrong and that the 'bible' was

Someone actually took the stage and said that to everybody?
I believe such things still happen. The group was called the 'Christian
Union'.
I never attended anything like that in college, but I did have one
college friend who "found Jesus" one Sunday morning while placing his
hand on his TV screen while watching some "repent now or burn in hell"
preacher. He pounded on my door the next day, all excited, and I let
him in, not knowing what I was in for...
He said he learned how to speak in tongues overnight, and I asked for
a demonstration. He closed his eyes, raised his hands, and stood
there, babbling some unintelligible words. When he was finished, I
asked him what it all meant, and he said he didn't know, but that he
was "talking to angels." He had a really weird smile on his face and
his eyes were glazed over. It was scary, to say the least.
The next time he came pounding on my door, I refused to answer.
"I know you're in there," he said loudly, pounding harder.
I still refused to answer the door.
"Go away," I said.
He finally went away after a few minutes, and left a Bible outside my
door. That was the last time I heard from him.
I still have the Bible he left me in a box somewhere in the attic or
in a closet. A KJV if I recall correctly...

Yup. Unless I wasn't clear in what I wrote and accidentally made it look
like he actually said 'while everyone else watches': that bit he didn't say,
but it was clearly meant to be part of the experience...

Yep! gideon bibles left in hotel rooms. You have to tear them by "parting"
the strips to make the edge ragged with fibres. It's the only way to get
them to stick....

Prayer books are the best. The good ones made with fine rice-paper.

Eeeek! Was it Ernest Angley?!?!?! He was one scary freak in those hideous
powder-blue suits and bad toupee.
Hey, I stuck my hand up on the TV screen and nothing happened. Go figure ;)

I can't remember who it was or if my friend actually mentioned a name
since it happened over 20 years ago.

Not enough static electricity buildup at the time I imagine. :)
