Why is the Bible such a big deal? |
When the Old Testament was written, they were looking for a messiah.
The New Testament was created by anonymous Christians who invented a
tale to make it look as though a messiah appeared.
The only evidence of this supposed messiah is in the New Testament.
Christians believe in the divinity of the Bible, because they believe
that the tale is true.
Christians believe the tale is true, because they believe in the
divinity of the Bible.
Is it really this mindnumbingly simple? In other words, Christianity
rests entirely on the truth of the bible. The truth of the bible rests
entirely on whether or not it is "God-breathed." Whether it is
"God-breathed" is dependent on fulfillment of certain prophecies.
Anyone can invent a story to fulfill missing predictions in an older
text. Why are Christians so sure these inventions are "the truth"? Oh,
they were written by the apostles. But they weren't necessarily the
apostles - even if they were, the whole story of the apostles is IN THE
BIBLE, which leaves a gap of completely circular reasoning.
So what am I missing, that so many people believe in the good book;
even among atheists and theists, it is a hotly debated topic, spanning
threads of a thousand messages or more. Certain particularities are
disputed, hairs are split, passages are cited, re-cited; it seems a
great number of people "CARE" a great deal what is in this book,
believers or not. What I would like to know is, why - and if it can be
simply debunked as in the five sentences above, then isn't everything
else moot? (no offense intended here, just wondering)

In simple terms because our faith believes that the Bible is the word
of God. We are called to simply believe as a child that the Bible is
true and no manner of evidence you conjure up or invoke would deter our
faith.
I personally think that higher applications and education in the faith
HURTS the overall goal of believing in the Bible as a person of faith.
A simple faith may be better.

What a horrible confession you have just made! Your position is
totally lacking in both reason and integrity.
I personally think that higher applications and education in the faith
HURTS the overall goal of believing in the Bible as a person of faith.
A simple faith may be better.

That's why the Crap-lick Church has resorted to more forceful methods. (Not
that they're the only ones, just one of the most visible.)
Paul would not have been able to convince Gentiles to have faith in

When the Old Testament was written, they were looking for a messiah.
The New Testament was created by anonymous Christians who invented a

So what am I missing, that so many people believe in the good book;
even among atheists and theists, it is a hotly debated topic, spanning
threads of a thousand messages or more.

I believe in some kind of superior being or beings but the Bible
doesn't make sense to me; the middle ages English, the word structure,
the mean-spiritedness supposedly coming from God, and 2 plus 2 equals 5
stuff. For example, their descriptions of sin like it's something
tangible, like a disease rather something people do. And Jesus dying
supposedly "taking away our sins." If someone steals or murders,
nobody can take that away; it's done. And it doesn't make sense for
someone to be punished for what someone else does. The Bible and
Christian religion seems to be based on people being punished either
for things totally not their fault or for things done by others.
Whatever happened to just treating others the way one would like to be
treated and helping people?
