Muslims do it to animals:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4185337.stm
Judaists do it to their own sons:
(Genesis 22:9)
Hindus do it to coconuts
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4677320.stm
Get your minds out of the gutter - I'm talking about sacrifice.
"How does a temple in India make sure that it gets 15,000 coconuts a
day delivered for its rituals? It simply depends on the faith of its
thousands of Hindu devotees who run a unique voluntary courier service
to faithfully deliver the fruit every day without fail. This is the
thousands of coconuts, which can total more than 100,000 on festival
days - reach the famous Maa Tarini temple in the eastern Indian state
of Orissa every day."
Seriously, do gods *really* demand sacrifices of trivial items? Do
they really demand you kill something for them (and burn it?!)? It
seems that all of the major religions insist that this is true, but not
one of them asks if it makes any sense.
The god(s) purportedly created everything from nothing. If this were
true, then everything - literally everything in existence - belongs to
the god(s) - is part of the god(s) - is mundane to the god(s).
Does it make any sense at all that any of these gods would somehow be
pleased or placated or appeased or encouraged or induced by an
insignificant part of his creation pillaging and/or destroying another
insignificant part and presenting what the god already owns back to the
god?!
Doesn't it make more sense that a truly creative/creator god, assuming
it wasn't an evil god, would be far more impressed by creativity? Yet
nowhere in these stories do we read of *that* being rewarded. We don't
hear of kindness being an acceptable "sacrifice", or of creativity
placating a god, or of ingenuity or gentility being acceptable in
assuaging or inducing goodwill in a god.
Maybe that's why there is no god.
552.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4669104.stm
reveals that the chemistry of passion appears to last about two years.
Is this the best that eternity, infinite resources and a divine mind
can come up with?
Or is there quite simply no god?
553.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4674446.stm
"Facial tumours that have killed thousands of Tasmanian devils could be
spread by the animals biting each other during squabbles over
carcasses."
Is this the best that eternity, infinite resources and a divine mind
can come up with?
Or is there quite simply no god?
554.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4674276.stm
"Rats can home in on smells using a method similar to the stereo
processing of sounds, scientists say."
Rats can smell in stereo! Humans cannot. Why is this? Why would a
god create "lower" organisms with greater skills than the purported
pinnacle of his creation? Is this the best that eternity, infinite
resources and a divine mind can come up with?
Or is there quite simply no god?
555.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4661366.stm
reveals that one gene makes earwax wet or dry!
What was a god doing when he came up with earwax in the first place?
Is this the best that eternity, infinite resources and a divine mind
can come up with?
Or is there quite simply no god?
556.
They desperately needed a miracle to beatify (let's face it, he was
wa-ay beyond beautification) the late Karol Wojtyla, ex-Pope, so
Slawomir Oder, postulator (or is it fabricator?) of the cause,
announced in late January that he had desperately grasped at the straw
of "miraculous healing" of a nun, who claimed that after praying to the
old Pope's dead body, she was healed of Parkinson's disease:
http://www.the-tidings.com/2006/0203/miracle.htm
Oder has said that he was moved "...to think that this was the same
illness that destroyed the Holy Father and it also kept this poor nun
from carrying out her work...To me, this is another sign of God's
creativity,"
Uh-uh. Yeah. Right. Sure. I'll buy that. Another sign of this fake
god's creativity? What are these miserable imbeciles actually *using*
for brains these days?
Or is it simply nothing more than the fact that there is no god?
557.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4708086.stm
"A University of Bristol team has discovered brain cells that generate
nervous impulses essential for gasping, but not normal breathing. They
believe a deficiency in these cells could explain some cases of
unexplained baby deaths."
So the creator God screwed up again! Or is it simply nothing more than
the fact that there is no god?
558.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4689108.stm
"A new potato with fewer than half the calories of other spuds has been
developed after nine years of research and breeding, according to
scientists."
The designer god couldn't do this? That couldn't simply be for no
other reason than that there is no god, could it?
559.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4688450.stm
"Unhealthy lifestyles and unstable family environments may be
contributing to a fall in the age that girls reach puberty, research
suggests."
So the worse off a girl is, the more likely she is to get pregnant?
And this was designed by a god?
Uh-huh. Yeah. Right.
560.
"Look at the birds above: they don't sow or reap, nor do they gather
crops into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Apparently not:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4686136.stm
That's because there is no god.
561.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4696434.stm
reveals the self-cleaning bathroom. Of course, none of this would have
been necessary if there were a god, because he wouldn't have created
harmful bacteria.
562.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4709260.stm
Did a loving god really create "gullet cancer" to kill 7,000p.a.? Or
is there no god?
563.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4713714.stm
Babies do math at seven months, the same as Rhesus monkeys: But they
can't tell you where and how they're hurting so you or the doctor can
help them.
Did a designer really create this? Or is there no god?
564.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4715860.stm
"Catholic group Opus Dei wants "references that hurt Catholics" to be
removed from the film version of Dan Brown's hit novel The Da Vinci
Code. "The Da Vinci Code offers a deformed image of the Catholic
Church," Opus Dei said in a statement released in Rome. But the group
added it would not call for a boycott of the highly anticipated film,
due out in May. The book portrays Opus Dei as a power-hungry movement
bent on covering up the truth about Christ's bloodline."
They ought to rename themselves "Hopeless Deity". Here's a group
dedicated to the work of god, so they claim, yet they spend millions on
buildings to house their organization - something their mythical Jesus
would have frowned upon according to scripture (and had he actually
existed).
How pathetic. How predictable. How religious.
Obviously not one of them really believes there's a god or they'd be
praying for a solution to their problem instead of impotently lodging
complaints.
565.
Did a god really want people to die over a bunch of cartoons:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4715084.stm
Or is there no god who cares?
566.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4723150.stm
Tyrannosaurus rex apparently had razor sharp senses.
Tiger droppings scare goats:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/02/17/tiger.poo.reut/index.html
"Goats wouldn't have seen a tiger from an evolutionary point of view
for at least 15 generations but they recognize the smell of the
predator,"
So let's get this straight. T. Rex has the senses of a smaller, faster
predator, but apparently was a scavenger, whereas goats who have never
known a tiger get scared shitless by tiger-*****.
Why would a god create something like this?
Or is it simply that no god created *****?
567.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4716208.stm
Risk-takers escape Parkinson's! Why is that? Is that an example of a
god's design? Did a creator design us so that those who are sheep and
do precisely what the god insists we do will lose their minds, while
the ones who take risks and go against god's teachings will thrive?
Is this really how a god plans life for us? Or is it too idiotic to
even contemplate there being a god?
568.
Madinna has an operation for a hernia, and reveals how poorly designed
we are:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4719352.stm
"'The abdominal wall is nature's corset. It is tough stuff, but full
of natural weaknesses like the perforation in a postage stamp," he
said. "When you get a hernia one of these windows opens a little too
wide and the corset effect is lost. The intestines come through and
force their way through the wall." '
This was a design? This was the work of a perfect creator who had all
eternity to work in and infinite resources upon which to call?
How about "No"?
569.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4723158.stm
"Placing children in long-term care is in itself "an act of abuse",
according to a leading professor of paediatrics. Speaking at a science
conference in St Louis, US, Professor Dana Johnson said that even a
week in an institution could be detrimental. The University of
Minnesota scientist said that children placed in these facilities could
suffer serious physical and emotional health problems. The findings
come from an ongoing study of children conducted in Romania."
Is there really a creator, a designer, who makes children so vulnerable
and then allows circumstances to attack those vulnerabilities?
No.
570.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4720334.stm
"Sally Clark: Served three years after being wrongly convicted of
killing her two sons. Angela Cannings: Served 18 months after being
wrongly convicted of killing her two sons. Donna Anthony: Served six
years after being wrongly convicted of killing her son and daughter
Trupti Patel: Acquitted of killing three of her children"
Is there really a creator who kills children and then let's their own
mother go to jail for it?
No.
571.
Headaches are one of the top ten reasons people go to see their doctor,
and account for 20% of time missed form work. And women seem to suffer
more than men:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4716776.stm
Did a creator really design this?
No.
572.
Did a god really allow 900 - 1800 people to suffocate horribly under
mud?
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/02/18/philippines.landslide/index.html
Or is there no god?
573.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WEATHER/02/18/winter.storms.sat.ap/index.html
God kills four with winter storm.
Or was it just a natural thing and no god had anything to do with it?
574.
Boys face twice the risk of burns:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4723934.stm
Why? Would would a god design a male as the pinnacle of his creation,
and then make him weaker than the female he created as a toy for the
male?!
575.
Hunger pangs trigger memory?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4723162.stm
I can see how, with evolution, this would come to be, but why would a
god *design* this into the pinnacle of creation? Wouldn't it be more
intelligent for a creator to design the memory to improve *before* the
hunger pangs strike?
576.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/02/21/coma.death/index.html
"Less than a year after awaking from a decade-long coma, a
brain-injured firefighter from Buffalo, New York, has died, fire
officials told CNN. Don Herbert, 44, died of pneumonia early Tuesday
morning. "
Now where was a god's divine design in this? Ten *years* in a coma.
They change his meds, he wakes up and has 10 months before he dies.
Where was the plan here? What was achieved? How did this kit out
8anyone* better for Heaven?
Or is there simply no god and anyone who tries to find any kind of fit
between religion and sense is wasting their time?
577.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4736196.stm
"Elephant seals on South Georgia have been recruited to the cause of
science. Equipped with computerised tags stuck to their heads, the
animals have been collecting remarkable new information on conditions
in the Southern Ocean. As the animals swim for thousands of km and
dive down to 2,000m, their tags record details of temperature, depth
and the salinity of the water. "
"Dive down to 2,000 meters". That's ~6,562 feet - well over a mile.
Why can elephant seals do this and god's pinnacle of creation -
humanity, not?
Or is it that there is no design, no creator, just evolution?
578.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4738698.stm
"A bottle-green Australian frog may hold the key to future mosquito
repellents, a study says. A University of Adelaide team found the
secretions of the dumpy tree frog are effective at warding off
mosquitoes."
So the frog can repel them but some creator god didn't see fit to
provide the pinnacle of his creation with a similar ability?
Or is it just evolution with no god in sight?
579.
http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2006/02/sensitivity_charm_and_cleverne.php
Did a god really design nature to give us erroneous ideas about sexual
etiquette?
Or is there no god?
580.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/02/26/church.shooting.ap/index.html
"A suspected gunman who opened fire with a shotgun during a church
service Sunday morning killed a woman and wounded two people before he
shot himself a mile away, police said. Investigators believe a
domestic dispute led to the shooting at Zion Hope Missionary Baptist
Church about 11 a.m., said Second Deputy Police Chief James Tate. A
9-year-old child, sitting near the unidentified woman who died, was hit
in the hand by a buckshot pellet, Tate said. Police didn't know the
relationship of the pair. As the gunman fled the church, he critically
shot a man trying to protect his wife from a carjacking attempt,
officials said."
Where was god? Nowhere.
581.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/02/24/child.groom.ap/index.html
"A 37-year-old woman who married her son's 15-year-old friend pleaded
not guilty Friday to charges of statutory rape, child molestation and
enticing a minor. Before the hearing, the boy's grandmother, Judy
Hayles, said he would seek a divorce. Lisa Lynnette Clark was arrested
in November. A few days earlier, she married the boy under a 1962 law
that set the marrying age in Georgia at 16 but made an exception in the
case of pregnancy. She gave birth to a baby boy earlier this month."
Now what's wrong with this? Surely a god would never have made people
capable of having children at 11, 12 or 13 unless he dearly wanted us
to, would he?
Or is it that there is no god and humans are still struggling to catch
up with evolution?
And now for something a little different!
Marilyn Adamson, at:
http://everystudent.com/features/isthere.html
lists the following reasons why there's a god:
582.
Throughout history, in all cultures of the world, people have been
convinced there is a God. Yep - they've been convinced about a lot fo
things, but fear and ignorance are what this proves, not that there is
a god. Indeed, this "evidence" refutes the existence of a god because
every culture has a different god.
583.
"The complexity of our planet points to a deliberate Designer who not
only created our universe, but sustains it today.
Many examples showing God's design could be given, possibly with no
end. But here are a few:
The Earth...its size is perfect."
By what criteria? The Earth could be larger or smaller and still fit
us. The fact is that the evidence shows that we evolved to fit the
planet, not that we were created 6,000 years ago and a planet made to
fit us.
Besides, the planet isn't perfect for us. There's too little land and
too little of that to sustain us comfortably. If we had been created
as aquatic creatures, the planet would be a better fit.
584.
"The Earth is located the right distance from the sun."
That's a tough one to argue given that parts of it are too cold to
sustain comfortable human existence and other parts are too hot. We're
too close to the sun - which is why so many people get radiation burns
and skin cancer. Is this the best a god can do - build a flaming ball
of deadly radiation and put us the "right distance" from it? No - a
real god would have done much better.
585.
"And our moon is the perfect size and distance from the Earth for its
gravitational pull."
For what purpose? Because much of life is in some way tied to the tide
doesn't mean no life could exist without the Moon. Besides, the moon
was much closer in the past - was it also the right distance then?
586.
"Water...colorless, odorless and without taste, and yet no living thing
can survive without it."
I wonder if Marilyn Adamson lifted her water properties from here:
http://www.oceansonline.com/water_props.htm
But is she claiming her god couldn't create beings which required no
water? That would have saved a lot of lives. And there are other
fluids that could theoretically support life.
587.
"Water has an unusually high boiling point and freezing point. Water
allows us to live in an environment of fluctuating temperature changes,
while keeping our bodies a steady 98.6 degrees."
Why would an omnipotent god have to design it this way given that he
purportedly designed everything just for us? The fact is that we are
not "designed" to survive at boiling point or freezing point. Any god
worth his title ought to have been able to design us with a much wider
tolerance than the narrow one we have.
588.
"Water is a universal solvent. This property of water means that
thousands of chemicals, minerals and nutrients can be carried
throughout our bodies and into the smallest blood vessels."
Why? Why would a god need to design us this way when he could do
anything? The fact that he purportedly did design this imposes severe
limitations on us. Besides, money is the universal solvent, not water,
and humans invented that.
589.
"Water is also chemically inert."
This is evidence of a god?
590.
"Water has a unique surface tension."
Water has a high surface tension but it isn't unique. And so what?
591.
"Water freezes from the top down and floats, so fish can live in the
winter."
But the Titanic sinks.
Obviously Marilyn Adamson fails to grasp just how pathetic she sounds.
She's claiming that since water freezes top down, this allows fish to
survive, but it works equally well the opposite way: if water froze
bottom up, fish could still live in the upper part that wasn't frozen.
However, if the entire body of water freezes, the fish still die,
regardless of which part freezes first.
There's at least one species of frog that can survive a winter being
frozen. Any god which could design this could design fish the same
way. Why didn't he? And why claim water is wonderful because it
allows fish to survive in winter? Any god worth his name could easily
have designed a planet with no winter - or designed a warmer winter.
592.
"Ninety-seven percent of the Earth's water is in the oceans. But on
our Earth, there is a system designed which removes salt from the water
and then distributes that water throughout the globe."
This is, of course, a lie. Many parts of the Earth are parched.
People and animals die because of it. A fifth of the world's
population does not have decent water to drink even where there is
water. We cannot drink direct from the ocean without getting sick.
This was *designed*? No!
But the bottom line is that our kind of life could not have evolved
without water, so it's hardly surprising that water is so "kind" to
this life and so necessary for it. It does not mean there's a god.
593.
When NASA launches a shuttle mission, it is assumed a monkey didn't
write the plan, but intelligent and knowledgeable minds.
Yep. So what? this is supposed to prove that a god
594.
"Imagine looking at Mount Rushmore, in which the likenesses of
Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt are carved. Could
you ever believe that it came about by chance?"
Could this:
http://www.thestudiony.com/blog/may03/050303.html
There is one out there which has the profile of President Kennedy, but
I couldn't find an image online.
Can you believe this arch came about by chance:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4790238.stm
Or did some god design it?
Did some god design the panda's "thumb"?
595.
"The distinguished astronomer Sir Frederick Hoyle showed how amino
acids randomly coming together in a human cell is mathematically
absurd."
It is if you assininely assume that chemicals react randomly and
nothing is conserved. But of course this isn't the case. Chemical
reactions follow the laws of physics, not the laws of chance.
But Fred Hoyle thought the universe wasn't expanding and that life came
to Earth from space - which means that it evolved elsewhere! So he did
accept evolution even while he denied it. You want to call *him* to
your aid?
596.
Humankind's inherent sense of right and wrong cannot be biologically
explained.
Yes it has.
597.
God not only has revealed Himself in what can be observed in nature,
and in human life, but He has even more specifically shown Himself in
the Bible. God's thoughts, personality, and attitudes can only be
known if God chooses to reveal them."
And your proof for this blind-***** assertion is? Nowhere, as usual.
It's nothing but another unsupported Christian claim.
598.
"Archaeological findings continue to confirm rather than refute the
accuracy of the Bible. For example, an archeological find in northern
Israel in August 1993 confirmed the existence of King David, author of
many of the Psalms in the Bible."
Another lie! The truth is that a piece of stone was dug up near the
ruins of the city of Dan. The stone mentioned the House of David. It
isn't proof of anything. The real mystery is why there is such an
immense paucity of evidence for a character who, the Bible claims, was
a huge and important historical figure. Why does the Bible demand so
much faith? Is it because there is no god?
599.
"Throughout the entire Bible the same message appears:
A. God created the world we live in, and created us specifically to
have a relationship with Him.
B. He deeply loves us.
C. We have sinned and are under God's judgment, in need of His
forgiveness.
D. God provided a way for our sins to be forgiven.
E. He asks us to receive His forgiveness and have a relationship with
Him that will last eternally."
How is this any kind of evidence for a god? What this is proof of is
human fear, desperation, inadequacy, ignorance, and gullibility.
600.
Unlike any other revelation of God, Jesus Christ is the clearest, most
specific picture of God.
Lie. There is zero useful evidence outside of scripture that there
ever was a Jesus Christ, miracle-working son of some god.
But I'll change my mind of anyone anywhere, any time can offer valid
useful scientific evidence of such an existence. Without that it's a
myth at best and an evil lie at worst.
