Why did Jesus Need To Leave Again? |
After the alleged resurrection of Jesus*, it seems that he didn't know
what to do with himself. Showing himself to the High priest and other
notable doubters would have doubtless won many converts. Some theists
darkly suggest that if jesus did this that the Jews would simply try to
kill him again. But why would they be any more successful a second time,
as opposed to the first time? Besides, Jesus could easily use magic
powers this time, to prevent that from happening again, since he had
already supposedly accomplished what he wanted to in the first
crucifixion.
Jesus claims as per John 14, that "I go to prepare a place for you". But
did he really need to ascend to do this. Couldn't he have phoned in a
prayer to his other third of his multiple personality Yahweh, to get the
housekeeper to have heaven ready for them. And how long does it take to
prepare a place. Even if jesus made all the beds himself he would be
done in less than 2000 years. *****, even if he build the whole hotel by
hand he'd be ready in less time. Anyway, can't god snap his proverbial
fingers or just say "Make it so" (Picard is God, right) and have it
happen?
So what could be the possible legitimate reason that Jesus had to rather
conveniently leave Earth, especially for such a long absence?
I've heard some people suggest that he wanted to give humanity more time
to repent or that he wanted to allow billions of more people to be born.
But whenever the End Times were to happen, he always could have waited
longer and let more people be born. As to the need to missionize the
world, he at least could have sped up the process by magically
transporting missionaries all around the world and used other powers to
make sure that they spread the gospel in a fraction of the time that it
has actually taken.
Thus, if there is any justification for Jesus leaving, it will have to be
a better lie than the whole missionary position thingy.
* (note to people including Michael Gray. I know that Jesus isn't real
and that there is no resurrection, ascension, etc. There's no need to
continually reiterate that in these hypothetical scenarios.)

"It is fashionable to wax apocalyptic about the
threat to humanity posed by the AIDS virus, 'mad cow'
disease, and many others, but I think a case can be
made that faith is one of the world's great evils,
comparable to the smallpox virus but harder to
eradicate." -- Richard Dawkins

Good point. Even if he allowed himself to die a second or third or n th time
it would start to gather crowds and make a few converts.
It's hard to argue with success.
To the vast majority, if not all, Jews the idea of a god becoming a man was
anathema but this might have convinced then otherwise.
As a college prof used to say when somebody came up with a really good idea,
"You know what's wrong with that idea?" pause while the newbie got worried
and the others smiled, "I didn't think of it."
