who did you side with in the original Wicker Man? |
this mooie, while no masterpiece, was truly hair-raising.
not so much cuz of what happens to the police dude but cuz of the
mooie's unsettling ambivalence.
st. joan dies terribly in dreyer's mooie but we are totally with her.
we believe in her goodness and righteousness. even as her body is
burnt, she triumphs spiritually.
yet, in wicker man... we are partly with the police due and his
christian faith and partly with the pagan folks.
the police dude seems decent and faithful but also repressed and
priggish.
when he sings christian hymns inside the wicker man, he seems both
courgeous and cowardly.
also, let's remember that his kind--christians--had ruthlessly wiped
out pagans long ago.
the pagan folks seem skanky, childish, and barbarous but also
celebratory, happy, and open. there is something of the sunshine
hippie in them.
so, the scariest part of the movie is we don't know how to feel. we
both pray for the police dude soon to turn into ashes AND sing & sway
with the pagan folks. the movie disturbs the pagan/trascendental or
natural/moral duality within all of us.

Again, I'd like to remind you that the post of creative director for the
61st Annual Edinburgh Film Festival has recently been vacated - with
razor-sharp prose like this, if I were you I'd be sending in a resume.

Merely a dry run for the GLENDALE HEIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL, sponsored by
JEWPITER AUDIO, in which a TRIPLE BILL OF JOHN CANDY MOVIES SHOWN IN
NEGATIVE won the GRAND PRIX SPECIAL DU GREGORY.

That's interesting, because I haven't lived in Glendale Heights in at
least ten years, so at least you're in keeping with the being out of
touch theme. And can't El Bob come up with his own replies, or did you
read my post during your daily circle jerk?

I started by thinking I would side with the cop as he is the obvious
good guy in the film. After further thought I realised anyone with a
gun would have just threatened to shoot someone to get the girl back
long before. An experienced cop going to investigate a child kidnap
certainly would not get himself surrounded and caught by mainly women.
Sorry but hes gotta burn for being so dumb.

Based on reviews, I will refuse to waste my time on the new WM.
Going by the classic original: I don't side with anyone, for the
simple reason that the filmmakers show everyone "warts and all".
Howie, who at first seems merely an uptight, rigid blowhard, by the
end is seen as an intelligent and courageous - if not completely
sympathetic character. We feel Howie's own horror when he sees the
fate that the wicker man will brin g him to.
Lord Summerisle, who at first seems urbane, sophisticated, profound,
wryly humorous, and scholary, by the end is seen as a reason-denying
fanatic bent on human sacrifice. Summerisle looks like a brainless
maniac when he joins hands with his flock and the Man begins to burn.
One of the merits of the film is its almost documentary perspective
- we see a traditional Christian for what he is (according to the
screenplay), and we see Celtic pagans for what they are (according to
the screenplay). This film presented an opportunity, not to take
sides, but to appreciate the film's nearly objective (documentary)
genius.

Actually, it brings out pastoral/Luddite sensibilities of longing for a
time long ago that never was. Simply clothing a message in Pagan images
doesn't mean we identify with Paganism or other naturalistic nonsense!
