Who's the Scientist? |
Here is a great site with quotes and drawings from seventh graders
describing what kind of people they think scientists are. Quotes and
drawings from both before AND after the kids visited Fermilab.
http://www-ed.fnal.gov/projects/scientists/index1.html
Isn't it great to see kids learning that science is well within thier
reach and that scientists aren't really that different from anyone
else? :)

I do have some doubts, as the sample might have been somewhat skewed:
No refs. to Great Thinkers such as Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and suchlike, and how *they* would make great scientists.
Hmm. Probably the group was a bit age-challenged for that...
(Just in case: :)
All in all, *Great Kids*, more of them should be allowed the same opportinity!)

Those are 7th Graders? Have they removed Art classes completely from
the US School system?

Hee...but I'm kinda thinking these are 7 year olds, not 7th Graders.
Even the writing seemed kind of young.

Those drawings are better than anything I ever drew. Total lack of
talent here...

Well, my kid's got the genes on her side, if there's any truth to that.
Both her mom and grandmother are artists (I recently sold my first piece at
Sales from the Crypt in update NY - Huzzah!), as well as two cousins (one of
which is Cathy Guisewite of "Cathy" cartoon fame) :)

No kidding. I wasn't expecting Da Vinci style figure drawings but
geeze...
I wonder if they could do the same thing with a visit to the Discovery
Inst.

As a scientist who recently retired after 40 years in the field, I find
those pictures cute and touching.
(At least they didn't draw them with horns and tails.)

Kid's Eye for the Scientist Guy!
Amazing, how Fermilab scientists all used to wear lab coats, but after the visit
from those Jr. high kids, they learned fashion sense. Now instead of shopping at
Edmund Scientific, they shop at Land's End.
Okay, I'm being silly. The pictures and essays were touching. :-) It just goes
to show you that actually meeting and talking with people helps erase
stereotypes about them. That's the *real* danger of field trips and tolerance
and multiculturalism.
