Just a pointless rant expressing extreme annoyance.
Houston is home to the largest church in the US, and when its pastor,
Joel Osteen, publishes a book (came out this week), I guess it's to be
expected he'd be interviewed on all the local prime time news
broadcasts, treated seriously and not as though he's not the front man
for a delusional cult. In case that constant exposure wasn't obnoxious
enough, all the local news broadcasts are going on and on about how the
Houston-Galveston Catholic archbishop has been elevated to Cardinal, and
how great that is, and how much good it will do Houston, and how blessed
we'll be blah blah blah, and just in case that, too, wasn't enough, the
local CBS station just aired a short report "investigating both sides"
of near death experiences.
Side 1: An NDE is how god talks to and comforts people who are dying.
Side 2: Science can't explain anything.
Needless to say, Side 2 was a severely edited interview with a scientist
who began by saying science isn't out to prove anything, and while he
was still talking, the sound cut out and the reporter's voice over said
the scientist "admitted" science couldn't explain why people like the
patient experienced god, although it was mentioned that NDEs can be
caused by a lack of oxygen. That comment was snuck in between
observations that science can't explain the spiritual component of NDEs.
On their web site, they have a poll asking "Do you believe in near death
experiences?". Not, do you think there's a rational cause for them or
are they purely religious, but do you believe they happen. The local
CBS station has been going downhill for years, but I think it's really
put itself in the toilet now. The only more obnoxious broadcast is the
local FOX network.
