New Orleans Mayor Says God Mad at U.S.
By BRETT MARTEL, Associated Press Writer 51 minutes ago
Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other
storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities,
too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.
"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after
hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is
black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.
"Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But
surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of
ourselves."
Nagin also promised that New Orleans will be a "chocolate" city again. Many
of the city's black neighborhoods were heavily damaged by Katrina.
"It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New
Orleans - the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said.
"This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants
it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New
Orleans."
Nagin described an imaginary conversation with King, the late civil rights
leader.
"I said, `What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream and
make it a reality?' He said, `I don't think that we need to pay attention
any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He said,
`The thing we need to focus on as a community - black folks I'm talking
about - is ourselves.'"
Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do
our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the
face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"
The reply, Nagin said, was: "We as a people need to fix ourselves first."
Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are
"most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of many."
A day earlier, gunfire erupted at a parade to commemorate King's birthday.
Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of mostly
black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or
witnesses.

New Orleans Mayor Says God Mad at U.S.
By BRETT MARTEL, Associated Press Writer 51 minutes ago

Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and

other

storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities,
too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.

Good, I'm glad it wasn't the trade winds that move hurricanes. We already
have enough problems with trade from Europe and Africa.

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after
hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who

is

black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.

"Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But
surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of
ourselves."

Now hold on there. El Jefe, our banana republic dicator in chief, knows
we are in Iraq totally legally. Just ask him. He talks to God all the
time, and God talks back.

Nagin also promised that New Orleans will be a "chocolate" city again.

Many

of the city's black neighborhoods were heavily damaged by Katrina.

"It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New
Orleans - the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor

said.

"This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God

wants

it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New
Orleans."

It's the way God wants it. FINALLY, a Christian who does not say 'God works
in strange and mysterious ways'.

Nagin described an imaginary conversation with King, the late civil

rights

leader.

"I said, `What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream

and

make it a reality?' He said, `I don't think that we need to pay attention
any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He

said,

`The thing we need to focus on as a community - black folks I'm talking
about - is ourselves.'"

Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why

do

our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the
face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"

The reply, Nagin said, was: "We as a people need to fix ourselves first."

I guess the coupon expired and God no longer helps those who help
themselves.
Too bad.

Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are
"most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of

many."

A day earlier, gunfire erupted at a parade to commemorate King's

birthday.

Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of

mostly

black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or
witnesses.

Good, I'm glad it wasn't the trade winds that move hurricanes. We already
have enough problems with trade from Europe and Africa.

Shrub should take the trade winds to task and reduce the blowhard
excess...

But

ourselves."

Now hold on there. El Jefe, our banana republic dicator in chief, knows
we are in Iraq totally legally. Just ask him. He talks to God all the
time, and God talks back.

Indeed. Shrub is Looney Tunes.

He did, via implication.

I guess the coupon expired and God no longer helps those who help
themselves. Too bad.

So much for belief in "Jesus' Promises."
He also forgot; "Divine Plan" and "Greater Good."

Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are
"most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of

many."

A day earlier, gunfire erupted at a parade to commemorate King's

birthday.

Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of

mostly

black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or
witnesses.

Religion is a crutch for those unable to stand up and face the

Exactly.

Well, he's a politician and the black church community is a significant

At the same time, New Orleans has been--for a long time--one of the most

Sometimes, with Nagin, I just roll my eyes and move on.

Big, nasty fight going on now over shrinking the city. The latest plan
published in the paper shows a major retreat in the size of New Orleans. A
lot of people are taking the plan to mean "shrink the black population."
I don't agree with them that the *plan is racist. What racism there is to

Who? Nagin? That's just Nagin being Nagin. He is a politician after all.

I guess. It just seems like an incredibly ignorant thing to say.

Well, he's eating his words like crazy now. Rose dubbed him "Mayor
Wonka of the Chocolate City." And *everybody's mad at him.
(http://www.nola.com today--the 18th--if anybody's interested)
Though I'm still just kind of snickering. I'm rather fond of Nagin. Always
have been. He's not a *bad mayor. In fact his biggest "flaw" may be he's
not a career politician. And he frequently shoots himself in the foot
trying to play "politician." This one, though, may cost him his job.
Somebody, months ago, should've grabbed him by the collar and said "Get!
A! Speech! Writer!" His extemporaneous speechifying is much too "bull in a
china shop."

Oh he's just being a politician. Hate to say it but the church community
of the city is influential politically and he's definitely not going to
risk pissing them off.
They actually had quite a spat a year or so ago...

Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of mostly
black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or
witnesses.

Ignoring the Pat Robertsonesque Gawd-is-angry garbage, I will have to
say that he made some welcome remarks later in this piece. In
particular, I am glad to hear him speak on black-on-black crime and an
increased sense of communal responsibility for advancement. I strongly
believe that *institutionalized* racism is a thing of the past in this
country. We can thank Dr. King for his wonderful part in righting these
injustices. Individuals will always resort to putting down others over
the most trivial of differences (such as ethnicity) to assuage their own
personal failings. However, I think that we have effectively overcome
disadvantages in housing, employment, education and government access
(in some cases we have overcompensated so that it is the majority who is
occasionally disadvantaged).
