Ones real name is not necessarily the name you are given by your parents.
Rather, God has named every single person in this world. There are many
instances where the birth name has been changed. Abram to Abraham, Sarai to
Sarah, Jacob to Israel, Simon to Cephas.
I believe that God has a name for each and every individual, a name that is
for eternity. My earthly name, though I associate with it now, may not be
the name God has set aside for me. "And there shall be no fathers or
mothers or sisters or brothers, for those who leave their families for the
sake of our heavenly father will recieve one thousand fold in the world to
come." (paraphrased so it isn't word for word and is blending a few
verses). The idea is that when we die in this world, I am no longer
associated with my earthly father, but with my Heavenly Father, who has a
name for me. In prayer and vision, it is often likely that God reveals that
name to the person and that name is to guide that person closer to God. If
God reveals that I am no longer Robert, but that I shall be called William
(for an example), that doesn't mean I should legally change my name to
William, but that in the name 'William', my power and proximity to God is
drawning closer.
That being said, though Karol Joseph Wojtyla changed took on the ceremonial
name, John Paul II, that doesn't mean he is hiding behind a false name, but
shining to the world who God has chosen him to be, Pope John Paul II, the
steward of Christ on earth, bishop of Rome, and servant of God.
It is in no way sinful and in no way was John Paul II hiding behind his 'new
name'. People knew he was originally Karol Joseph Wojtyla. It wasn't top
secret information.

honorific name, or dresses 'funny', or wears a skullcap, or carries a
crook. One might argue that the religion *itself* is harmful--but these

Apparently, the person getting the charge chooses the name for
himself/herself. Therefore, upong becoming Pope, Joseph Ratzinger chose
"Benedict XVI" as his name. I assume nuns and other female members of
the clergy also get to choose their religious name.

As to the first "truth" I would like point out that Jesus said in the
bible "And you shall be called Cephas (the rock), which means Peter."
The second is, as you snipped from the post, an unending battle between
those who believe Peter was a Pope and those who do not. I personally
haven't researched enough to say definitively one way or the other--I
was just pointing out that you were indeed stating a position and trying
so hard to remove yourself from doing so.
