What a shame that he had to hide his non-belief (not that his beliefs should
matter) for 34 years just to do a job. Land of the free? My arse. I wonder
what the extreme right wing republican neo-facist fundies like duke will
make of all this?

All right Pete Stark!
He's my Congressman (SF Bay Area) and I've been voting for him for
decades. The Repugnuts always hangs some poor sucker out to dry to run
against him, but Pete usually gets 80% or more of the votes here..Ken

Is he an atheist or simply a "non-theist"?
Is there a difference?
It would seem to me that not believing in a god is the same as not believing
in a god.

I don't agree with it but this is what Lori Lipman Brown told me,
"Dear Mr. Kaufman,
Since the Secular Coalition for America represents the interests of
people who identify themselves with various labels (e.g. atheist,
humanist, freethinker, bright, agnostic, ignostic, naturalist, etc.),
we looked for an "umbrella" term which most Americans who don't have
a god-belief would fit under. Since our focus is representing
Americans who don't hold a god-belief in matters of separation of
church and state, we try to avoid the semantic discussions about
which label is best.
Sincerely,
Lori Lipman Brown

I don't have a problem with the term "non-theist". I am a non-theist. If
the word "atheist" is so politically charged and carries a negative
connotation, it might help our cause to start using the term "non-theist".

I think it will back fire. The religious right herders will claim that avoiding
the term atheist is proof that atheists are "on the run" and there is something
to be ashamed of, just like being called godless.
