Object: Why There's No Design #165 - Junk DNA and Complexity
Genomicron:
http://tinyurl.com/ywfmz6
takes Science News to task over an article which appears to claim that
so-called "junk" DNA is what makes for complexity in living organisms
and is therefore not junk at all.
Genomicron points out (with a very effective counter-chart to the one
in the Science News article) that there's no connection between the
amount of "junk" DNA and the segment of organisms which possesses it..
Humans fall right in the middle of the mammalian range of genome size,
and the range is larger in many other groups.
Clearly there is absolutely no pattern whatsoever to this "design",
which begs the question "From whence the impetus to claim design int
eh first place?"
In passing, Genomicron mentions that the pufferfish has 400Mb of
genome whilst the mosquito has 1,400Mb. What, exactly, is it about
the design of the "lowly" mosquito which requires that it has over
three times the genetic material that the "more advanced" puffer fish
evidently requires?

I love the idea of using computer terms to count the number of DNA base
pairs. That a dead skin cell in one speck of dust on my coffee table has
something like the same data storage capacity as a CD-ROM.
Although DNA is 4 bits to a byte and CD-ROMs use I dunno 8 or maybe 16?

I wonder what kind of a creature you'd get if you rendered Win XP or
Vista as a chunk of DNA code and introduced it into an unsuspecting
egg. ... Probably best not to think about,...

It's what we used to call a bug fix. Unfortunately, with Microsoft,
every bug fix seems to introduce more bugs than it fixes. What else
do you know of that has a day of the week set for bug fix releases -

As one can see from tables like:

Genome sizes are all over the map. According to the table, the puffer
fish has less non-coding ("junk") DNA than other species. If anything
tables like this only reinforce the random nature of and lack of design
in evolution of the genome.
