Mass. Anti-Gay Petition Supporter Arrested
by Margo Williams 365Gay.com Boston Bureau

(Boston, Massachusetts) Police have arrested a man, who was soliciting
names for a petition to ban gay marriage, outside a Pittsfield,
Massachusetts supermarket.
It is the latest in a series of complaints about the methods used by
Vote On Marriage - an umbrella group made up of the Catholic Church and
evangelical groups - who are trying to get a proposed amendment on the
2008 ballot.
The amendment, if approved, would prohibit same-sex marriage and prevent
the state from offering civil unions.
Pittsfield police say that the manager of a local Stop & Shop superstore
asked to have the man removed when he refused to go voluntarily. The
manager said that a number of shoppers complained about the man and the
aggressive manner in which he was trying to get them to sign.
Vote On Marriage needs to gather 65,825 signatures by Thanksgiving for
the measure to be considered.
The names would need to be verified by the Secretary of State. The
proposed amendment would then go to the legislature where it requires
the support of 50 members.
When police arrived at the store, the man who identified himself as Jay
Taylor of Lewiston, Maine, had set up a table in front of the store and
was pressing people "in an aggressive manner" to sign.
Police said that the man told them he was being paid to collect the
signatures but that he would not say who was paying him.
When Taylor refused a police order to leave the property he was arrested
and charged with criminal trespass.
Stop & Shop is the largest food store chain in New England. A company
spokesperson said that it does not take a stand on political issues.
She said that the store manager had received more than 40 complaints
from customers, "to the point where he couldn't run his store because he
was spending all of his time trying to settle concerns of customers."
Since Vote On Marriage began collecting names there has been a growing
number of people who have complained of illegal practices being used.
Some people have complained to authorities while others have contacted
newspapers throughout the state. Earlier this month a spokesperson for
Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly, said Reilly's office had received
about a dozen complaints. A special investigator has been assigned to
follow up on the complaints.
Shoppers at plazas and beer stores say that after signing a separate
petition to allow beer and wine sales in grocery stores, they were asked
to sign a second petition with little or no explanation. That second
petition was the gay-marriage measure.
Vote On Marriage hired a private company, Arno Political Consultants - a
firm with ties to Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger - to collect the
signatures.
The company has been involved in a number of conservative ballot
measures nationwide including the anti-gay marriage amendment in Ohio.
That measure passed by a wide margin last year. It has also worked for
the Republican National Committee to register GOP voters in Florida.
At the State House, the Joint Committee on Election Laws will hold a
special hearing on Oct. 18 to examine the complaints of fraud.

Inquiry Into Mass. Amendment 'Dirty Tricks'
by Steve LeBlanc, Associated Press

(Boston, Massachusetts) Supporters and opponents of an anti-gay marriage
ballot question designed to roll back the state's historic court ruling
allowing same-sex marriage are trading accusations of dirty tricks.
Opponents say signature gathers are using "bait and switch" tactics to
dupe voters into signing the question, while supporters say gay
activists are stealing blank petitions, defacing others to invalidate
signatures, and shoving and spitting on signature gatherers.
The dueling allegations were made at a crowded Statehouse hearing Tuesday.
The hearing included 10 voters, each of whom said signature gatherers
tried to trick them into signing the anti-gay marriage petition.
In each case, the voters said they were asked to sign a ballot question
about the sale of wine in grocery stores and were then told to sign a
second sheet of paper without being told it was the anti-gay marriage
amendment. In some cases they said told the second sheet was a "back up"
sheet for the wine question.
"She said 'could you sign the back up copy?' She completely made it
clear that it was for beer and wine," said Somerville resident Victoria
Ellis. "I was really disgusted by the tactic."
Angela McElroy, a Florida college student who worked as a paid signature
gatherer said her boss taught her how to deceive voters by arraigning
both petitions on her clip board so she could ask voters to sign twice,
but they would only see the language for the wine question.
"Mark trained me personally in bait and switch tactics...The fraud was
looked upon as a game," she said. "I felt horrible for lying to so many
people."
Mark Jacoby is a subcontractor working for California-based Arno
Political Consultants. Jacoby twice declined to comment.
Arno Political Consultants were hired by supporters of the ballot
question, which would define marriage as the union of a man and woman,
to help collect signatures. The company's president Michael Arno said
he'd never heard of the alleged bait-and-switch tactics. He said Jacoby
denied the allegations.

This is the same sort of stuff they tried to pull in my area some years ago
over the inclusion of sexual orientation in our anti-discrimination laws.
They even tried to pass off names of dead people as signatures. I wouldn't
want to give the "political consultants" in Massachusetts any ideas though.

<snip>
Sounds like the religious groups in Massachusetts are getting desperate to
get those signatures. They probably know that their amendment will be
dead in the water before it even gets a chance to be voted on, since the
number of people against gay marriage in Massachusetts is rapidly dropping.

Supporters of SSM in Mass. have started a web site on which they list
the names of all those who have signed the petition -
http://www.knowthyneighbor.org Guess who is screaming and ranting the
loudest about publishing this *publically available* information? Why
the religionists and homophobes would would prefer to stay in the closet
and not have their names listed on the net as the bigots they are!

Yeah, I heard about that. I think even without that website there
wouldn't be enough support for the amendment. If on the remote chance
that it does actually make it onto the ballot, I predict that it will go
down in a crushing defeat.
