When will John Howard leave? |
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goodbyejohnhoward/
In this group members predict the date and method of departure of John
Howard from the Prime Ministership of Australia. There can also be
discussion of the reasons for any such predictions. Members are also
exoected to add to the table in the database section their own
prediction.
John Howard has been PM of Australia since 1996. In December 2004 he
will become the second longest serving PM in Australian history. When
will he leave and how? Will he retire, lose an election or be ousted
by a contender or will he be carried out in a box? Finding the answer
to this is the purpose of this group.

I am sometimes reminded of my "mature years". It seems but yesterday
when Bill Hayden (ALP) leader of that party remarked that given the
state of affairs in the parliament even A drover's dog could defeat
the liberals...
It wasn't yesterday. It was 1983....
http://www.australianpolitics.com/elections/1983/
========================================
March 5, 1983
The 1983 election brought to an end 7 years of coalition government
and ushered in the first of 5 successive election wins for the ALP.
The coalition government led by Malcolm Fraser had to contend with a
parlous economic situation with high inflation and high unemployment.
The nation had seen an increase in industrial disputation and many
rural areas were gripped by drought.
===========================================
On the day he called the election, the ALP replaced its leader, Bill
Hayden, with Bob Hawke. Moves against Hayden had begun in earnest over
the Christmas holiday period. Stoically accepting his removal, Hayden
claimed that a "drover's dog" could lead the ALP to victory.
============================================
Bob Hawke became the second longest serving Prime Minister in
history.......
There are cells in my memory banks that hold memories not found on
the Internet and not logged in archived history pages, be it those
related to censorship or otherwise.

The coalition government led by Malcolm Fraser had to contend with a
parlous economic situation with high inflation and high unemployment.
As a footnote the prime cause of the inflation and unemployment was
possibly the continued unrest by the trade union movement of the time
- spearheaded by Bob Hawke himself.
When he came to power it was Hawke (and Keating) who put into place
the policies that Malcolm Fraser had thought about but never
implemented.
Malcolm Fraser was by my own definition a "softie" and being a strong
believer in a multi-cultural society was appointed by Prime Minsiter
Hawke to an international role in that capacity. I don't recall the
details.
And this is a reminder that the policies we have regarding censorship
in the States (and the legislation) were established (in part) by ALP
adminstrations.
I recall Paul Keating being quizzed on social policy with regards to
sexual material. He came over in that brief instance as a moral
conservative.....
... and the current Liberal government endorsed the largely
meaningless "X" rating in spite of opposition from Fred Nile and Co.
Some might like to think about that.

Assassination is the worst of all idea....not just because it's morally
wrong...but because it makes a martyr out of the person killed. Killing a
politician increases the power of their ideology a thousand fold. There
have even been circumstances where people have been assassinated to
deliberately increase the power of that persons cause. The last thing I
want to see happen is have rat boy become a hero. When the gallons of *****
inevitably hit the fan and the moronic Australian public see how massive the
mistake they have made is....I want to see Howard and his brood suffer a
slow, embarrassing decline and have to live with the after math of what they
do to this country for the rest of their lives.

Well I do not think Howard will leave anytime soon, he is enjoying the
job too much and he has a lot of thing has been aching to do since
1996. Either he will leave in a coffin or retire when the mother of
all recessions occur (triggered by the bursting of the property and
household debt bubble).

10 actually...they can serve two full four year terms maximum, but may also
serve out two years of a previous term should the previous President die or
be removed from office.

Presuming a democratic election is the preferred way to choose a leader,
and further presuming they come up for reelection with reasonable
frequency, I'm not sure why a term restriction would necessarily be a Good
Thing- one imagines that an informed electorate is quite capable of booting
out the incumbent when the time is right, without any constitutional help.
Of course, we have compulsory voting and a rather different party system to
you blokes in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, so there may
be some effect I'm overlooking. (I'm given to understand that Amendment
XXII was introduced partly in fear of a personality cult moving the USA
towards a dictatorship, but traditionally Aussies have not been so
respectful of their Great Leaders that this would be likely here).
Then again, you may have been indicating that it's too bad that the
Australian electrate is so uninterested in their domestic politics, in
which case I agree.

I tink it's mazing - As Clive says - the only place any balding, past

Where else will he find a job where he can send all the goodies he wants to
