Object: What's The Matter With Kansas?
Yahoo message boards boards are to Usenet newsgroups as Junior High is to
College. Nevertheless, I spend a lot of time in Yahoo message boards,
keeping my finger on the pulse of the real America, or so I believe. There
actually are a lot of intelligent people on some of the boards, so you can
get into some witty repartee and it all goes by much more quickly than
newsgroups.
Anyway, so I found out about this book on one of the political Yahoo message
boards, _What's the Matter With Kansas?_, and even though I've only read as
much as they show on Amazon, I'm convinced that it contains the seed of a
reversal of fortune for the Democratic Party.
On Yahoo I saw lots of angry, angry anti-Bush folks, calling for
assassinations, "threatening" to move to Canada, talking about separating
the Blue States from the Red States, calling for a boycott of Red States,
calling for a new War Betwixt the States, and so on and so forth. And then
there was the name calling: people who voted for Bush are stupid, people in
Red States are uneducated hillbilly trailer trash, christians who are
claiming that abortion will now be banned etc. should be gassed, people who
voted for Bush should be shot, and one guy who posted a long rant saying he
was going to laugh at every soldier who was killed in Iraq among other evil
things he was going to laugh at.
That last post got 56 recommendations. Why? What good does all that rancor
and vituperation do? In the end the anti-Bush people proved to be just as
hate-filled and idolatrous as any of the hate-filled christians who have
been spewing their hostile venom for all these months leading up to the
election. And they were everything the conservatives said they were: pointy
headed, cold-hearted, elitist snobs, with no connection to regular people,
and no desire to have that connection.
And then I thought about Bill Clinton and how easily he won election and
re-election. Of course there was Ross Perot, who may or may not have
siphoned votes away from the Republican challengers. But I like to believe
that Clinton won where other Democrats have lost because he really loves The
People, no matter what their ideology. You can see it in his face, no matter
who he's talking to or talking about, he loves them for who they are, and he
loves engaging with them for what they are. That's one of the things
Democrats need to come away with in this election. You won't get anywhere by
disrespecting people, calling them names, telling them they're stupid or
evil, threatening to secede, or "threatening" to move to Canada.
You have to love people for what they are, with all their perceived faults.
That's just who they are and what they are, and you have to learn to deal
with it AS SUCH. Pragmatism trumps idealism every time, but when you pit
idealism versus idealism, the group with the most numbers wins.
To say it another way, you can be right, or you can be victorious. My
ex-wife somehow managed to be right all the time, and that's part of why we'
re now divorced. If people want to make a real difference in America, they
have to be pragmatic and learn to work with what they've got.

I just read a few paragraphs and it makes some good points. The
republicans made some of the poorest people support their views. They just
know how to sell a product to people. They put it on the radio and repeat it
100 times a day. They do this until people become zombies. Unfortunately
this type of brainwashing works on people of below average intelligence
really well. I'm not saying that all the voters in the red states are dumb,
just the ones who voted for Bush. This brainwashing works only so well and
there has to be something that really wakes people up. Back in the 30s it
was the depression. After the republican screwed it up, the nation voted for
the same Democrat four years in a row. I think we are on the verge of this
happening again. We are headed for a mild depression and those Bible
thumping conservatives in the red states will wake up and realize that the
gay marriage issue isn't going to feed them.
It would also help for some film makers to actually show how these
republicans live. People think Bush is a good ol' boy from Texas. He was
born in north east and is really an elitist. But you let those folk on the
radio tell it, he's a regular guy. They don't know he's never had to work a
day in his life. When the poor folk in the red states realize that the
republican leadership is among the biggest elitist groups ever, they will
vote differently.

The big problem the liberals have, is that the president betrayed the
country when he took us to war on a lie and lots of people then,
either because they were foolish, uneducated in the facts or immoral
supported him to be re-elected.
That's a big hurt - being betrayed that badly and a lot of people
joined into it for no apparent logical reason. Logical people try to
make sense of it, and the one conclusion they come up with that
doesn't paint half this country as war criminals is to decide they
were too stupid to understand, since they can come up with no
reasonable explaination.
No you can put down the liberals all you want, but to me this is all
very understandable. Their president is a traitor to the country and
has damaged it badly. They are extremely and justifiably suspicious
that they have had their voting rights taken away from them by corrupt
state governments. They are angry and rightfully so. Anger is the
healthiest most reasonable response to such a situation. War has been
waged on the liberals in this country by the 'conservatives' who have
been directed by the corrupt. Don't be one of the abusive who put
down anger as bad in order to make standing up for yourself wrong.
Anger is good when it's directed at the right source.

I was just watching a program talking about LBJ. He won a huge majority
of 62% of the popular vote and a landslide in the EC. Then things went bad
in Viet Nam. He didn't want to run again. It seems there is going to have to
be some disaster in Iraq or somewhere else to wake people up. I just hate

At least Johnson had the political samrts to buy off the people with Great
Society welfare while America fought America using the Vietnam war. Vietnam
was a war of America's rich against the poor. The super rich used the VC to
kill the young men who couldn't get out of it. It was a successful power
grab by the wealthy that is still continuing today. The running dogs of the
super-rich are the gun-loving rightwing cadres who eventually will be in
charge of America's Killing Fields.
