What's up with Dr Laura? |
A local (Dallas) editorial in Saturday's (8/23/03) paper begins:
"Can religion be put on like an overcoat during a spiritual cold spell,
then cast off just as casually when things get hot?
"Yes, if Laura Schlessinger is wearing the coat.
"The advice guru of the airwaves selected Judaism from some personal
psychic coat rack years ago. Since then, her conversion surfaced many
times with callers seeking counsel.
"Until last week, when she announced that she was giving up the faith, in
part because some of her Jewish callers hadn't been very nice to her.
What's up with this, is Dr Laura a backslider, or a heathen now or what?

Looks like she's about to convert to xianity, so she can appeal to a
broader base of rightwingnuts and increase her sagging ratings:
"Schlessinger began her program last Tuesday by noting that, prior to
each broadcast, she spends an hour reading faxes from fans and
listeners. 'By and large the faxes from Christians have been very
loving, very supportive,' she said. 'From my own religion, I have either
gotten nothing, which is 99% of it, or two of the nastiest letters I
have gotten in a long time. I guess that's my point - I don't get much
back. Not much warmth coming back.'"
"Schlessinger even hinted at a possible turn to Christianity - a move
that, radio insiders say, would elevate her career far beyond the 300
stations that currently syndicate her show. 'I have envied all my
Christian friends who really, universally, deeply feel loved by God,'
she said. 'They use the name Jesus when they refer to God... that was a
mystery, being connected to God.'"

Ummm....excuse me, but those giving advice are supposed to be leaders.
She's only demonstraining that she's a follower. She's only
demonstrating she's looking for a feel-good religion.
Yet another sheep...

Plus, I bet you if one of her callers told her that he or she was
abandoning religion then Dr. Liar would read the riot act to them. But
now she's dumping religion just because a few people say bad things to
her and she thinks changing religion will make her feel better. There
are a lot of things which might give one temporary bliss, like sleeping
around. But she'd be the first to berate her callers for doing such
things. I hope her cynical maneuver really backfires big time.
