Object: Why Didn't Libby & Rove Leak the Plame Story to Conservative News Media?
Libby and Rove spent days talking to no less than 6 journalists without
any of them taking the bait and publishing the story. The Bush
administration had any number of reporters in their back pocket who
worked for "eager to oblige" conservative news organizations to leak
the Plame story to. But Libby and Rove didn't go to any of their
"reliables," wanting instead for the story to come out in a particular
kind of news venue. Walter Pincus/Washington Post, Matt Cooper/Time,
Judith Miller/NYT, Tim Russert/NBC, Robert Novak/Chicago Sun Times/CNN,
Chris Matthews/MSNBC.
Libby and Rove could have leaked it to Brit Hume over at Fox, or Tony
Snow at Fox. Or Major Garrett. Or Chris Wallace. Or Rich Lowry, or
Jonah Goldberg, or Kate O'Beirne, or Podhoretz over at the National
Review. Or anybody at the Washington Times or the Weekly Standard.
Bill Kristol (a PNAC partner) or Tony Blankley. What about Hannity or
Limbaugh?
Libby, Rove, CHENEY, wanted the story to break in what's considered
MSM, and not by one of their own. They needed MSM to break it, and
fight for the first amendment protection. So it couldn't be traced
back to them. And because it would stall the proceedings, drag them
out.
Why does any legitimate journalist cooperate with this administration
at all anymore?

Excellent angle I hadn't considered. Make sure Kos gets a copy of this, and
notify Thompson at Capitol Hill Blue.

Yep, but he worked for an actual news outlet. He was the safety play
after the others failed.

Exactly. This was as calculated as any aspect of this crime, the
intention was to get the word out through news outlets that would not
appear to be (except for Novak) shills for the White House.

Why does any legitimate journalist cooperate with this administration

I wonder why journalists bother to attend the daily White House
briefings these days, except for the comic relief of seeing Scotty
squirm.
It would be great if they threw a press briefing and nobody came...

I suspect Novak would be safe having played
this sort of leak game at high stakes levels
in the press for many a decade. Leak it through say,
Limbaugh or lessor lights and you have no idea how
they would crumble when leaned on.

Why does any legitimate journalist cooperate with this
administration at all anymore?

After it became obvious that we were all had by Bush and crew
and that the press failed to persue the lies, the New York Times
admitted it failed to do an adequate job, and Miller, nowx fresh out
of jail was a big part of the failure at the New York Times.
Yet she stil works there? And there was no big reorganization
of how the New York Times handles these things.
Nor any sort of housecleaning of those who along
with Miller failed. Nor any organization of watchdog functions
to prevent a handfull of reporters and editors from making
massive errors like this again.
What we need in america is a press.
I note that New Republic sang its mea culps also after it
turned out there were no WMDs, no connection to OBL, but
again, no firings, no reorganization, no commitment to avoiding
being misled lik ethis again.
And these are just two of the news outlets that admitted
failure.
Some, Faux News, revel in right wing bias and incompetence,
the rest are silent and hope we don't notice.
Leaders of the pack, Washington Post, wall Street Journal
and others simply don't care.

There's no doubt there was a huge conspiracy, at the highest levels of
government. Now, all we can do is hope the judicial system does its job and
punishes those who are guilty. I'm not optimistic.

Why does any legitimate journalist cooperate with this administration
at all anymore?

They don't. There are very few legit journalists in the MSM.

And if the caper exploded in their face the conservative media would be left
intact and the MSM would be in a shambles.
Judith Miller was a plant at the NY Times (or she was turned).

Well, they did. What do you think Novak is?
