Why Are Atheist Books Best-Sellers? (Dennis Prager On Western Backlash
Against Religious Evil Alert)
Townhall.com ^ | 07/10/2007 | Dennis Prager

In just the last few months, three books attacking belief
It is not due to their eloquence, originality or persuasiveness that
these books have become best sellers. I believe other factors are at
work. And they are:
First and most significant is the amount of evil coming from within
Islam. Whether Islamists (or jihadists, Islamo-Fascists or whatever
else Muslims who slaughter innocents in the name of Islam are called)
represent a small sliver of Muslims or considerably more than that,
they have brought religious faith into terrible disrepute.
How could they not? The one recognized genocide in the world today is
being carried out by religious Muslims in Sudan; liberty is
exceedingly rare in any of the dozens of nations with Muslim
majorities; treatment of women is frequently awful; and tolerance of
people with different religious beliefs is largely nonexistent when
Muslims dominate a society.
If the same were true of vegetarians -- if mass murder and violent
intolerance were carried out by vegetarians -- there would be a
backlash against vegetarianism even among people who previously had no
strong feelings about the doctrine.
Religion's reputation is made all the worse by the lack of any
significant outcry in the Muslim world against the atrocities
committed in the name of their religion. The negative impact of this
Muslim silence, especially given the amount of Muslim rioting that
occurs when Muslims are disturbed by something, can hardly be
overstated.
If Muslims around the world -- especially in free countries --
demonstrated against Muslim terror with anything like the fervor that
Muslims demonstrate against perceived offenses against their honor,
Islam -- and by extension religion generally -- would have elicited
immense respect, despite all the evil being committed in the name of
Islam.
There are other, long-term, factors involved in the popularity of
books against religion.
The secular indoctrination of a generation that has grown into
adulthood is bearing fruit. Unless one receives a strong religious
grounding in a religious school and/or religious home, the average
young person in the Western world is immersed in a secular cocoon.
From elementary school through graduate school, only one way of
looking at the world -- the secular -- is presented. The typical
individual in the Western world receives as secular an indoctrination
as the typical European received a religious one in the middle ages. I
have taught college students and have found that their ignorance not
only of the Bible but of the most elementary religious arguments and
concepts -- such as the truism that if there is no God, morality is
subjective -- is total.
So the generation that has been secularly brainwashed is now buying
books that reconfirm that brainwash -- especially now, given the evil
coming from religious people.
At the same time, religion in the Western world has, with some notable
exceptions, provided few responses to the secular challenges. In
Western Europe and among the best educated in America, religion is
regarded as nonsense at best and toxic at worst. And the liberal wings
of Christianity and Judaism offer few or no arguments against the
dominant secularism. Indeed it is virtually impossible to distinguish
between a liberal Christian or Jew and a liberal secularist. Neither
holds any text to be divine, both get their values from their hearts
and minds, and they come to identical conclusions about virtually all
moral issues. The liberal Christian, the liberal Jew and the liberal
secularist all regard the human fetus as morally worthless; regard the
man-woman definition of marriage as a form of bigotry; and come close
to holding pacifist beliefs, to cite but a few examples.
Finally, many of the traditionally religious have gravitated away from
rational beliefs into irrational, mystical and emotional religiosity.
And on those occasions when they speak to the irreligious, they often
talk to them just as they would to fellow religionists. I have been on
national television talk shows with some of these religious spokesmen,
good people all, but I cringed at their unsophisticated responses to
the questions put to them. They would simply affirm their beliefs --
which undoubtedly sounded wonderful to their congregants, but did not
sway a single secular viewer.
The problem is far more than merely an intellectual one. Only strong
moral religion can defeat strong immoral religion. To his credit, when
I challenged the aforementioned Sam Harris by noting that religious
Jews and Christians are far more likely to confront Islamists than
secularists are, he agreed that this is indeed the case. But with
Islamic religious violence increasing, Western secularism increasing,
and liberal religion merely echoing secular values and its non-
confrontationalism, there will be fewer and fewer people capable of
confronting religious evil. And with the ascendance of religious evil,
the case for atheism will seem even more compelling.

I really fail to understand why so many "religious" people are so convinced
that people will not behave decently unless they are issued a set of
instructions and threatened with hellfire if they don't obey them. It really
is extremely childish to require some kind of imaginary friend to keep one
company and a cosmic parent to keep one in line.
My observation is that self-declared atheists are inclined to be more
ethical in their behavior than self-declared believers.
Oh, and by the way, despite the OP's desire to blame all this rejection of
the religiosity on Islam, I think that the reason atheists AND agnostics in
the US are increasingly speaking up is that they see our government
increasingly attempting to impose a specific type of Christianity on the
populace. For example, when the National Park Service is required to offer
creationist, non-scientific literature that amounts to no more than a
religious tract at their Grand Canyon bookstore, something is seriously out
of whack.

Well you do seem to be doing a good job of it, since your initial remark seemed
to indicate that it was obvious why religious people "are so convinced that
people will not behave decently unless they are issued a set of instructions and
threatened with hellfire if they don't obey them." Given your delicate use of
vocabulary, it appeared that you were calling religious people "dum-dums", too.
Now you express a contrary view, that atheists are fools. So, you are doing a
good job of convincing me that you are the fool. Or, maybe, you just were not
expressing yourself as clearly as you intended.

This might help:
Defenders of the Faith
By Slavoj Zizek (NYT)
Published: March 12, 2006
LONDON - For centuries, we have been told that without religion we are
no more than egotistic animals fighting for our share, our only
morality that of a pack of wolves; only religion, it is said, can
elevate us to a higher spiritual level. Today, when religion is
emerging as the wellspring of murderous violence around the world,
assurances that Christian or Muslim or Hindu fundamentalists are only
abusing and perverting the noble spiritual messages of their creeds
ring increasingly hollow. What about restoring the dignity of atheism,
one of Europe's greatest legacies and perhaps our only chance for peace?
More than a century ago, in ''The Brothers Karamazov'' and other works,
Dostoyevsky warned against the dangers of godless moral nihilism,
arguing in essence that if God doesn't exist, then everything is
permitted. The French philosopher André Glucksmann even applied
Dostoyevsky's critique of godless nihilism to 9/11, as the title of his
book, ''Dostoyevsky in Manhattan,'' suggests.
This argument couldn't have been more wrong: the lesson of today's
terrorism is that if God exists, then everything, including blowing up
thousands of innocent bystanders, is permitted -- at least to those who
claim to act directly on behalf of God, since, clearly, a direct link
to God justifies the violation of any merely human constraints and
considerations. In short, fundamentalists have become no different than
the ''godless'' Stalinist Communists, to whom everything was permitted
since they perceived themselves as direct instruments of their
divinity, the Historical Necessity of Progress Toward Communism.
During the Seventh Crusade, led by St. Louis, Yves le Breton reported
how he once encountered an old woman who wandered down the street with
a dish full of fire in her right hand and a bowl full of water in her
left hand. Asked why she carried the two bowls, she answered that with
the fire she would burn up Paradise until nothing remained of it, and
with the water she would put out the fires of Hell until nothing
remained of them: ''Because I want no one to do good in order to
receive the reward of Paradise, or from fear of Hell; but solely out of
love for God.'' Today, this properly Christian ethical stance survives
mostly in atheism.
Fundamentalists do what they perceive as good deeds in order to fulfill
God's will and to earn salvation; atheists do them simply because it is
the right thing to do. Is this also not our most elementary experience
of morality? When I do a good deed, I do so not with an eye toward
gaining God's favor; I do it because if I did not, I could not look at
myself in the mirror. A moral deed is by definition its own reward.
David Hume, a believer, made this point in a very poignant way, when he
wrote that the only way to show true respect for God is to act morally
while ignoring God's existence.
Two years ago, Europeans were debating whether the preamble of the
European Constitution should mention Christianity as a key component of
the European legacy. As usual, a compromise was worked out, a reference
in general terms to the ''religious inheritance'' of Europe. But where
was modern Europe's most precious legacy, that of atheism? What makes
modern Europe unique is that it is the first and only civilization in
which atheism is a fully legitimate option, not an obstacle to any
public post.
Atheism is a European legacy worth fighting for, not least because it
creates a safe public space for believers. Consider the debate that
raged in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, my home country, as the
constitutional controversy simmered: should Muslims (mostly immigrant
workers from the old Yugoslav republics) be allowed to build a mosque?
While conservatives opposed the mosque for cultural, political and even
architectural reasons, the liberal weekly journal Mladina was
consistently outspoken in its support for the mosque, in keeping with
its concern for the rights of those from other former Yugoslav
republics.
Not surprisingly, given its liberal attitudes, Mladina was also one of
the few Slovenian publications to reprint the infamous caricatures of
Muhammad. And, conversely, those who displayed the greatest
''understanding'' for the violent Muslim protests those cartoons caused
were also the ones who regularly expressed their concern for the fate
of Christianity in Europe.
These weird alliances confront Europe's Muslims with a difficult
choice: the only political force that does not reduce them to
second-class citizens and allows them the space to express their
religious identity are the ''godless'' atheist liberals, while those
closest to their religious social practice, their Christian
mirror-image, are their greatest political enemies. The paradox is that
Muslims' only real allies are not those who first published the
caricatures for shock value, but those who, in support of the ideal of
freedom of expression, reprinted them.
While a true atheist has no need to boost his own stance by provoking
believers with blasphemy, he also refuses to reduce the problem of the
Muhammad caricatures to one of respect for other's beliefs. Respect for
other's beliefs as the highest value can mean only one of two things:
either we treat the other in a patronizing way and avoid hurting him in
order not to ruin his illusions, or we adopt the relativist stance of
multiple ''regimes of truth,'' disqualifying as violent imposition any
clear insistence on truth.
What, however, about submitting Islam -- together with all other
religions -- to a respectful, but for that reason no less ruthless,
critical analysis? This, and only this, is the way to show a true
respect for Muslims: to treat them as serious adults responsible for
their beliefs.
--
Thank you and have a nice day.

Pity the cowards. The world can be a very fearful place. Better to
ascribe to ANY universal plan that purports to line it all up, and have
it all make sense--And bring a church a tidy sum while we're at it!.
It's a win-win situation. The fearful are give a security blanket and
targets for their fear and hatred, and a sense of community in their
angst. The fact that the administrators of such churches live a
comfortable life with respect and dignity and even political power--not
bad!

The most important thing for believers is faith. Faith, faith, faith.
Faith despite facts and reality and personal experience. First, have
faith. Next: dismiss all that violates your faith. Finally, avoid
anything that might violate that faith.
To read the book or the websites of the devil, right or wrong, fact or
fancy, is to make that much more vulnerable your faith. It's like
going to strip bars when you're married, sure you're not breaking your
vows, but why put your vows in harm's way?
If you are a believer you shouldn't engage in "discussions", even just
to call people morons, idiots, shitheads and other demonstrations of
your belief in Jesus. It is the slippery slope. All terrain is the
slippery slope. Avoid terrain. Avoid discussion.
Hide in the boozum of Jesus. There, you'll find no doubts. Ahh....

You really must spend some time reading a bit more. Anything that vaguely
resembles a western god is completely absent from Buddhism and some schools of
Hinduism. There is much in Plato that rejects gods as other than stage figures,
looking to forms as the only persisting immaterial things. Lucretius had no
need for a deity. Sextus Empiricus was a ture agnostic. William of Ockham's
razor did not leave room for a god despite his use of pious proclamations.
Descartes made sure he was out of France when his Meditations was published. He
did not want to be burned as a heretic. It was not all that safe for over 1,500
years to declare yourself an atheist in Europe. The Church did not take it
kindly and was very likely to engage in an "act of faith" [auto de fe] in
response. Hobbes was clearly an atheist, but that was the start of the
Enlightenment.
But I notice that you never say anything substantial, in any case. You just
abusively attack others, without ever getting specific. So unless you respond
in a more substantive manner than usual, do not expect a further reply.
