NEWSWEEK reports that liberals, appearing before a right-to-life rally
in Tampa, Florida on June 17, stated: “We must always remember that
all liberals begin life as a feces. A feces is a living being also
known as a liberal, who has endowed that feces with all of the rights
and government welfare programs of any other piece of liberal feces.”
Liberals repeated this error at least a dozen times, before realizing
that they had used the word “feces” when they meant to say “turd.”

WASHINGTON -- Sandy Berger, former President Clinton's national
security adviser, is under criminal investigation by the Justice
Department after highly classified terrorism documents disappeared
while he was reviewing what should be turned over to the Sept. 11
commission.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI agents
armed with warrants after the former Clinton adviser voluntarily
returned some sensitive documents to the National Archives and
admitted he also removed handwritten notes he had made while reviewing
the sensitive documents.
However, some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton
administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the
December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing, officials and
lawyers told The Associated Press.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed the
handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket and pants, and also
inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather
portfolio.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of
withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my
knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton
administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Lanny Breuer, one of Berger's attorneys, said his client has offered
to cooperate fully with the investigation but had not yet been
interviewed by the FBI or prosecutors. Berger has been told he is the
subject of the criminal investigation, Breuer said.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the
president's second term and most recently has been informally advising
Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. Clinton asked Berger
last year to review and select the administration documents that would
be turned over to the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks.
The FBI searches of Berger's home and office occurred after National
Archives employees told agents they believed they witnessed Berger
place documents in his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton
administration papers and that some documents were then noticed
missing, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some classified documents that he
found in his office and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from
the secure room, but could not locate two or three copies of the
highly classified millennium terror report.
"In the course of reviewing over several days thousands of pages of
documents on behalf of the Clinton administration in connection with
requests by the Sept. 11 commission, I inadvertently took a few
documents from the Archives," Berger said.
"When I was informed by the Archives that there were documents
missing, I immediately returned everything I had except for a few
documents that I apparently had accidentally discarded," he said.
Breuer said Berger believed he was looking at copies of the classified
documents, not originals.
There are laws strictly governing the handling of classified
information, including prohibiting unauthorized removal or release of
such information.
Government and congressional officials familiar with the
investigation, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because the
probe involves classified materials, said the investigation remains
active and no decision has been made on whether Berger should face
criminal charges.
The officials said the missing documents were highly classified, and
included critical assessments about the Clinton administration's
handling of the millennium terror threats as well as identification of
America's terror vulnerabilities at airports to sea ports.
Berger testified publicly at one of the commission's hearings about
the Clinton administration's approach to fighting terrorism, while the
former president met in private with the commission to answer
questions.
Berger himself had ordered his anti-terror czar Richard Clarke in
early 2000 to write the after-action report and has publicly spoken
about how the review brought to the forefront the realization that
al-Qaida had reached America's shores and required more attention.
The missing documents involve two or three draft versions of the
report as it was evolving and being refined by the Clinton
administration, according to officials and lawyers. The Archives,
which is the nation's repository for presidential papers, is believed
to have copies of some of the missing documents.
In the FBI search of his office, Berger also was found in possession
of a small number of classified note cards containing his handwritten
notes from the Middle East peace talks during the 1990s, but those are
not a focal point of the current criminal probe, according to
officials and lawyers.
Breuer said the Archives staff first raised concerns with Berger
during an Oct. 2 review of documents that at least one copy of the
post-millennium report he had reviewed earlier was missing. Berger was
given a second copy that day, Breuer said.
Officials familiar with the investigation said Archive staff specially
marked the documents and when the new copy and others disappeared,
Archive officials called Clinton attorney Bruce Lindsey to raise
concerns.
Berger immediately returned all the notes he had taken, and conducted
a search and located two copies of the classified documents on a messy
desk in his office, Breuer said. An Archives official came to Berger's
home to collect those documents but Berger couldn't locate the other
missing copies, the lawyer said.
Breuer said Berger was allowed to take handwritten notes but also knew
that taking his own notes out of the secure reading room was a
"technical violation of Archive procedures, but it is not all clear to
us this represents a violation of the law."
Justice officials have informed the Sept. 11 commission of the Berger
incident and the nature of the documents in case commissioners had any
concerns, officials said. The commission is expected to release its
final report on Thursday.
Berger is the second high-level Clinton-era official to face
controversy over taking classified information home.
Former CIA Director John Deutch was pardoned by President Clinton just
hours before Clinton left office in 2001 for taking home classified
information and keeping it on unsecured computers at his home during
his time at the CIA and Pentagon. Deutch was just about to enter into
a plea agreement for a misdemeanor charge of mishandling government
secrets when the pardon was granted.

followers have come forward to give testimony regarding their
experiences. Several Korean followers of Moon from the 1950's have
gone public in Japan and discussed disturbing elements of Moon's past,

Against the War and emceed the Winter Soldier Investigation (both
financed by Jane Fonda)," Stephen Sherman, who was a first lieutenant
with the U.S. Army Fifth Special
Forces Group (Airborne) in Vietnam in 1967-68, writes in today's Wall
Street Journal.
"Many veterans believe these protests led to more American deaths, and
to the enslavement of the people on whose behalf the protests were
ostensibly being undertaken. But being a take-charge kind of guy, Mr.
Kerry became a leader in the VVAW and even testified before Congress
on the findings of the Investigation, which he accepted at face value.
"In his book 'Stolen Valor,' B.G. Burkett points out that Mr. Kerry
liberally used phony veterans to testify to atrocities they could not
possibly have committed. ...
"Mr. Kerry hasn't given me any reason to trust his judgment. As
co-chairman of the Senate investigating committee, he quashed a
revealing inquiry into the POW/MIA issue, and he supports trade

rabbis to repent for betraying Christ, the Jerusalem Post reported
last week. Speaking in Arlington, VA in 2003, Moon said Hitler killed
six million Jews as a penalty for this rejection. And he's frank about
calling for democracy and the U.S. Constitution to be replaced by
religious government that he calls "Godism," calling the church-state
separation the work of Satan. "The church and the state must become
one as Cain and Abel," he said in the same sermon.

the only group qualified to receive another, no-bid grant for HIV

followers have come forward to give testimony regarding their
experiences. Several Korean followers of Moon from the 1950's have
gone public in Japan and discussed disturbing elements of Moon's past,

The traditional greeting at the Democratic National Convention is,
"Where do you teach?" On rare occasions, the greeting is modified to,
"Where does your husband teach?" or "Where does your gay lover teach?"
(Democrats could save a lot of money by holding the Democratic
National Convention and the National Education Association Convention
at the same time.)
The Democrats keep loudly proclaiming that Republicans represent only
extremely white rich people, while the Democrats represent all
Americans. (Bar bet: Among the four major candidates for president and
vice president this year, who has the smallest net worth? Answer:
George Bush.)
If the Democrats are a fair cross-section of America, then I guess we
can stop worrying about class size. As a friend of mine points out, if
the Democratic delegates represent America, then the teacher-student
ratio in this country is, at worst, one teacher for every three
students. And since the teachers unions don't include private or
parochial school teachers, we're looking at a teacher-student ratio of
about one teacher for every one student.
Democrats are representative of the nation only if the nation we're
talking about is Brazil. For Democrats, there is only the maid and
millionaires. There are no Americans in the middle. To the extent
Democrats are forced to recognize working-class white men, they call
them "fascists."
To thunderous applause here in the American Taliban, billionaire
Teresa Heinz Kerry said she looks forward to a day when "women who
have earned the right to be opinionated will be called smart and
informed -- just as men are." It's no wonder Democrats weren't
interested in liberating Afghanistan and Iraq from woman-hating
Islamicist fanatics: They think real oppression of women consists of
people calling Teresa "opinionated" right here in the USA. How did
Teresa "earn" the right to be opinionated again? By marrying inherited
wealth? She also boasted that the Heinz family charity, John Kerry,
"earned his medals the old-fashioned way." A couple of sponges on
another man's wealth might want to steer clear of using the word
"earn" so much. Democrats don't believe in capitalism and don't worry
about taxes on earned income because they can't imagine there is any
way to "earn" money other than the Teresa Heinz-John Kerry way.
Despite colossal efforts by the Democrats to fake out Americans and
pretend the Democrats are normal Americans who love their country,
every once in a while they make a mistake and give us a "tell." The
Democrats have carefully studied Americans, observed their habits and
expressions, so you would think for five days the Democrats could pull
off a passable impression.
Special-effects artists are working overtime. Gore was prohibited from
screeching about Republicans being Nazis, and Clinton was told not to
show up in a toga. Democrats unable to conceal their America-hating
pacifism were relieved of their anti-war signs and escorted to the
free-speech veal pens a few blocks from the convention center.
Convention organizers even forced the delegates to choke their way
through the Pledge of Allegiance -- something the teachers' students
are not allowed to say. The delegates play along, pretending they know
the words and making the occasional random reference to "God," trying
not to sound ironic.
But, inevitably, they stumble, dogs start growling, and you realize
these people are androids.
In a prepared speech carefully reviewed by the Democrats'
Americanization team, Jimmy Carter said: "After 9/11, America stood
proud." Proud? I believe "proud" was the last emotion most Americans
were feeling after 9/11, coming in considerably behind, for example,
"fighting mad," "incensed," "enraged," "humiliated" and "vengeful." It
didn't occur to any of the Democrats vetting Carter's speech to cut
that line? "What's the matter, Prince? Why are you growling? That's
just a moderate Democrat."
Even as Democrats ape Republicans -- producing a platform that lyingly
claims Democrats support war with Iraq, the Patriot Act and the
defense of America -- the fundamental difference between Republicans
and Democrats can't help slipping out: Democrats are not angry about
9/11. Sad, maybe -- sad that it didn't happen on Clinton's watch so
his legacy would be more than a semen stain. But they're not angry.
Indeed, the belle of the ball at the convention is noted patriot
Michael Moore, who apparently thinks Americans who voted for George
Bush deserved to be killed on 9/11. The day of the attack, Moore wrote
this on his Web page: "Many families have been devastated tonight.
This is just not right. They did not deserve to die. If someone did
this to get back at Bush, then they did so by killing thousands of
people who DID NOT VOTE for him! Boston, New York, D.C. and the
planes' destination of California -- these were places that voted
AGAINST Bush!" Perhaps Moore could provide the terrorists with a map
of the red states before the next attack.
This week, Moore was boasting about how well-received he was by the
Democrats in Boston -- evidenced by his yukking it up in a sky box
with former president Jimmy Carter. He has been hugged by DNC chairman
Terry McAuliffe and praised by impeached former president Bill
Clinton.
Moore's only concession to the Democrats' role-playing is to deny that
he is a Democrat, hoping enough Americans were taught by public school
teachers that no one will know how to look up Moore's voter
registration card. ("Democrat.")
Moore says Bush must be defeated because Bush lied about the war in
Iraq. Ninety-three percent of the delegates agree with him, saying
they oppose the war in Iraq, according to a New York Times/CBS News
poll.
But the Democrats' candidates for president and vice president both
voted for war with Iraq. Their party platform supports the war with
Iraq. (Let's just hope wherever the delegates teach, they're not
teaching logic.)
The only "issues" Democrats dare discuss publicly are the things
everyone can agree on: They are for "jobs," a good economy and the
middle class. None of their blather ever touches on any issue on which
Democrats and Republicans could possibly disagree.
The issues on which the parties differ are: pre-emptive attacks on
terror-producing nations, gay marriage, gun control, partial-birth
abortion, taxes, letting non-citizens and felons vote. But the
Democrats won't talk about those issues. This is the Democrats' week
to make-believe they are Republicans for the folks watching at home on
TV. In the lingo of the delegates, this is "story time."

Kennedy Tribute Coincides With Chappaquiddick
Anniversary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Democrats will honor Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy next week with a
tribute that falls at the same time as the 35th anniversary of
Kennedy's guilty plea for his involvement in the drowning death of
Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick.
On the second night of the convention, July 27, after Kennedy
addresses a prime-time audience, he will head to Boston's Symphony
Hall for a tribute headlined by U2's Bono, composer and former Boston
Pops conductor John Williams and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
It was on July 25, 1969, that the 37-year-old Kennedy pleaded guilty
to leaving the scene of the accident that killed Kopechne, a
28-year-old former aide to Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, Ted's older
brother.
The crash took place a week earlier when Kennedy was driving Kopechne
back from a raucous party on Chappaquiddick Island. The Massachusetts
senator drove the car off a bridge and into a pond, escaping without
serious injuries, but unable to save Kopechne.
Even though questions still remain 35 years later about the
circumstances of the crash, Kennedy survived the ordeal politically,
retaining his Senate seat and even making a run for the presidency in
1980.
"Between corruption, incompetence, fear, and blind loyalty to a
moneyed factotum, justice was shrugged off," wrote Leo Damore in his
book Senatorial Priviledge. "Reading the events surrounding that day
gives the impression that they happened in some other country where
normal U.S. laws and ethics don't apply."
In the nationally broadcast address from his father Joe's home on July
25, 1969, Kennedy denied that he was under the influence of alcohol.
He also explained his timeline of events. Kennedy's story didn't
exactly correspond with other accounts of that evening.
"I do not seek to escape responsibility for my actions by placing the
blame either on the physical and emotional trauma brought on by the
accident, or anyone else," Kennedy said after pleading guilty to
leaving the scene. "I regard as indefensible the fact that I did not
report the accident to the police immediately."
Kennedy's explanation cast a shadow over his presidential aspirations,
especially since evidence existed that suggested Kopechne could have
been saved if the incident had been reported to police.
Even in 2004, Republicans continue to hint at the events of
Chappaquiddick. Last month, Kennedy's son, Patrick, a Democrat
congressman from Rhode Island, engaged in a brief tiff with Rep. Randy
"Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.), who muttered during a House committee
meeting that "maybe we should check into Chappaquiddick."

followers have come forward to give testimony regarding their
experiences. Several Korean followers of Moon from the 1950's have
gone public in Japan and discussed disturbing elements of Moon's past,
including their allegations of Moon's sexual purification rites and
plagiarism of Moon's doctrine. There are currently hundreds of law
suits against Happy World, a Moon owned company which has been the
subject of one of the largest consumer fraud investigations in

members in the U.S. when I knew the number was closer to 3,000.

How NPR Made Me a Conservative

A few years ago, I worked for a struggling dot-com in Manhattan whose
work force was almost uniformly liberal. Given my conservative
orientation, I saw little sense in getting involved in workplace
political discussions. My silence was interpreted as acquiescence
until I could stand it no longer and fessed up. One co-worker, who had
served on the committee that hired me, felt betrayed.
"But," he stammered, remembering my resume, "You worked for NPR."
Actually, I never worked directly for NPR, but rather for a production
company whose program was carried on 100 NPR stations. It was a
distinction without a difference - I had worked in public radio.
My colleague's incredulity implied disappointment with public
broadcasting's ideological screening process: How had I gotten
through? He would have been even more surprised if he had known the
truth: I had arrived in public radio not as a conservative, but as a
liberal, if an admittedly disaffected one. By the time I was through
with public radio, I was through with liberalism, too.
I was a co-producer for one of the most unusual programs NPR ever
carried, "Bridges: A liberal/Conservative Dialogue." The premise was a
discussion between the liberal of the show's title, Larry Josephson,
and leading conservative thinkers.
Larry was a longtime public-radio host and producer. He had started
out at New York's always-loony WBAI, where he had hosted a legendary
morning program in the late '60s and early '70s. Since then, he had
moved on to more sedate terrain. When the Gingrich revolution swept
Washington, Larry conceived of "Bridges" as an answer to charges that
public broadcasting shut out conservatives. The Corporation for Public
Broadcasting approved the show and provided funding for a four-year
run.
By the time I arrived in 1997 as a co-producer in charge of writing,
research and booking guests, the program was in its third year. I had
been a liberal since college, but the performance of New York City
Mayor Rudolph Giuliani had shaken my old certainties. Crime was
dropping precipitously all around the city. The drug dealers were gone
from the street corners of my East Village neighborhood, and Grand
Calcutta was becoming Grand Central again. Watching the city change
before me, I was worried: Was I starting to like Giuliani? Would it
pass?
Besides my having a graduate degree, the impulses for my liberalism
were fairly common: anguish and guilt over the inequities of life; the
conviction that only liberals wanted to alleviate suffering (a belief
reinforced by professors, the mainstream media and most everyone I
knew in New York); and a deep suspicion of capitalism, heightened by
disgust at the behavior of so many successful people in American
culture.
I had read a couple of books by Jonathan Kozol, Savage Inequalities
and Amazing Grace, both about poor children. They were beautifully
written, with the searing passion of an Old Testament prophet. Mr.
Kozol demanded a moral accounting; he was the kind of writer who made
readers question even the smallest life choices they made. In the real
world, though, his prescriptions usually came down to more government
spending. America was still a deeply racist society, he held. Perhaps
tax dollars could redeem centuries of sin. I wasn't sure anymore.
In my previous job, at Legal Aid in East Harlem, I had seen the office
torn apart by the use of race in hiring. A cold war had broken out
between blacks and whites over the hiring of a white candidate who
happened to be significantly more qualified than a black candidate.
The office seethed with mutual recriminations, and "race matters"
consumed more time than official work.
Because everyone in the office was a committed liberal or outright
leftist, no one condemned affirmative action. Still, I felt a
simmering disgust for the entire enterprise. As with my feelings about
Giuliani, I tried to reassure myself. True, I hated muggers and
affirmative action. But I still opposed Newt Gingrich and supported
the progressive income tax. Everything would be fine.
Then came "Bridges."
Now I would have to read and hear what the conservatives were
thinking.
Sure beats Foucault
My main responsibility was to distill guests' books into a few
single-spaced pages and write interview questions for Larry that he
could accept or reject while adding his own. As part of my job, I read
omnivorously in the conservative literature - books, periodicals and
the Web sites that were coming online.
Larry had print subscriptions to just about everything, from Reason to
Crisis. The piles of conservative magazines lay around my workspace
like a stack of Hustler in Saudi Arabia, daring me to look inside.
Opening the pages of National Review or Commentary for the first time
gave a certain thrill of heresy.
It quickly became clear that my understanding of conservatism was a
cartoon. The writers took perfectly reasonable positions and argued
them with eloquence. Always, there was the sense of limits to what one
could hope for - and the warning that taking action could make things
worse instead of better. After my years in the fervent environs of the
left, the sober skepticism of the conservatives was very appealing. I
couldn't help but think that many of my fellow liberals had, like me,
assiduously avoided coming in contact with their arguments. That was
easy to do in New York City.
One of our first shows after I arrived was a history of American
conservatism with the historian George Nash. His magnum opus, The
Conservative Intellectual Movement in America Since 1945, has long
been a
reference bible on the right. The book condenses the thought of some
of the most consequential political and economic thinkers of the 20th
century - men such as Russell Kirk, Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman
and James Burnham. I had heard of very few of them. Nash traced the
intellectual fault lines that appeared on the right and that endure
today, such as, for example, the one between traditionalists and
libertarians.
As I read, I kept thinking to myself: "This sure beats Michel
Foucault."
He argues well
From Nash, it became abundantly clear that conservative thinkers were
more than equal to those on the left. I was impressed with their
emphasis on preserving Western culture and what they called the "Great
Tradition," their gloomy take on collective man and their profoundly
religious motivations for anti-communism. None of these squared with
my superficial view of the right - on culture, as prudes and scolds
who didn't really care for the arts anyway; on history, as blithely
indifferent to human suffering; and on communism, as rabid and
paranoid.
The depth and moral seriousness of the Nash book stayed with me long
after the broadcast, and I found myself taking it home to read - and
reread. I just made sure I didn't leave it on the coffee table when
friends came to visit.
Soon afterward, we scheduled a program with Robert Bork. Reading some
obscure intellectuals was one thing, but reading Slouching Towards
Gomorrah was another. This was radioactive stuff from one of the
right's Great Satans.
Nothing had prepared me for the shock of reading Bork. He identified
American cultural decline with two primary forces: radical
egalitarianism, which I had seen firsthand at Legal Aid, and radical
individualism, which was all around us.
Like many other conservatives, Bork traced the cultural crisis to the
'60s generation. He didn't just blame the '60s, though; he took apart
the foundations of the '60s ethos and held them up to withering
scrutiny. Bork spoke to a central premise that continues to animate
the left - namely, that man can be perfected into a state of harmony.
"Real human beings do not have any large unfulfilled capacity for
love," Bork wrote. "They simply do not regard men as infinitely
precious, whatever the homilist may say on Sunday; and they lack the
boundless energy and selflessness required to will themselves to
brotherhood. ... Attempts to suppress aggression entirely and to
substitute love, being unnatural, will finally erupt in greater
aggression. When utopians are frustrated in the realization of their
vision by the real nature of humans, who are then seen as perversely
evil, they can turn nasty and violent."
Maybe other liberals already knew that the soul of man was, at best,
equal parts dark and light. For me, though, coming up against this
assertion - which I instantly recognized as true - left the rest of my
political foundation as wobbly as an old porch struggling under too
much weight.
"What did you think of the book?" Larry asked me, paging through my
summary.
I wanted to say, "I can't believe how much of this I agree with."
Instead, I said, "He argues his points well."
Game's up
With each subsequent guest - Sam Tanenhaus on Whittaker Chambers,
James Q. Wilson on crime and punishment, David Horowitz on Vietnam and
the New Left - my liberalism weakened.
I also had begun listening to old tapes of "Bridges" from before my
arrival. On one, Marvin Olasky discussed poverty and welfare reform,
sounding not unlike a Jonathan Kozol who had allowed for human nature.
His emphasis on the spiritual and moral importance of work bore no
resemblance to the "Dickensian workhouses" described by angry
liberals. Unlike many welfare advocates who often seemed more
interested in discussing the selfishness of the rich, Olasky spoke of
the poor themselves, what they genuinely needed.
But the tape I played over and over - the one that pushed out the few
remaining beams in my tottering old porch - was an early program with
Shelby Steele. Steele argued forcefully for individual responsibility
and rejected black group identity. He described affirmative action as
"a fraud perpetrated on black Americans" by whites eager to assuage
their racial guilt.
Taking this as an invitation to candor, Larry told Steele that he had
been mugged twice by blacks and now walked to the other side of the
street at night when he saw black men approaching. Here, on NPR, Larry
was confessing one of the great liberal taboos: that his traumas had
scarred him in a way that affected his behavior toward blacks. Though
liberals could always rationalize black anger toward whites, no white
emotional responses other than guilt and empathy were permitted.
NPR listeners must have been stunned by Steele's response.
