They can't all be right.
And why not?
They contradict each other.
They *can* all be wrong.

~They can't all be right. They *can* all be wrong.
They're all right and they're all wrong.
Depends on who you talk to.
The people who claim "they're all right" (that is, they're all
just different ways of looking at the same God) are just trying
to please everyone, which, as we all know, is impossible. I
mean, the Christian religion says that if you worship any God
other than theirs, you're going to Hell. How can you *possibly*
say that that religion is true, and others are as well? It's
like agreeing that pi=3.14159 AND pi=3, both at the same time,
just to please everyone. In other words, you can *say* they're
both true, but you can't make them both true. It's logically
impossible.
The answer is, they're all wrong.
"Everybody's the same"
"We're all different"
"Too many cooks spoil the broth"
"Two heads are better than one"
"For want of a shoe, a kingdom was lost"
"Don't sweat the small stuff"
Contradictory statements are often both true. But if I may observe:
These are poetic "Truths", they are metaphorical. This claim that all
religions are true does not - and cannot - sit well with literalists
of any stripe. There are "Unitarian-type" believers of all major
religions. Curiously, they are not the ones starting wars, religious
or otherwise.
I suppose religion can give a path for someone who feels a powerful
"spiritual urge", whatever that is. A myth (by definition) can give
meaning and purpose to a person and a culture. But the literal form of
poetic metaphor can lead one into dangerous and wrong literal beliefs.
If "male" and "female", for instance, are asssociated in a cultural
tradition with certain images, then this can reinforce stereotypes
which imprison young folk into roles which may be inappropriate for
them, and which may be maladaptive when the larger context changes for
a culture.
Look at the mischief that the concepts "virgin" or "warrior" and their
historical and emotional and moral baggage have created for men and
women in Western culture. It seems to be those folks who see these
stories most concretely who are most determined to bully others into
behaving in a certain way.
A lone shaman may be a safe and entertaining character to have about,
but I think that traditional religions cause far more harm than good.

Logically, either one or the other of these is true. They cannot
both be fully true. If you changed the first to "Everybody's
similar," then they could both be true.
"Too many cooks spoil the broth"
"Two heads are better than one"
Likewise, these cannot both be true in the same situation, unless
"too many" designates a number greater than two.
"For want of a shoe, a kingdom was lost"
"Don't sweat the small stuff"
Again, in some situations the small stuff matters. In others it
doesn't. Contradictory statements cannot both be true.

The biggest Christian cult no longer teaches that. About 40
years
ago the second Vatican conference decided that virtuous people
who had not been brought up Catholic could go to Heaven, even
atheists. I don't know if ex Catholics are allowed in; the
relevent document is so badly written that I could not figure
it
out, but as an ex Catholic I don't like the idea of the
Catholic
Heaven anyway :)
How can you *possibly*

The answer is, they're all wrong.
However, the less superstitious versions of Bhuddism and Toaism
are compatible. Hiduism is really a collection of related
religions, some of which of compatible with them. A tiny
handful
of Christians could be included. And many sufis, shamans etc.
But most religion is incomptable with everything.
Look, I'm not saying that there's aren't religions that are
compatible. But they can't *all* be true.

If an omniscient deity actually did exist, it would know exactly what
sort of evidence would suffice to convince not only Johac, but me, and
every other atheist for that matter.
That such evidence has failed to be provided thus far leads one to the
conclusion that if there is such a being, it either doesn't care if we
atheists believe in it, or doesn't want us to do so. In the first
case, kiss the relevance of such a deity goodbye; in the second case,
toss aside omnibenevolence.

In my first ever post to alt.atheism about 6 years ago I flamed a
Christian who was very rude to some atheists. I told him that
atheists had been sent on a divine mission to destroy the dead
and hypocritical religions.
Very few Christians believe in a God who could operate like that,
but I think that the Hindu Brahman could very easily do such a
thing. Maybe I will become a temporary theist troll and promote
the idea at some point :)

Lol, but I think you mean Vishnu
Brahma = creator of the universe
Vishnu = keeper (incarnated as Krishna, among others) of the universe
Shiva = destroyer of the universe
I meant that Brahma could happily allow such a thing, which the
dour Christian God - who was really created by all those dull
theologians - could not.
But you are right about the details. I should consider becoming
an incarnation of Vishnu. Or maybe some slightly lesser God or
Goddess?

Quite true, and theists _hate_ that. Here's the rest of the argument,
in a nutshell:
Theist: But God knows that there is _no_ amount or kind of evidence
that would convince you, because you refuse to believe no matter what!
Atheist: You mean to tell me that an omnipotent god can't convince a
lowly mortal that it exists?
Theist: Of course He could, but only by violating your free will,
which God chooses not to do.
Atheist: So God couldn't, like, rearrange some stars to spell out
"John 3:16" or "Allah Rulez" from our perspective?
Theist: That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras. I mean,
you still wouldn't believe. Or it'd violate your free will. Or you
don't deserve it, hellbound dog. Oh, I have a headache and must go
now...

IMHO, the ones that teaches and practices:
Rom. 13:9 The commandments, ³Do not commit adultery,² ³Do not murder,²
³Do not steal,² ³Do not covet,² and whatever other commandment there may
be, are summed up in this one rule: ³Love your neighbor as yourself.²
Gal. 5:14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: ³Love your

THere were actually 2 commandments in which Christ said summed up the
Law and the Prophets. One was to love your neighbor as yourself. The
first and most important was that you should love the Lord your God
with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. You seem to think
because this was spoken that it did away with the Law or that there is
a contradiction. Those 2 "new" commands that Christ told (loving God
and loving neighbor) are quotes from the Old Testament.
Leviticus 19:8 is the quote about loving your neighbor and Deuteronomy
6:5 is the quote about loving God. The 10 commandments support those
2 commandments. The first 4 commandments show the best way to love
God and the last 6 show how mankind should love each other. But
remember, keeping the commandments or doing something does not merit
salvation. God wants to give you it free of charge.

The true religion hasnt been found/invented yet but we* struggle
towards it blindly.
I am quite sure gods, deamons and other such monsters are no part of
the true religion.
I have at least figured out that much.

Why would there be a right one?

Almost all religions claim their God is the
only true God. Which is the real God and
which are the phonies?
Maybe they all pray to the same God and most dont realize it
If you are talking about the nonexistent one, I agree.
Your welcome to your beliefs. Seems illogical to make such
an assumption with so little proof. :)
You mean assuming that there are existent gods? Or assuming that
"they all pray to the same" one, existent or otherwise?
Hint: You can't claim the high ground while submerged in a swamp.

The ones that claim that they are right and everyone else is
wrong are all wrong.

They can't all be right. However, they *can* all be wrong. Take it
from there.

What does "right" mean?
No religion is 100% false and none is 100% true - like all creations
of mankind they are a mixture of true and false good and evil.
Even that religion that had people sacrifice virgins probably said
many true and wise things - otherwise why would it last for centuries?
In any case, believing in gods is foolish and dangerous - I am pretty
certain of that.

I think, in this case, the one that is closest to the truth. If
there's a bearded fellow in the sky with a big hammer, the Vikings
were right, and we are wrong. If it's an elephant with four arms, the
hindus are right, and the Vikings were wrong. If it's an alien, the
Aetherians (http://www.aetherius.org/) are right, and the hindus are
wrong.
Etcetera, etcetera.

I guessed that was what was meant - but even so there are still
problems.
Religious beliefs are not simply matter of fact that are either right
or wrong - some are - but not all.
"God created the heavens and the earth" is either true or false - its
a binary thing.
"You should respect your elders" - is not a question of existence and
isnt simply true or simply false.
A great deal of what constitutes religion is what can be called value
sytems and "worldviews" which cant be assigned "true" or "false"
values - at least not without reference to cultural or social or
personal conditions.
But - yeah I think that is what he meant.
8-)
Mark.

True religion comes from an honest heart. It's in the Bible, Isaiah
29:13, NIV. "The Lord says: ‘These people come near to Me with their
mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.
Their worship of Me is made up only of rules taught by men.'"
True religion is focused on Jesus, not philosophies. It's in the
Bible, Colossians 2:8, TLB. "Don't let others spoil your faith and joy
with their philosophies, their wrong and shallow answers built on
men's thoughts and ideas, instead of on what Christ has said."
True religion bears spiritual fruit. It's in the Bible, Matthew 21:43,
NIV. "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away
from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit."
True religion is doing for others and staying true to the Lord. It's
in the Bible, James 1:27, NIV. "Religion that God our Father accepts
as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in
their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
