Why would he have to be tried? According to the new regulations we
can just keep him until he dies.

Have you seen this?
http://www.thenewsvault.com/cgi/news.pl?t=11
"The captive Iraqi tells his family to ‘say hello to everyone’ and his
lawyer claims that the former dictator’s human rights are being
violated in jail.
Military censors have blacked out nine of the 14 lines. But in what
remains of his letter, Saddam Hussein assures his family that my
spirit and my morale, they are high, thanks to greatness of God."
Other reports I googled up say that he's taken up gardening inside
a prison compound at the Baghdad airport, and that he has
a fondness for one particular tree that he takes care of.
What's strange to me is how little press he gets these days, given
that it was such a big deal when he was captured, and was one of
the main reasons for the war.

That would be too much like gloating.
FOX at least covered the Iraqi vote in a balanced way, which NBC's Meet
the Press certainly did not. Meet the Press interviewed John Kerry, of
all losers, and showed old footage of car bombs instead of anything
current about Iraqi polling places.
70% plus turnout. Very little violence, even in the Sunni areas. Some
estimates of 40+% even in Fallujah.

' The big television networks have been given a list of five polling
stations where they will be "allowed" to film. Close inspection of the
list shows that four of the five are in Shia Muslim areas - where the
polling will probably be high - and one in an upmarket Sunni area where
it will be moderate. Every working-class Sunni polling station will be
out of bounds to the press. I wonder if the television lads will tell us
that today when they show voters "flocking" to the polls.
In the Karada district, we found three truckloads of youths yesterday,
all brandishing Iraqi flags, all - like the unemployed who have been
sticking posters to Baghdad's walls - paid by the government to
"advertise" the election. And there was a cameraman from Iraqi state
television, which is controlled by Iyad Allawi's "interim" government.
The "real" story is outside Baghdad, in the tens of thousands of square
miles outside the government's control and outside the sight of
independent journalists, especially in the four Sunni Muslim provinces
which are the heart of Iraq's insurrection.'
Ho hum.

I doubt that he will ever come to trial
One of the following seems more likely
In twenty years or so, if he survives, some human rights group will get him
released, and spirit him away, never to be heard of again.
Or
He will succumb to some mysterious disease, like depleted uranium poisoning, and
no one will under stand why, or be able to find the half ton of depleted
uranium ammunition, stored in the cells, to either side of his.
Or
The US occupying forces will carry out the autopsy, and conclude that he died of
natural causes, the stomach ulcer and the snake venom in his system will never
be noticed
....And if he wasn't dead before the autopsy, he damn well will be afterwards.
He can never be allowed to come to trial, America has interfered too much in
that country's politics, to permit it.
