This is a ten week course examining ethical considerations in
administrative politics. Required texts include "Deliver Us from Evil:
Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism," by Sean Hannity and "High
Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton," by Ann Coulter.
This class includes a $10,000 lab fee that will be deducted from programs
for the poor.
Week 1: Outing CIA operatives. We will examine first hand the ethics of
this practice, using real world examples. Students should bring the name of
one covert operative to class.
Week 2: Campaign financing. Using current members of the Republican
congress, we will demonstrate fundraising practices that are considered
unethical, including funneling illegal contributions, and kickbacks. (This
class will be held at the Mohegan Sun grand ballroom.)
Week 3: Election fraud. Looking forwards to the 2006 elections, students
will examine issues of voter suppression, electronic tampering, and other
methods of altering the vote that are considered unethical. In the interest
of fulling mapping out ethical boundaries, students will be required to
submit a report detailing all possible methods, and implementation.
Week 4: Cronyism. This week the instructor has selected a close friend and
fellow alumni as a guest lecturer.
Week 5: War profiteering. The class will examine the complex issues of
contracting in a post-war environment. Each student will be assigned a
country to invade and rebuild as an exercise.
Week 6: This week the class will break for an all expense paid trip to
Bermuda, courtesy of Halliburton and Exxon/Mobil.
Week 7: Personal investing. We will look at recent examples of Republicans
who were caught for insider trading, and discuss the intricacies of their
investment mistakes. Chief executives from fortune 500 companies will be
present at the class to advise us of the deep inner workings of their
financial picture, to better elucidate the complicated process of ethical
investing.
Week 8: Budgeting. The class will test ethical budgeting questions, such
as, are the poor overburdened with money, and how do we help the struggling
oil companies?
Week 9: Perjury and obstruction of justice. The class will examine two
contrasting cases. First we will look at how Clinton committed high crimes
and misdemeanors by lying under oath, thereby undermining the foundation of
our criminal justice system, as well as dishonoring the White House. Then,
we will look at how Lewis Libby was exonerated by special prosecutor
Fitzgerald by failing to be indicted for any underlying crimes.
Week 10: Torture. Guest lecturer Alberto Gonzalez will explain his views on
why torturing people is wrong. He will also discuss the possibility of
changing the legal definition of "people" to make the practice acceptable.
