The alleged "point" is to flood a newsgroup to the point it's unusable.
Back in the 80s, in the days of 1200-baud modems,
phone cradles, and bulletin boards, some crank was
playing much the same game with the local BBS systems.
He'd flood the groups with nonsense, or hack into the
host computer and bring down the entire BBS. (The
'youngsters' in alt.atheism would be flabbergasted to
discover how little security existed on such systems.)
In a pub one evening I discovered the identity of this
miscreant, when the young fool used his "gotcha"
phrase aloud. He'd just swindled ten bucks from some
sucker using a bar trick, and he crowed to his victim,
"You've just been zapped by the Zapper." (Hey, I never
said his catchphrase was clever.)
I warned him he'd should keep his voice down, because
there were plenty of people in the local area gunning
for an unknown person who used the same phrase after
he'd attacked a computer system.
Well, "the Zapper" was too deep in his cups to heed
any such warning, and he proceeded to wander through
the bar telling bad computer jokes and informing the
victims of his would-be humor that they'd been zapped
by the Zapper. I went upstairs to meet my party, and
forgot about the little idiot.
When I exited the place hours later, I saw "the
Zapper" being loaded into an ambulance, his head held
in position by a neck brace. I recognized more than a
few faces belonging to the local BBS community among
the crowd watching the scene. Nobody witnessed
anything, of course. After that, the Zapper never
zapped a BBS again. Word had it that he made a full
recovery (turns out his wounds were more emotional
than physical), but his computer was not so fortunate,
as it kept getting hacked and erased weekly.
The postscript: Years later a friend working in
Singapore sent me a newspaper clipping about a
computer hacker who'd been sentenced to three years in
prison for writing viruses. The man pictured in the
article was, so far as I could tell, the Zapper
himself.
