Object: .Which popes were laymen and not priests?
In particular, which pope was the one that died a very young man (in his
20's?) when he was in bed?
I hear he died from a stroke......(pun intended!)

There were long stretches of history where popes were not in holy orders
until they were elected. It wasn't until the 13th century, I believe, that
popes had to first be cardinals.

Even now it is not a formal requirement. Any baptized male Christian
would qualify. In practice only cardinals are considered.

But, but the priests told me that god picked the pope. Surely it's not a
political thing.

Absolutely not! One only has to look as the popes through history to
see the divine touch.

There's a reason Cardinals wear red. It's so you can't see the
bloodstains.

Guessing a bit, but this one seems to be it:
His Holiness Pope Benedict IX, 'elected' (by coin, I gather)
October 1032, aged 11, abdicated on May Day 1045.
